Torres : " It's a big step forward in my career. I'm glad to be joining a big club."
Doesn't say much about the club he left, does it ? |

Congratulations to Paul Konchesky who has joined a club that have won European Cups. Unlike Fernando Torres, who hasn't

Jaysus Gav u really are a bitter old moany kant like the rest of Pool fans, pathetic bunch of muppets the lot of yis! Torres wants to win things and Pool couldnt win a raffle at the moment so I dont see the problem, they got a good price for him and spent a lot of it wisely on Carroll |

The Torres move was best for all concerned. 50mil for a injury prone player who has spent more time sulking than scoring goals.
In return we get 2 *potentially* excellent players.
Should be an interesting few months now.

Replicate transfer deadline day in your work/ college canteen by panic-buying a pot noodle for 20 euro, a minute before they close...

Tuesday 01 February 2011 Telegraph.co.uk Why an inflated transfer fee is no guarantee of Premier League success As Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres come to terms with being Britain's new record transfers, Telegraph Sport examines the league's five other biggest deals - not all of which ended happily. Flops: Robinho and Juan Sebastian Veron both struggled to live up to inflated transfer fees Photo: EPA / REUTERSBy Telegraph staff 8:08PM GMT 01 Feb 2011 Robinho Real Madrid to Manchester City, £32.5million (Sep 2008) The Brazilian was at the centre of one of English football's most frantic transfer deadline days, when Manchester City's newly-acquired petro-dollars funded his arrival from Real Madrid. The experience was not a happy one for all concerned, with Robinho scoring just 16 goals in 53 games and cutting a morose figure by the end of his stay. He was loaned to Santos in Jan 2010 before being sold to AC Milan last summer. Andrei Shevchenko AC Milan to Chelsea, £31million (May 2006) The deal that deterred Roman Abramovich from marquee signings - until this month, at least. The Ukrainian was a stellar striker in his pomp, but was already closing on 30 by the time he signed on at Stamford Bridge and never threatened to repeat the devastating displays of his Dynamo Kiev or Milan heyday. He lasted three mostly miserable years before being loaned to Milan and then, finally, released to Dynamo in Aug 2009. Dimitar Berbatov Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United, £30.75million (Sep 2008) Related Articles Transfer webchat with Duncan White 01 Feb 2011 January transfer window in numbers 01 Feb 2011 Premier League: 'no alternative' to window 01 Feb 2011 Transfers top £134m on manic Monday 01 Feb 2011 This is austerity Britain - Premier League style 01 Feb 2011 British record transfer fees 28 Jan 2011 The Bulgarian was the other player at the centre of the transfer maelstrom two-and-a-half years ago, having been whisked into United's Carrington training ground under a blanket - allegedly on the orders of Sir Alex Ferguson, who feared a rival offer from Manchester City. At first, it appeared City were lucky to have missed out. Berbatov struggled for consistency and was largely eclipsed by Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in his first two seasons. This term, however, he has been United's stand-out performer, scoring 20 goals in his first 26 games. Rio Ferdinand Leeds United to Manchester United, £30million (July 2002) The England captain is still the world's most expensive defender and, after a nervy start, has certainly justified the eye-watering outlay, helping his club win four Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League. His relationship with his employers has not been without its hiccups, however. He failed to attend a drugs test in 2003 after going shopping in Manchester, leading to an eight-month ban from the Football Association, and was involved in a precarious stand-off with the club over a new contract in 2005. Fans booed him until he eventually signed a £100,000-a-week deal. Juan Sebastian Veron Lazio to Manchester United, £28.1million (July 2001) Nobody enjoyed Veron's spell at Old Trafford: not the player, not the supporters and certainly not the club's accountants, who saw a vast expenditure rewarded with decidedly mediocre performances. Only one man stood by the Argentine throughout the ordeal: Sir Alex Ferguson, who famously rounded on his midfielder's critics in the media. "People are always going on about ******* Veron. You tell me, what's wrong with Veron?" he ranted. |
