It's the last time the tournament will be this close to home until 2030 at the earliest. There are plenty of cheap enough ways to St Petersburg, with trains from Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki.
Highly reccomend it if ya can. Spent a month at WC06 as a neutral and had a savage time

Dunno. I don't see the buzz if your team isn't playing.

Thats a good point.

I looks like America will get 2026 and I'd be keen to go to that but that seems a Looooooong time away!

100% not going to Qatar. Unless we qualify!

Managed by Martinez?  No chance

Dembele, Alderweireld, De Bruyne, Mertens, Hazard, Courtois, Vertonghen, Kompany, Witsel

No reason why Belgium can't win this years world cup if most of those players hit form.
The Portuguese manager who won the Euros 2 years ago hadn't exactly a super track record.

Whatever can be said about Martinez, he is a manager of a way higher standard than Wilmots. Not saying much I know, but having a manager who at the very least can be seen to be competent, is a really good starting point for Belgium considering their few years under Wilmots.

Belgium really do have some amazing players and I think they are much better placed this time around than in the previous 2 tournaments. A lot of their players have matured and look ready for big things. The World Cup is a long way off though, 4 months is a life time in football. Injuries, burn out, loss of form, a lot can happen. I really hope they do themselves justice this time as they 2 many quality players not to!
"I called him an embarrassment to FIFA and to himself," .... He said 'No-one speaks to me like that'.... and I said, "well I do' and that was that."

I suppose Lukaku should have got a mention given his goalscoring record at international level.

Belgium are like the Spain of the 1990s. Will always f**k up as soon as they get to the tournament despite having a great squad of players

I read somewhere that one of the things which recommended Martinez to the Belgian FA was that he's not Belgian!

That is, a major reason behind their underperformance is a split between their Flemish and Walloon players.

Which could a be a load of rubbish, but you do hear similar eg Spain never thrived for decades until Aragones sorted out their regional rivalries; France long had a problem with racial tensions (the Dutch, too, I believe); England's 'Golden Generation' never delivered because of Man U vs Liverpool rivalry etc

Anyhow, whilst Martinez may be better than Wilmots, I'm not sure that as a manager, he's at the same level as the players are at theirs.

There is talk of a gap between the players based on linguistic differences, similar was said of Spain at the time, not to mention the talk of racial divides in the Dutch dressing rooms down the years.
I suppose if they do well the talk will be of uniting a dividing nation, a la France '98, if they don't more will be made of that divide.
I will say this, they have a cracking shirt!

Sorry Terri, didn't see your post which I just repeated!

Thinking about it, I think I read somewhere that the great Czechoslovakian team which became European Champions in 1976 was actually made up of 10 Slovaks and just one Czech*. Of course that may be a reflection of the relative strengths of the clubs in the two regions at the time, but it might also have promoted greater cohesion between the players, too?

In fact off the top of my head, I can only think of one national team which has managed to forge a tremendous unity of purpose, even despite "differences" in the squad which might otherwise have been expected to cause division Wink

* - Ironically the present Czech Republic team has been recognised by FIFA/UEFA as the successor to the old Czechoslovakia team,

I don't think it was as many as 10, I have 8 in my head, but the point remains, no matter the actual number. I know Panenka, who famously sealed the win, was from Prague and played for Slavia.

Yeah, you're right, it was eight Slovaks:

Which would be a bit like Oireland winning the Rugby World Cup with 14 Irishmen and Rory Best - except that "qualifying for the Finals" always seems to be the height of things, before bottling it when they do get there LOL

Even Steve Staunton is a higher calibre of Wilmots though. They replaced a spoofer with a spoofer, but his spoof level is yet to be determined.

Either way they missed a glorious chance to recruit a Manager which would of taken them to genuine WC challengers.

Martinez fairly hit the jackpot in getting that job.

I like the Belgian players and wouldn't mind if they won the world cup but I cannot hack that moaning git Martinez due to his carry on with our players.
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.
