Had this idea that I might start posting player ratings of Irish/Irish eligible players playing in the English leagues as issued by journos watching the various games to give a better idea of how our lads are getting on form wise.

Obviously they're just the opinion of a single journalist at each game so not to be taken as gospel, but they're usually unbiased compared to how we might view Irish players and at least the people writing them have actually watched the games.

Most teams in the Premier League, Championship and some League 1 teams seem to have local websites that publish these each week. I usually look them up, so figured I might as well post them here as well while I'm at it. Feel free to add in any that I miss.

11/12/21

Championship

Mark McGuinness 8

Made a superb block to deny McGree just after half-time, a moment which typified his performance. Solid at the back, and took his goal well late on.

James Collins 6

Worked hard but didn't carry as much of a goal threat. Faded after the break. Subbed.

RYAN MANNING 4

On the fringes too often in the first half, but did manage to put a few crosses into the Forest box. Swansea needed more though, and Cabango needed more help too.

Michael Obafemi 5

Didn't really cause many problems as Forest defended deep.

Callum Robinson 8

Lively in the first-half, and solid on the ball but was unable to tuck away the chances created. His efforts were later paid off after Karlan Grant assisted the forward with Albion's winner.

Jayson Molumby 8

Returned from suspension in style after maintaining composure in midfield, contributing to his side's performance when picking up the play from midfield and stopping Reading's attacks.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman 8

The youngster kept composed in a role he's not too familiar with and worked tirelessly down the wing, while anticipating dangerous plays and reacting accordingly.

Fed Robinson with a superb cross in the second-half but the forward was unable to tap into the back of the net, while having chances of his own.

Alan Browne - 8

Magnificent throughout. Energy was through the roof and moved the ball at speed and with quality. His goal was outstanding and the perfect start for him under Ryan Lowe.

Sean Maguire - 5

Tracked back and never stopped closing down. Link-play was hit-and-miss but on the whole more good than bad. Didn't make the two good chances that came his way count.

Mark Travers - 6

Made an excellent save before Blackburn's first half goal, but given the high standards he has set himself this year, may be disappointed he didn't turn the ball around the post for a corner.

In the second half, Travers made an outstanding save after a one-against-one, with his legs akimbo and did, this time, concede a corner.

But the Irishman was let down by his defence as the resulting set piece was headed past him.

Robbie Brady - 5

Offered Scott Parker more of an attacking threat than the other players who have played at left back, not named Jordan Zemura, have done. But, Brady was occasionally guilty of forcing passes and crosses forward in the first half, leading to some cheap giveaways.

Scott Hogan 6

Made a nuisance of himself at the top of the pitch and provided the perfect foil for Deeney to make trouble against Flint and Curtis Nelson.

Darragh Lenihan - 9

Whatever money Lenihan is demanding give it him and double it. Yet another immense performance where he dealt with everything thrown his way (asides from the Solanke chance in the first-half but we'll gloss over that).

Sean McLoughlin 8

Outstanding challenge on Semenyo first half to deny the visitors a goal. Read the game well and got City out of a few pickles. Solid display.

Callum O'Dowda - 6

Made some bright penetrating runs down the left but his end product wasn't particularly efficient. But O'Dowda continues to grow into the left wing-back role and hard to see anyone shifting him.

Jason Knight 7

Fully committed as always, full of energy and drive. He was everywhere.

JACK TAYLOR 8.5

Excellent. He looks well suited to his role at the tip of the diamond.. He produced an outstanding chipped ball to set up the first goal and could have added a second if he could have brought down Tomlinson's equally exquisite pass. Taken off close to the end after putting everything into the game.

SAMMIE SZMODICS 6.5

Ran hard as ever but largely didn't see much of the ball. Grant found him with a nice cross into the box in the first half but it was floated high and he couldn't do a lot more with it than glance it on. His substitution changed the game.

League 1 (a bit hit and miss trying to find League 1 ratings)

Eoin Doyle - 5

Missed golden chance in the early stages of the game and saw second effort saved soon after. Worked hard but few other chances.

Ciaran Brennan 8

Barely put a foot wrong on his return to the side following a minor hip injury. Calm and composed on the ball. His decision-making was impeccable. Has stepped up well and taken his chance to stake a claim.

Gavin Bazunu 8

From start to finish, the Republic of Ireland teenage international was so commanding in his box and looked like winning everything that came his way. Excellent with his catching at crosses and just general positioning, in a week where he has been linked with interest from Liverpool, Bournemouth and numerous Championship clubs. Made an excellent diving stop late on to deny Adam Phillips' excellent strike from distance.

Sean Raggett (Star Man) 8

An imperious display from Sean Raggett in his role as captain in the heart of defence. Won absolutely everything that came near him as the Shrimps asked a lot of questions going forward, especially through League One's top scorer Cole Stockton. One of the lead contenders for the Player of the Season so far, with this display being up there with his best of the campaign.

Marcus Harness 7

Harness opened the scoring after eventually scrambling home with Pompey's fourth shot in as many seconds to end his four-game wait for his tenth goal of the season in all competitions. Created a good chance for Ronan Curtis to score before dropping off in the second half quite dramatically. Taken off in the second half, but his goal proved crucial, albeit with a lot of hilarity that went with it.

Ronan Curtis 8

A really good showing from Curtis, although he is yet to find that record-breaking goal. His long pass led to the opening goal and he also won the corner for Ogilvie's goal. His work rate throughout is so commendable, winning fouls and providing big contributions even on his last breaths

Mark Sykes 7

Drifted in and out of the game for much of the first hour, although deserved an assist for Taylor's second disallowed goal. Did not let a spurned chance affect him and kept his cool for a memorable winner.

Scottish Premiership (usually only the two Glasgow clubs, two Edinburgh clubs and Aberdeen matches covered)

Jonny Hayes 6

Some wayward crossing from the left hand side but did okay in the main.

12/12/21

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - 4

Dealt with the threat of Wilfried Zaha well on occasion, but the influential winger was still able to cause a lot of threat down the Everton right while the full-back couldn't really get forwards too often. Made a shocking mistake in taking a quick free-kick for the third goal.

Lenihan was heavily linked with Sheffield United when Chris Wilder was manager. I wonder if he'll try and bring him to Middlesbrough.

Aiden O’Brien: 6/10
Should probably have wrapped up the game after the goalkeeper completely missed his clearance but helped the team see out the final 15 minutes.

Premier League

Aaron Connolly 4

Frustrating evening on his return to the starting XI. Rarely had any service and was hooked on the hour for Mac Allister. January will be interesting.

Will Smallbone 7

Smallbone was making his first start in 334 days - but you would never have known it. The midfielder took 15 minutes to get into the game but then proved to be a top player for Southampton. He was subbed off on 70 mins.

Shane Long 5

On for his first Premier League outing of the season, he did not do badly but failed to really make any kind of impact on the game.

Adam Idah 3

Came on for Cantwell and played a couple of misplaced passes. Directed Gilmour's cross at goal with a header but an easy save for Martinez.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

Decent use of the ball and looked to get forward to support. Almost cost a goal with a poor attempt at a clearance.

Liam Scales 7

Young Irishman now has one Celtic goal and one assist to his name. Played that inverted full-back role well and got forward at will. Did get beaten to the ball by Baldwin for the goal.

I saw two different ones for Idah. The other one was worse, they gave him a 2!

Only a few of these today with all the cancellations.

17th and 18th December

Championship

Callum Robinson 3

Really ineffective playing out on the right hand side. Quality of his centres into the box in the first half were largely poor, and he spurned one decent chance when receiving the ball inside the area from Grant. Not able to replicate last week’s heroics.

Jayson Molumby (for Livermore 72) 6

Laid on a chance for Furlong who fluffed his lines. Brought energy to the fixture.

Mark Travers 8

Undoubtedly the best player. Made two key saves at the start of either half and was kept busy throughout. It seemed Travers made stops with every part of his body (chest, legs, of course hands). He even dived the correct way for the penalty, but was just out of reach.

Again, the Irishman was commanding in dealing with crosses and was left completely exposed by the lack of protection ahead of him.

Gavin Kilkenny 7

Perhaps Bournemouth's standout outfield player. Playing at the base of midfield, Kilkenny swept up second balls well, made key interceptions/blocks and tried to switch the play with intensity. This particular notion was reflected in Parker's decision to keep him on over Lewis Cook for the final 10 or so minutes.

Robbie Brady (Cook 78') - 6

Came on in the 'Morgan Rogers role' - eg; the change that brings about the three at the back. By then, Bournemouth had lost their shape and he could do little to turn the tide.

Darragh Lenihan 9

Enjoyed more touches in the opposition half than he did his own but he was absolutely colossal once more. Responded to everything Birmingham threw his away, dominant and aggressive. And the pass for his assist was exquisite.

Jack Taylor 6

He made several bursts forward off the ball, but was rarely seen, never mind found, by teammates. His passing wasn't great especially when it mattered.

Sean McLoughlin 6

Battled it out in the first half, couple of hairy moments including the booking. Peach of a ball for Lewis-Potter’s goal. Another decent showing for the most part.

League 1

Aiden O’Brien 6

Came on late in the game and got in a couple of positions to get on the end of loose balls but was unable to find a team-mate both times.

Scottish Premiership

Aaron McEneff 6

Impressed when he came on and inadvertently set up the winner with his shot that hit the post.
