There is a joint statement from Bojo, Merkel and Macron urging de-escalation.

The Iranians know that taking on the Americans in any full frontal confrontation is the end of them Russian help or not. The Yanks armoury is staggering. By far the best armed with 6,000 tanks, 40,000 armoured vehicles, 12,000 aircraft, 20 aircraft carriers. 85 Destroyers. Supreme firepower. They are bullies but by the same token the Iranians and Suleimani have been pushing them hard and maybe in the end there was one push too far.

And they also know that there is no way the US will invade Iran like it did to Iraq. Not withstanding the geographical differences (Iraq consisting of vast areas of desert and Iran consisting of rugged mountainous areas), Irans military defenses are completely different to Iraqs. Their defensive system is a lot more modern and extensive (They have S300s) and their ballistic missiles like the Shahab 3 are capable of reaching anywhere in the Middle East and parts of Europe. Notwithstanding that, they also have the ability to call upon the likes of the Houthis and Hezbollah to attack US military targets across the Middle East. Iran also doesn't need destroyers or aircraft carriers to disrupt shipping and military targets in the Strait of Hormuz

Exactly. It will be asymmetrical warfare as it has been for the past 10 years. The real aim seems to be influence and power in Iraq for the Iranians. The death of Suleimani will hurt those ambitions. He was the strategist. He was the brains. It will also spook the Iranians. How did the Americans know his movements? It must have come from an informant or agent. And a very high ranking one at that either within the Iranian Government itself or one of the militias.

In all seriousness does anyone think the Americans could steam roll Iran like they did Iraq? 82M population vs 25M when they invaded Iraq. Their army is much more powerful and they've alies in China and Russia. Now like Ukraine and Georgia when the Americans didn't directly step in to stop the Russians I don't think they or China would step in to stop the Americans but still.

Obviously a well co-ordinated response by Iran with the Americans probably informed via a third party that the attacks were coming. Purely for a domestic audience this. There are two ways of looking at it:
1) The Iranians are fearful of a war with the Americans. Miscalculations or reckless actions could see an escalation diffficult to control. Trump himself is wholly unpredictable and not the kind of leader you want to prod to much. It will be back to assymetrical warfare now 2) This is a feint. The Iranians are making it look like this is it but in reality want a confrontation with America in the region so they can try to gain control in Iraq and shore up support. I think we all know its number one.

Unfortunately Europe will probably be the target. American terrorists have their home market on lock down.

Yup - it's definitely number one on the basis of the official responses to date from both parties: Iran: Iranian officials said Tehran did not want a war and its strikes “concluded” its response to Friday’s killing of Suleimani. US: In a sign that Trump could refrain from a major retaliatory response, the US president tweeted late on Tuesday night: “All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good!,” he wrote. |

Apparently no casualties.
This actually opens up the possibility of de-escalation. But who’d trust the current US Administration?

I was going to renew my sky package and watch it unfold, the buggers said last night that it would be pay for view, delighted now it was just a little scheduled joust and not the real thing.

Sorry, a news channel said that a news story was going to be pay per view? Am I reading that correctly or are you taking the piss and I should take myself off to the thick thread? |

The latest David McWilliams podcast is worth a listen. Speaks about the differences in the geographical location of Iran being the complete opposite of Iran, making ground assaults more difficult, along with Iran's population being over double the size of Iraqs.
Not to mention the possible militias that can be recruited in neighbouring countries.
