Hes less than useless defensively, just saunters around never trying a leg to get back into position and defend in any capacity.

I do not and never will get the love in for him, not as a defensive player at LB or LWB.

Who's been referring to him as a defensive player?

He's a creative midfielder being played at LWB/LB. Indeed, he was the most creative player in the Championship last season (108 key passes in 43 games). 

He minds the ball and uses it well, he's good at winning fouls (2nd most fouled player last season, Ogbene was 3rd) which can help take pressure off a team under the cosh.

Yes, he's defensively weak, and lacks pace. Something that will definitely get more exposed in a back 4.
But if you can find ways to mitigate those risks then he's a very handy player to have.

He definitely has issues, see thread hereunder re his start at the Saints - a lot of criticism
