A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article for The LOI Blog that got a decent bit of attention both positive and negative. Was wondering what you guys thought.

Interesting and kudos for getting off your arse and trying for change.

However, if punters aren't interested in Bohs v Pats, will Bohs v Mervue have them flocking? No relegation there either which I think is a recipe for mediocrity.

Absolutely fantastic. I love this idea.

The only thing I would slightly tinker with is to avoid the regional divisions and replace it will a seeding system.

I would make it regional for the first season but for future seasons I would make the 2 leagues to be drawn at the start of the season. How you finished in the league will define where you are seeded.

Just say we had Conference 1 and Conference 2. If your team finished 5th in Conference 1 in Season 1, then you will be seeded 5th to be drawn into Conference 1 or Conference 2 the next season.

So for example if the leagues in season 1 ended up like

Conference 1
1. Pats
2. Bohs
3. Shamrock
4. Drogs
5. UCD
etc

Conference 2
1. Sligo
2. Limerick
3. Cork
4. Waterford
5. Cobh
etc

Then for Season 2 the league will be drawn as

Conference 1
1. Pats or Sligo
2. Bohs or Limerick
3. Shamrock or Cork

Conference 2
1. Pats or Sligo
2. Bohs or Limerick
3. Shamrock or Cork

I feel that in that way that every game right up to the last day of the season will mean something for every team. Even if you end up winning the tournament, you will still be seeded as you finished. This will help keep the integrity of the league when the top teams are qualified for the play offs.

I think if we regionalize it, it could get lob-sided in regard to quality.

Overall I think it is a brilliant idea. The league as it is, is extremely dull and lacks consistent big games. Slow drawn out leagues are not viewer or fan friendly.

Play offs

A 3 year average system for relegation.

No, it's terrible. I like going to Pats and Derry not Bray and UCD.

These are two very contradictory statements. Thanks for the kind words lads. Like the idea of the seeding only issue would be increased cost for travel expenses, great idea though. At some point we have to accept that Irish people just dont like leagues, blame it on the GAA or whatever you want but its just a fact.

Sorry, I think it's an awful idea. Wild cards, playoffs, Conferences & No Relegation, Stinks of the American sports' system Dead, Might as well bring back Sporting Franchise while we're at it.

NFL system, in my opinion, is excellent, exciting, and I wish the GAA would adopt similar. The system has nothing to do with franchises. Bizarre comment

Agreed.

So how will changing the league format alter this?

As an old school Rovers fan I know says, you could be handing out free rides at the LoI and most of the 'best fans in the world' (tm) still would have no interest.

I think people simply need to realise that while there are obvious flaws and grounds for improvement, the LoI is a good standard for a country of our size, the best supported league on the island and this is as good as it gets.

It is still a very long league structure alright. Are you banking on the playoff series attracting bigger crowds because of the nature of knockout?
