He played almost every single minute for Reading last year and you think he wont get regular football at Sheffield Wednesday? He'll be a regular starter. Do people just not pay attention or what? |
Yeah I edited it above as chances are he will get them. You would hope he does! |

Weirdest thing i was tipping round the arcade in Newcastle co down bout 2 weeks ago the day this thread was bumped, youngest loves the tipping point penny machines, was wearing an old ireland shirt. Passed a guy pushing a pram absolute double of jazzy jeff i mean doppelganger sh*te. Was a weird brief stand off, he looked at me like i was going to start chatting i kind of stopped looked at him went nah and walked off. Anyway other than being his absolute double he had a tattoo of an anchor above his hand seen jeff signing a new contract online and low and behold he has a tattoo on the a exact same spot,. So was jazzy jeff hanging about a scummy arcade in Newcastle, i suppose perfect foil

They were trying to sign both Hendrick and Hayden from Newcastle. Either or both would strengthen the team, they already have Barry Bannan in midfield so it would give them more clout. They are a big team, one of the sleeping giants, but it’s a long season in a very hard league so they need to bring in some experienced players.

Hendrick the dribbler? On the rare occasions the ball manages to reach him he gets rid of it in a millisecond as if its a fragmentation grenade! Maradona he is not. He does nothing, continuously and relentlessly match after match. You might notice him one game in seven when he sparks to life a bit just as he is about to get finally dropped then reverts back to total anonymity again. Has been murdering a living for the last 7 years.

Nobody is crying - just curious.
I've seen it before on other sites whereby people deliberately misspell a persons name.

He's not a tackler really, he's not someone that's going to dig in and protect the centre backs.
He's a capable passer, can thread a nice through ball, but doesn't seem to do it very often. He's not really much of a crosser of a ball I don't think.
I'm sure I remember him having a decent long range shot in him back in the day, but we rarely see it these days. Most midfielders are told not to shoot much from range now anyway. He doesn't really do set pieces.
At Burnley he was good at winning second balls and giving them to other players to recycle the play. This suited a Sean Dyche team who weren't overly focused on keeping hold of the ball compared to other teams in the league.
He is by all accounts a model professional, he keeps himself in good shape and is rarely injured.
Overall he's the kind of player that can pad out a squad, won't do anything much wrong, won't look especially out of place, but probably won't do much of note either. He remains in the squad because we currently only have at most five or maybe six midfielders who are better than him and one of them is also covering right wing back at the moment. |
And I think its only fair to point out that objectively our other midfield players also offer only a limited amount. Indeed it would be quite easy to do a similar critique on several of them. SO objectively, what he offers is pretty close to what most of the rest of them offer, he's just a bit older. |
I would say with Cullen, Molumby, Knight and Smallbone you could pick out specific things in their game that they do particularly well in a way that's hard to do with Jeff, because not much stands out about him beyond his application, fitness and resistance to injury. Similarly McGrath offers a set piece threat at a minimum. Browne is more of an all rounder like Jeff, but Browne probably offers more of a goal threat and can also - at a stretch - cover the right side of defence. However this squad shows that there is room for seven central midfielders, and on that basis Hendrick is still in on merit, but as the seventh of the seven for me.
Either way, you have to give him credit him for how much he has extracted from the game financially. He will have been on reasonable Premier League money at Burnley, even before he got the bumper contract from Newcastle. He will probably make more money between now and Christmas than Jamie McGrath has earned in his whole career. And yet, when we're bringing on a sub midfielder against France or Holland, I'd rather see McGrath warming up to come on than Hendrick. That's not meant as a criticism of Jeff necessarily, he has maximised his income from the game.
|
Hendricks a better dribbler of the ball than any of the aforementioned for a start, he's probably (or at least was) more likely to come up with a game winning contribution.

We're decent enough..

Each to their own, I'd have him 5th of the 7, and probably 2nd as the deepest lying midfielder (thats whats keeping him in the squad imo)
