Had this idea that I might start posting player ratings of Irish/Irish eligible players playing in the English leagues as issued by journos watching the various games to give a better idea of how our lads are getting on form wise.

Obviously they're just the opinion of a single journalist at each game so not to be taken as gospel, but they're usually unbiased compared to how we might view Irish players and at least the people writing them have actually watched the games.

Most teams in the Premier League, Championship and some League 1 teams seem to have local websites that publish these each week. I usually look them up, so figured I might as well post them here as well while I'm at it. Feel free to add in any that I miss.

11/12/21

Championship

Mark McGuinness 8

Made a superb block to deny McGree just after half-time, a moment which typified his performance. Solid at the back, and took his goal well late on.

James Collins 6

Worked hard but didn't carry as much of a goal threat. Faded after the break. Subbed.

RYAN MANNING 4

On the fringes too often in the first half, but did manage to put a few crosses into the Forest box. Swansea needed more though, and Cabango needed more help too.

Michael Obafemi 5

Didn't really cause many problems as Forest defended deep.

Callum Robinson 8

Lively in the first-half, and solid on the ball but was unable to tuck away the chances created. His efforts were later paid off after Karlan Grant assisted the forward with Albion's winner.

Jayson Molumby 8

Returned from suspension in style after maintaining composure in midfield, contributing to his side's performance when picking up the play from midfield and stopping Reading's attacks.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman 8

The youngster kept composed in a role he's not too familiar with and worked tirelessly down the wing, while anticipating dangerous plays and reacting accordingly.

Fed Robinson with a superb cross in the second-half but the forward was unable to tap into the back of the net, while having chances of his own.

Alan Browne - 8

Magnificent throughout. Energy was through the roof and moved the ball at speed and with quality. His goal was outstanding and the perfect start for him under Ryan Lowe.

Sean Maguire - 5

Tracked back and never stopped closing down. Link-play was hit-and-miss but on the whole more good than bad. Didn't make the two good chances that came his way count.

Mark Travers - 6

Made an excellent save before Blackburn's first half goal, but given the high standards he has set himself this year, may be disappointed he didn't turn the ball around the post for a corner.

In the second half, Travers made an outstanding save after a one-against-one, with his legs akimbo and did, this time, concede a corner.

But the Irishman was let down by his defence as the resulting set piece was headed past him.

Robbie Brady - 5

Offered Scott Parker more of an attacking threat than the other players who have played at left back, not named Jordan Zemura, have done. But, Brady was occasionally guilty of forcing passes and crosses forward in the first half, leading to some cheap giveaways.

Scott Hogan 6

Made a nuisance of himself at the top of the pitch and provided the perfect foil for Deeney to make trouble against Flint and Curtis Nelson.

Darragh Lenihan - 9

Whatever money Lenihan is demanding give it him and double it. Yet another immense performance where he dealt with everything thrown his way (asides from the Solanke chance in the first-half but we'll gloss over that).

Sean McLoughlin 8

Outstanding challenge on Semenyo first half to deny the visitors a goal. Read the game well and got City out of a few pickles. Solid display.

Callum O'Dowda - 6

Made some bright penetrating runs down the left but his end product wasn't particularly efficient. But O'Dowda continues to grow into the left wing-back role and hard to see anyone shifting him.

Jason Knight 7

Fully committed as always, full of energy and drive. He was everywhere.

JACK TAYLOR 8.5

Excellent. He looks well suited to his role at the tip of the diamond.. He produced an outstanding chipped ball to set up the first goal and could have added a second if he could have brought down Tomlinson's equally exquisite pass. Taken off close to the end after putting everything into the game.

SAMMIE SZMODICS 6.5

Ran hard as ever but largely didn't see much of the ball. Grant found him with a nice cross into the box in the first half but it was floated high and he couldn't do a lot more with it than glance it on. His substitution changed the game.

League 1 (a bit hit and miss trying to find League 1 ratings)

Eoin Doyle - 5

Missed golden chance in the early stages of the game and saw second effort saved soon after. Worked hard but few other chances.

Ciaran Brennan 8

Barely put a foot wrong on his return to the side following a minor hip injury. Calm and composed on the ball. His decision-making was impeccable. Has stepped up well and taken his chance to stake a claim.

Gavin Bazunu 8

From start to finish, the Republic of Ireland teenage international was so commanding in his box and looked like winning everything that came his way. Excellent with his catching at crosses and just general positioning, in a week where he has been linked with interest from Liverpool, Bournemouth and numerous Championship clubs. Made an excellent diving stop late on to deny Adam Phillips' excellent strike from distance.

Sean Raggett (Star Man) 8

An imperious display from Sean Raggett in his role as captain in the heart of defence. Won absolutely everything that came near him as the Shrimps asked a lot of questions going forward, especially through League One's top scorer Cole Stockton. One of the lead contenders for the Player of the Season so far, with this display being up there with his best of the campaign.

Marcus Harness 7

Harness opened the scoring after eventually scrambling home with Pompey's fourth shot in as many seconds to end his four-game wait for his tenth goal of the season in all competitions. Created a good chance for Ronan Curtis to score before dropping off in the second half quite dramatically. Taken off in the second half, but his goal proved crucial, albeit with a lot of hilarity that went with it.

Ronan Curtis 8

A really good showing from Curtis, although he is yet to find that record-breaking goal. His long pass led to the opening goal and he also won the corner for Ogilvie's goal. His work rate throughout is so commendable, winning fouls and providing big contributions even on his last breaths

Mark Sykes 7

Drifted in and out of the game for much of the first hour, although deserved an assist for Taylor's second disallowed goal. Did not let a spurned chance affect him and kept his cool for a memorable winner.

Scottish Premiership (usually only the two Glasgow clubs, two Edinburgh clubs and Aberdeen matches covered)

Jonny Hayes 6

Some wayward crossing from the left hand side but did okay in the main.

12/12/21

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - 4

Dealt with the threat of Wilfried Zaha well on occasion, but the influential winger was still able to cause a lot of threat down the Everton right while the full-back couldn't really get forwards too often. Made a shocking mistake in taking a quick free-kick for the third goal.

Lenihan was heavily linked with Sheffield United when Chris Wilder was manager. I wonder if he'll try and bring him to Middlesbrough.

Should probably have wrapped up the game after the goalkeeper completely missed his clearance but helped the team see out the final 15 minutes.

Premier League

Aaron Connolly 4

Frustrating evening on his return to the starting XI. Rarely had any service and was hooked on the hour for Mac Allister. January will be interesting.

Will Smallbone 7

Smallbone was making his first start in 334 days - but you would never have known it. The midfielder took 15 minutes to get into the game but then proved to be a top player for Southampton. He was subbed off on 70 mins.

Shane Long 5

On for his first Premier League outing of the season, he did not do badly but failed to really make any kind of impact on the game.

Adam Idah 3

Came on for Cantwell and played a couple of misplaced passes. Directed Gilmour's cross at goal with a header but an easy save for Martinez.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

Decent use of the ball and looked to get forward to support. Almost cost a goal with a poor attempt at a clearance.

Liam Scales 7

Young Irishman now has one Celtic goal and one assist to his name. Played that inverted full-back role well and got forward at will. Did get beaten to the ball by Baldwin for the goal.

Only a few of these today with all the cancellations.

17th and 18th December

Championship

Callum Robinson 3

Really ineffective playing out on the right hand side. Quality of his centres into the box in the first half were largely poor, and he spurned one decent chance when receiving the ball inside the area from Grant. Not able to replicate last week’s heroics.

Jayson Molumby (for Livermore 72) 6

Laid on a chance for Furlong who fluffed his lines. Brought energy to the fixture.

Mark Travers 8

Undoubtedly the best player. Made two key saves at the start of either half and was kept busy throughout. It seemed Travers made stops with every part of his body (chest, legs, of course hands). He even dived the correct way for the penalty, but was just out of reach.

Again, the Irishman was commanding in dealing with crosses and was left completely exposed by the lack of protection ahead of him.

Gavin Kilkenny 7

Perhaps Bournemouth's standout outfield player. Playing at the base of midfield, Kilkenny swept up second balls well, made key interceptions/blocks and tried to switch the play with intensity. This particular notion was reflected in Parker's decision to keep him on over Lewis Cook for the final 10 or so minutes.

Robbie Brady (Cook 78') - 6

Came on in the 'Morgan Rogers role' - eg; the change that brings about the three at the back. By then, Bournemouth had lost their shape and he could do little to turn the tide.

Darragh Lenihan 9

Enjoyed more touches in the opposition half than he did his own but he was absolutely colossal once more. Responded to everything Birmingham threw his away, dominant and aggressive. And the pass for his assist was exquisite.

Jack Taylor 6

He made several bursts forward off the ball, but was rarely seen, never mind found, by teammates. His passing wasn't great especially when it mattered.

Sean McLoughlin 6

Battled it out in the first half, couple of hairy moments including the booking. Peach of a ball for Lewis-Potter’s goal. Another decent showing for the most part.

League 1

Aiden O’Brien 6

Came on late in the game and got in a couple of positions to get on the end of loose balls but was unable to find a team-mate both times.

Scottish Premiership

Aaron McEneff 6

Impressed when he came on and inadvertently set up the winner with his shot that hit the post.

18 December

League 1

Anthony Forde 8.5
MAN OF THE MATCH

Excellent going forward all game, his touch and cross for Taylor's goal was pure class. Did well against the dangerous McClean too, although he was dragged out of position for the winger's strike.

Mark Sykes 8

Began like a man possessed and maintained that high energy start for much of the game. Some lovely link up play in tight areas.

19 December

Premier League

Ciaran Clark 3

Horrific mix-up with Dubravka led to the first goal. Signing a new centre back has to be a priority in January.

Scottish League Cup Final

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

Struggled to get to grips with Rogic and McGregor in the first half.

(Liam Scales not on long enough to rate)

Why are you clapping? You're pleased Ciaran Clark was poor? I can think of only two other current or past Irish internationals who would cop such a sledge (Whelan, Hendrick). Clark is playing in a trainwreck environment after a highly politicised takeover, his teammates are similarly overrun and their immediate futures in doubt. Clark certainly has his limitations, but I doubt any current Irish CB would fare much better in such a crappy set-up against one of the best attacks in the world. So much concession is regularly and understandably granted through green-tints here - making your little gesture against Ciaran Clark cheap.

20 December

Championship

John Egan 9

Up against Mitrovic and was excellent. Made it so hard for the Serbian. Only lost him on a couple of occasions, one when he got in behind but volleyed wide and the other in added-on time when he hit the crossbar. Other than that the striker won't have had a tougher opponent than Egan.

Enda Stevens 8

Did well up against Wilson and the overlapping Tete. Best performance yet under Heckingbottom, did little wrong and used his experience well.

Conor Hourihane 7

Tidied up well on the cover with the threat of Carvalho and Reed driving at the area. Has taken his chance well in recent matches.

21 December

EFL Cup

Aidan O’Brien 6

No chance to make an impression with Arsenal completely on top.

22 December

EFL Cup

Matt Doherty 7

Needed to impress and did well. Involved in the build-up to both Spurs goals and put in a couple of dangerous low crosses.

Caoimhin Kelleher 7

Good save from Daka early on but needed stronger arm to stop Vardy’s opener and caught out by Maddison’s shot from range. Decent stop to deny Dewsbury-Hall second half, though, and two fine stops in the shoot-out.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales 7

Continues to grow in stature in a green and white jersey and was Celtic's best performer on the night.

26/12/21

Premier League

Adam Idah 3

Came on with the score at 3-0 but could not provide much threat in attack for Norwich.

Championship

Richard Keogh 5

Slotted into middle of back three after coming on.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 7

A composed display from the former St Mirren man in the middle who is a real asset to this side.

Aaron McEneff 8

Thriving off getting more opportunities and worked well in tandem with McKay and Woodburn. Was a surprise to see him go off so early as he was playing so well, but may have been about trying to protect him.

Liam Scales 7

Afforded more licence to get forward at wing-back. Looks increasingly comfortable in a Hoops shirt.

James McCarthy 6

Promising performance. Superb pressing to win possession for Celtic's opener and always looked to get on the ball.

26/12/21

League 1

Warren O'Hora 6

Recovered from his fourth minute own goal but made some uncharacteristic mistakes.

Peter Kioso 6.5

Not really utilised with the ball at his feet but always popped up in the box as another attacking threat. Headed just wide in the first half and played a key role in the winner.

Troy Parrott 7

Excellent when he came on for the last half an hour. Always made space, looked eager to take players on and did so with a lot of success.

27/12/21

Championship

Jayson Molumby 7 (Star Man)

Played with energy and a positive mind-set as he drove forwards when on the ball. Produced the pass of the match to play Furlong in before the break, only for that opening to be snuffed out. Took his chance back in the starting line up.

Callum Robinson 3

Started as the leader of the line, and then got pushed out wide into a role he should favour more, but Robinson was toothless here. One or two nice touches, but worryingly little otherwise. When presented with a very good opening, he lacked the killer instinct.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman (for Furlong 75) - Not on long enough to rate.

Festy Ebosele 7

Started at right wing-back where he struggled to get into the game. Switched to the left during the first half. Got better and more involved as the game unfolded.

Jason Knight 7

Saw a rising drive sail high and wide early on, on the receiving end of a hefty challenge form former Rams defender Matt Clarke. Ouch! Typical graft.

Eiran Cashin (for Ebosele, 87) - Not on long enough to rate.

Mark Travers 6

A calmer, quieter 90 minutes than what Travers has been accustomed to recently, An indication of how well his concentration levels currently are, in the second half, Travers rushed out well to smother a dangerous ball over the top. The decision to charge off his line was fraught with risk, but he was decisive in his actions and confident.

His shot stopping ability may have received plaudits over the last month, but his temperament continues to be excellent.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Stuck to the task against a dangerous Cherries attack. Shaky on the ball on occasions but overall he did well.

Matt Doherty 5

Came on for the second half on the left and challenged Forster for a Winks ball and the keeper knocked it into his own net. A foul was given against the Irishman when Forster never had it under control.

He then was denied by the keeper soon after Son put him through. Kept having to cut inside on his right foot which did him no favours. He did show some good footwork to set up Gil for a late chance.

Shane Long 6.5

It was a bright start from Shane Long, who almost opened the scoring with a glancing header after only five minutes. He was, however, far too static at times. He was replaced after 70 minutes.

Adam Idah 3

Had a glancing header deflected wide but faced the same lack of service Teemu Pukki has had in recent weeks.

Here's another one for Doherty because Alasdair Gold at Football London does seem to have it in for him a bit...

Matt Doherty (Reguilon, 45’) 7

Added energy in the second-half and nearly scored after bursting into the box, only to finish unconvincingly. Had further chances and also made a late chance for Bryan Gil.

I would rate Doherty higher tbh, most of their attacks came down his side. He's actually a good crosser of the ball from the left.

Championship

Richard Keogh 7

Did well to manage the ball in behind on the turn and marshalled the defence generally well.

Darragh Lenihan 8

Aggressive, assertive and on the front-foot throughout, as we've come to expect with recent performances. And my word, he was dropping diagonals like a prime Tom Brady. By the end of the contest he was impeccable; nothing could get past him.

Lenihan had a rocky start for us against the USA but he's more than worthy of a second look with this kind of sustained form.

He's unfortunate that we have such strong competition there.

Not often there's a player of that standard who can't get a look in at all.

Maybe Chris McCann, Owen Garvan and Paddy McCarthy the last few.

Apparently was carrying an injury during that debut- it clearly has held him back a bit though as he looked way short of required quality on the night. Would expect him to sneak into next squad

That's the performance I remember most out of his caps. It's as bad a performance as I remember from an Irish player.

But it seems like he's developed a lot since then, this season especially. He's just unlucky with the competition ahead of him.

League 1

Mark Sykes 9 - Man of the Match

A man transformed in front of goal, his finish for the opener was as cool as you like. Movement and vision helped unlock the visiting defence time and again, while nobody on the pitch made more than his five tackles.

Anthony Forde - not on long enough to rate

30/12/21

Championship

Mark Travers 7

Other than a slight miskick in the first half, which resulted in a refreshing, unadulterated smash to anywhere from Lloyd Kelly, Travers was once more crucial in making key saves at key times. His two saves from Kieffer Moore in the opening 40 minutes came at significant points in the game. One after a matter of minutes, where Cardiff would have took the lead, and one with just under 10 minutes before half time, where the complexion of the game would have changed.

It is very rare for a goalkeeper to have everything in such working order, but Travers seems to be thriving in one of those periods.

Mark McGuinness 5

Deflected the shot into his own net for Christie's goal, but couldn't be helped. A couple of rash challenges early but generally OK.

James Collins (on for Moore 59) 4

An unenviable task for the striker. Only real thing of note was dragging a shot miles wide from 30 yards.

Max O'Leary 6

After surprisingly being named ahead of Dan Bentley, O'Leary showed good command of his penalty area and understanding with his defence on his first Championship start of the season. Two good low late saves kept the Robins in the contest but then City were undone from a corner.

Callum O'Dowda 7

Enjoyed the freedom of Bristol in the first half as he gave Albert Adomah a torrid evening. But as QPR locked things up after the break, the Republic of Ireland international didn't have quite the same space. If you're being critical perhaps he could have made more of those first-half openings.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Not his best performance. Saw the opening goal for the hosts deflect off his leg and into the net after just three minutes. Looked uncomfortable on the ball on occasions when pressed by the hard-working Antoine Semenyo but was better in the second half.

Jason Knight 7

Endless energy and commitment that typifies this battling Derby team.

Festy Ebosele (for Jozwiak, 63) 7

Provided pace and energy when he came on.

League 1

Ciaran Brennan (29) 2

Found it tough going coming on as a late replacement. Got caught ball watching for Sunderland's fourth. A tough evening.

Overall some really positive development of Irish players in the Championship and League 1 in the first half of this season I think. The obvious negative is that we've probably never had fewer players playing regular football in the Premier League, but the progression of younger players in the divisions below gives more hope for the future.

Out of contract in the summer and will be interesting to see what potential interest he'll have from bigger clubs. He's Blackburn through and through but he'll be 28 and it's probably going to be his last chance to negotiate the best contract that he can.

Championship

Richard Keogh 7

Likewise with Ekpiteta, Keogh had to play a risky game with a high line when pressure was on throughout. He was caught out a couple of times but looked assured in the second half.

Sean McLoughlin 6

Superb interception midway through the first half from a slide-rule Anderson pass which largely set the tone for a solid display.

League 1

Eoin Doyle 7

Saw a few first half opportunities go wide or saved, but slotted home chance when it came to him immediately after Millers went in front. Taken off with 20 minutes left.

Warren O'Hora 7

Had no issues keeping Gillingham's front line out, and even ventured forwards to get a shot away in the first half.

Peter Kioso 6.5

Got into some good attacking positions in the first half but, like the rest, was left frustrated with Dons' lack of finishing by the end.

Troy Parrott 6

Struggled to get on the same page as strike partner Mo Eisa as Dons attacks broke down in the final third. Looked decent on the ball.

Mark Sykes 6

Frustrating first half was summed up by a harsh booking and a poor miss. Quieter than he has been in recent weeks, before scoring the all-important goal.

2/1/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman 3

Playing left wing-back was not comfortable and that was clear to see from early on. He improved in the second period.

Shane Duffy 7

Although he did not make the defence impregnable, which is a very tough task, he added some assuredness at the back, particularly when they were up against it.

Caoimhin Kelleher 8 - Man of the Match

The biggest match of the young Irishman’s career and he certainly stood up to it.

Massive early one-on-one save at the feet of Pulisic that was very Alisson-like.

Made a great punch clear from a dangerous free-kick, which somehow turned into an assist for an absolute worldie struck past him. Talk about unlucky.

No chance for goal number two, but a top stop from close range just after the hour mark.

Really composed and moved his feet well to make the difficult turn out to be routine – Kweev was the anti-Ramsdale, basically.

Championship

Darragh Lenihan 8

Was caught out by the conditions on one too many occasions as his aggressive-style undermined him when pressing onto the midfield. Took a more reserved approach in the second-half but that didn't make him any less domineering.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Also impressive. Good on the ball, determined in the air and kept Troy Deeney quiet.

Hogan (for Hall, 84') 6

Mark McGuinness 7

Was given a stern test against the likes of Callum Robinson, but largely stood up well both in the tackle and in the air.

James Collins 8 (star man)

Worked his socks off all afternoon and deserved his goal. Hopefully there's more to come.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman 5

Composed on the ball. Hasn’t completed 90 minutes in a few weeks so there was a little rustiness evident. Combined well once or twice with Fellows in the first half but was virtually a spectator himself in the second.

Callum Robinson 5

Retained his place in the middle of the front three. We know it’s not his favoured position but irrespective of that Robinson has to show more.

Jayson Molumby (for Robinson 79) - not on long enough to rate.

Max O'Leary 6

It was notable early on just how many times he was electing to throw the ball to keep City in possession and on the move. Did exceptionally well to claim some tough-looking crosses but could have perhaps been a little more authoritative for Tom Bradshaw's opener.

Callum O'Dowda 6

Not quite at his flying best but he was always on his heels and looking to attack Danny McNamara but the Millwall right-back had a good game. Was defensively very committed, winning the ball back high up the pitch.

League 1

Ciaran Brennan (29, 4)

Second successive fixture has been thrown on due to an injury at the back. Outjumped in the box by Pennington for the goal.

No ratings for Millwall unfortunately but it sounds like Dan McNamara was once again one of their best players.

Championship

Jason Knight 6

Grafted as usual, battled away but could have done more defensively at the back post on Reading's second goal.

Festy Ebosele (for Forsyth, 57) 6

Alan Browne 8

Tenacious, aggressive and positive on the ball. Covered every blade of grass - was back in his own box blocking and at the other end spraying passes. Looking back to his best.

Sean Maguire 6

Helped look after the ball and run the clock down well.

League 1

Gavin Bazunu 8

Although Pompey dominated the first half, many of shots and key chances fell Cambridge's way. Gavin Bazunu did excellently to keep out George Williams and Sam Smith before the break, as well as commanding his box well. Continued well after half-time and got himself in front of everything he needed to.

Sean Raggett 7

Sean Raggett had started the game brilliantly for Pompey, commanding the back line and being crucial in clearing on multiple occasions. Tailed off slightly in the long spell after the medical emergency, getting booked for a foul on Joe Ironside.

Shaun Williams 5

It was a poor first half from Shaun Williams who was caught in possession on multiple occasions before the break. Had a good spell early in the second half but was less influential as the second half progressed, getting booked for a very late sliding challenge on Brophy.

Marcus Harness 8

Top scorer Marcus Harness was involved in a very heated incident with Cambridge's George Williams and despite putting his knee on his neck for sometime, he escaped punishment from referee Joshua Smith. Booed for the rest of the game, he did look like Pompey's most creative player, in the front three, with the Blues' strikers being shepherded well by Cambridge's back line. All of Pompey's best chances involved Harness, who was a threat throughout.

Ronan Curtis 5

Ronan Curtis grafted as he always did but his wait for a goal has now stretched to more than 1,000 minutes. He had a glorious chance created by Harness late on, which he skied over the bar.

Not sure what that Marcus Harness thing is about but it doesn't sound great.

I dont think he could! Hes 5ft nothing and was at full leap to try get a head on it.

I think the only possible thing he could maybe have done was to not compete for the header and hold his ground to try to block the shot afterwards. Competing for the header he couldn't reach threw him out of position and gave the Reading lad a free shot at goal.

But I agree, the comment is a bit unfair on him in that regard. Thought he had an unusually quiet game overall though, he's usually all action but didn't seem that involved in the game today.

7/1/21

EFL Trophy

Sean Raggett 7

A recent run of games with the armband in the absences of Clark Robertson and Lee Brown came to an end, although he commanded the back line as well as he would have liked to. Put in a great challenge shortly after Exeter's equaliser to deny Ben Seymour inside the penalty area.

Marcus Harness 7

It was Marcus Harness' deliciously clipped in cross that created Hirst's first goal since November, which the striker headed in excellently. Showed his quality at times, including a turn and nutmeg on Pierce Sweeney that was very easy on the eye. A quieter start after the break and was another one taken off in the lesser-seen four-man switch.

Ronan Curtis 8 (Star man)

Curtis was the match-winner, scoring twice in the final knockings to secure the win. His first ended a goal drought over of 1,000 minutes, heading in Jacobs' free-kick. He then finished late on when taking over Hackett's run to squirm an effort in.

8/1/21

FA Cup

Max O’Leary 7

It was also noticeable yet again that City played a lot more from the back with him in goal and were confident exchanging short passes with their keeper.

A massive onlooker in the second half but couldn’t do anything about Harry Wilson’s cross-come-shot that ended up going all the way in. His saves to stop Cairney and Kebano from making it 2-0 unfortunately won’t be remembered given the game circumstances but are well worth a mention.

Callum O’Dowda 5

It was a quiet day for the wingback who couldn’t bring much to the attack. He held a high line and helped the shape of City’s first half press, though it dropped off in the second half. His final pass and decision-making left plenty to be desired as he didn’t manage to build any chemistry whatsoever.

His moment to redeem himself came and went in the passing of one adrenaline filled right foot shot that blazed over and should have gone in.

Jordan Shipley 6.5

Put in a decent shift on only his second appearance of the season, working well with Jamie Allen at the top of the box midfield. Got a couple of shots away, one decent effort blocked by Davies to deny him a goal.

Festy Ebosele 7.5

Gave Fankaty Dabo a torrid time on Coventry's left with a number of storming runs into the home team's penalty area but needed to take more care with his final pass or cross. Had a good chance in the second half but took a touch and then saw his effort pushed away by the keeper. Would have been a higher mark had he added an end product to his good work.

Jason Knight 5.5

Wasted a good opening late in the first half when he sliced his effort well wide.

Gavan Holohan 7

Little anonymous first half but was part of lots of things Pools did well in the second right up until the final whistle.

Richard Keogh 6

Shaky at times with the rest of the side but looked the more composed in the second half showing leadership amongst a poor display from the Seasiders.

CJ Hamilton 4

Got into the right areas but two sitters missed in a wasteful display. Lack of quality on the ball when it mattered. One to forget for him.

Jack Taylor 5.5

Put a good shift in, but the quality we associate with this midfielder was largely absent. Gave the ball away too often.

Sammie Szmodics 7.5

A goal and an assist and a performance of great energy and workrate. Question marks remain over his finishing though. He could have easily had four goals.

Trevor Clarke 7

Looked capable of mustering something in the attacking phase with his elusiveness, but he had to go off with a knock just after the hour. His desperate challenge denied Dembele a certain goal at 1-1.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman 6

Opportunity to play in central midfield, where he’s thrived previously. One through ball for Townsend early doors was excellent, and he completed a few more eye-catching passes besides. Always the feeling that Ismael wants a little more from him, but there can be no complaints about his application.

Callum Robinson 6

Nothing stuck for him in a poor first half. Sometimes he could’ve done more, on other occasions he was just a little unfortunate, but he was in the right place and the right time to apply the finishing touch.

Shane Duffy 6

Decent in defence but should have scored when he blazed a volley over the bar from close range midway through the second half.

Evan Ferguson 7

Very encouraging outing for the youngster. One instinctive effort with the outside of the boot dropped just over. Good positional play and build-up play. Had a goal disallowed for offside.

Scott Hogan 4

Absolutely nothing came his way for the whole game. A thankless task.

Seamus Coleman 6

Started the game in another new position and it took him a little while to get to grips with it. He looked much more comfortable again when switching to his natural role in the second period.

Sean McLoughlin 8

Commanded the heart of the defence very well against Rondon, who didn’t get many chances in front of goal. Intercepted vitally on more than one occasion.

Ryan Manning 6

The Republic of Ireland international won a number of free-kicks and was arguably Swansea's most promising player early on.

Michael Obafemi 5

Lining up against his former employers, Obafemi was starved of service but used his pace as Yan Valery was sent off. Unable to threaten though. Subbed ahead of extra time.

Shane Long (78') 8

He set up Southampton's extra-time equaliser with some good work down the right and then scored the goal that put them ahead.

Gavin Kilkenny 6

Parker used Kilkenny in a differing role to what we've been accustomed to seeing, with the young Irish midfielder stationed slightly more advanced and towards the right. At times in the first half, he would drift wider to receive the ball, eliciting Mariah-Welsh to take up a position akin to a traditional number 8. It was a subtle, but clever ploy from Parker to bring the pair's best qualities out.

Robbie Brady (Anthony 64') 6

Brady was introduced on the right hand flank, making his return following niggling injury issues. The half an hour played should stand him and Bournemouth in good stead ahead of the congested fixture schedule.

League 1

Anthony Scully 8.5

Produced a brilliant finish for his goal and caused problems down the left all afternoon.

8/1/22

FA Cup

Jimmy Dunne 7

Really impressive during the first half, when he won plenty of aerial duels and made a great challenge on Will Grigg to deny the striker a shot on goal on the 17-minute mark. Gave the Rotherham attackers very little all afternoon and put in a real shift for his side in the middle of defence.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Injured himself making a tackle in the opening exchanges and yet he soldiered on until the half-time interval with a minimum of fuss, executing his duties like a real leader. Hopefully his injury is nothing severe.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 6.5

Like his defensive counterparts, didn't really have much defensive work to do before being taken off for attacking options

Peter Kioso 6.5

Saw a lot of the ball in the second half but didn't take on Amankwah enough.

Troy Parrott 6.5

Never really got a sighting of goal. Looked tricky on the ball but got surrounded quickly and forced backwards.

Luke McNally 6.5

In the right place to deal with several first half crosses, including one spectacular sliding block and clearance off the line. Guilty of switching off for the second goal.

Mark Sykes 5

Less influential than recent weeks and you could see him getting frustrated, particularly after the altercation with Maguire. Generally tidy in possession, just unable to do much with it.

9/1/22

FA Cup

Caoimhin Kelleher 7

Good footwork and starting position to help clear long balls in behind the defence and start attacks from the back. No chance on the goal from close range.

Ended the half with a punch clear a bit like his one for Kovacic’s volley, but this time saved the header which came back his way.

One lucky escape very late on as the ball got stuck under his studs but did well to recover and clear.

Greg Cunningham 5

Caught out in the first half when Davies was slipped in for a chance. Supported well in the final third on a couple of occasions and kept it relatively tidy on the ball - apart from once in the first half.

Sean Maguire 6

Battled away up there against the physical Morrison and Nelson. Didn't shirk the fight and did well with his back to goal more times than not. Won the penalty; very little in the way of goal scoring chances.

Joel Bagan 5

Cannot fault the effort, but just looked a little awkward at times out wide. Some decent crosses and some nice link-up play aside, felt a little too predictable.

James Collins 5

Threw himself about and held up the ball reasonably well, but seldom looked a genuine goal threat. A missed opportunity following his heroics at the Hawthorns.

Adam Idah N/A

Came on for the final ten minutes and could have scored but scuffed his effort.

Jack Bonham 7

Steady hands, saving well from Smith in first-half, and had to stay on alert.

Matt Doherty 6.5

Got up and down the right side pretty well and was a constant outlet in behind. Hit the post but the ball didn’t quite fall for him in the box. A decent performance.

Conor Hourihane 5

Quiet from the midfielder. Didn't make much of an impact.

David McGoldrick 5

Will be really disappointed not to have given United the lead moments before Podence pounced. Unmarked and picked out by Norrington-Davies he had only the keeper to beat inside the area but rather than fire low and hard he tried to dink it over Ruddy and the keeper got a hand to it before it was cleared.

EFL Trophy

Ronan Curtis 5

For all of Ronan Curtis' effort and running, he seemed to lose most 50/50s that went in for. Fresh from his goal heroics at Exeter, he was some way off that and was among those taken off in the large scale changes after an hour.

Sean Raggett 6

It was a rare semi-rest for Sean Raggett, who did not grace the pitch until the second half when replacing former Rotherham colleague Robertson. Shortly after coming on, his attempted interception did not go to plan as Knibbs got away to score from just outside of the penalty area. Better as the second half unfolded but still some way below his par.

Marcus Harness 5

Top scorer Harness was back at the ground he did well not to get sent off at eight days ago. Some nice touches and moves but did not add the influence Pompey will have hoped for from their only player in double digits for goals this term.

League 1

Aiden O'Brien (sub) 6

Brought a burst of energy and it was his cross that led to the foul on Pritchard for the penalty. Impact faded after the third.

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Never really troubled defensively. Barked orders throughout, especially in demanding more from Watson and Corbeanu in the second half.

Peter Kioso 6.5

A late change for Watson. Kept the ball well.

Troy Parrott - not on long enough to rate

12/1/22

EFL Cup

Matt Doherty 4

Offered no threat down the left flank, frequently cutting inside on his right foot and slowing down attacks. Having struggled at Stamford Bridge, his selection again was strange.

Premier League

Adam Idah 8 (Man of the Match)

Turned a couple of West Ham players inside out in the opening 20 minutes. Proved to be a handful. Struck a ferocious shot that was creeping inside of the post but was denied by an excellent save from Fabianski.

15/1/22

Premier League

Adam Idah 8

Played with physicality and maturity well beyond his 20 years and was rewarded with the first top flight goal of his career.

Seamus Coleman 3

Sold Anthony Gordon short with an under-hit pass in the build up to Norwich’s second goal – one of several such occurrences from Everton players – and had his hands full dealing with Milot Rashica before making way.

Championship

Mark McGuinness 6

Solid enough and went through the game relatively untroubled. Made a good chance for himself late on which was saved.

James Collins 6

Ran his socks off and showed real physicality when he needed to. Had a couple of near misses when he tried to latch on to crosses.

Darragh Lenihan 8

In the first-half he dealt with Cardiff's aerial threat efficiently, even if he did encounter a few problems on the ground.

Second-half, Harris had a few successes down his flank but past the hour mark he was simply flawless, giving the Rovers backline an intensity to which they followed. Even at right wing-back he impressed!

Mark Travers 8

Travers made three excellent saves in the first half to avoid the game being out of reach by the break. Despite the atmosphere and teammates seemingly perturbed, he commanded his box well and on more than one occasion, called for calm.

While he could do very little about either goal, the second half then followed suit, with a solid save from Jordan Clark's effort in the latter stages. Also displayed his improved composure on the ball, irrespective of his central defenders putting him into trouble with overhit back passes.

Festy Ebosele 7.5

Had a speedy battle up and down the left with former Rams player and United right back Jayden Bogle. His strong run played a key role in Lawrence's second goal.

Jason Knight 7

Worked his socks off for the team fom start to finish.

Eiran Cashin (for Lawrence, 83) - not on long enough to rate.

John Egan 5

A threat when he went up for long throw-ins but not up to his usual defensive standards.

David McGoldrick 5

Unable to provide the quality the game and his team so badly needed.

Conor Hourihane (for Berge, 68) 4

The midfield was crying out for quality but he was unable to provide it.

Max O'Leary 5

Two fine saves in the first half, low to left to thwart Neeskens Kebano and then an acrobatic tip over the bar to deny Mitrovic, had kept City in the game but then the floodgates opened and the City goalkeeper found himself repeatedly picking the ball out of his net. He could hardly be blamed for any of them, either.

Callum O'Dowda 5

Made some incisive runs and gave Kenny Tete something to think about but didn't provide enough service when he did find an opening. And, like so many of his teammates, spent much of the middle to latter part of the first half just trying to stay in position and plug the dam.

Ryan Manning 7

Returning to the back three, Manning defended well and was spectacularly denied by Lee Nicholls in the first half. Got forward so well in the second half.

Cyrus Christie 7

On his Swans debut, the Fulham loanee was composed on the ball and showed encouraging signs of linking up with the attack. The new signings will hugely benefit from the minutes. Subbed.

Michael Obafemi (for Christie) 6

Spurned a glorious chance to equalise but was a threat.

Aaron Connolly 7

Had a really bright debut. 67-minute run out where, first-half in particular, he made some excellent runs off the ball and troubled the Reading defence. Unfortunate not to score.

Jack Taylor 5.5

Played an important part in the Posh goal and, although he was often left toiling by the visiting midfield, it was a surprise to see him taken off with his side chasing the goal.

Sammie Szmodics 5

Busy as always and played a key part in the best Posh attack of the first-half which Jack Taylor couldn't convert. Faded from the game second-half when Posh possession all but dried up.

Jordan Shipley 8

Filled in brilliantly at left wing-back and could have had two goals in the first half, while he was denied by the keeper in the second. Defended well.

Alan Browne 6

Found some great space in the first half and that proved crucial for the opening goal. His low shot was helped into the bottom corner and Browne was right at it in terms of energy and desire. Would've liked to see him more involved in the final third in the second half.

Greg Cunningham 7

Solid on his return to the side in the absence of Josh Earl. His experience is clear to see when he plays that role and Cunningham used the ball well, while bombing up and down the left flank.

Sean Maguire 6

Poor pass in search of Barkhuizen after finding himself in a good pocket of space. Started one fine PNE move off but couldn't help kill the game off.

Scott Hogan (for Hernandez, 83) - Not on long enough to rate.

Jimmy Dunne 8

Another eye-catching display from the young centre-back, who put in a colossal performance to deal with West Brom’s physical and pacy forwards. Seemed to relish a great battle with giant striker Daryl Dike who impressed after coming on for the last half an hour.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman 5

Some of his passing and vision was very impressive on the right. Also did really well to shield, when under pressure, the ball out of play when facing his own goal. Struggled in the second half, though, as QPR came on strong and he was beaten to the ball by Austin.

Jayson Molumby 4

On the end of a rash challenge by Dickie, who was booked. Molumby saw plenty of the ball in the first half as Albion dominated and moved the ball pretty well, but he lacked composure. Technically must be better, because some of his passing was wayward here as a result.

Callum Robinson 4

Very quiet in the first half, when he really struggled to impact the game bar the part he played in the build up to Phillips’ chance, laid on a plate by Grant.

(Danny McNamara - the 28th Irish player to feature in the Championship today, don't have a rating for him as usual but he seems to have been Millwall's best player going by their supporters forum.)

League 1

Aiden O’Brien 7

Looked in good form when he came on. Scored our goal, showed quick feet on multiple occasions and his more physical approach over Pritchard helped the team.

Anthony Scully 7.5

Combined superbly with Bramall and deserved a goal. A good return to the side after missing the Sunderland game.

Gavin Bazunu 7

Gavin Bazunu was one of two players rested for Pompey's two Papa John's Trophy games this month and was recalled in the hope of increasing his lead as League One's Golden Glove award. Found himself picking up the ball twice out of his own net before the break, getting beaten in a one v one by Eisa before a long-range effort from Corbeanu that he could do little about. Made some excellent saves late on to keep Pompey in it.

Sean Raggett 6

Sean Raggett made one or two pleasing blocks and was solid for large parts. Got bullied by Scott Twine in the build-up to Corbeanu's winner which proved to be crucial in succumbing the Blues to defeat.

Shaun Williams 6

Shaun Williams was back after a two-match rest. A few good ball carries and moments of keeping possession but Pompey needed more energy and it became clear how much Thompson changed the game in the final third.

Marcus Harness 7 (Star man)

Where creativity and quality was lacking for large parts, Marcus Harness was one of a few who could come out of the game with some credit. Dribbled well and knew certainly how to beat a man going forward. Hung in a few good moments and whenever Pompey had some signs of promise or excitement, Harness was involved more often than not.

Ronan Curtis 5

For all his chances, especially in the first half, Ronan Curtis did little to test Dons' Jamie Cumming at all. He wasted a three versus two chance, as well as a couple of half chances that Cumming held with ease. Despite his landmark goals against Exeter City eight days ago, he seems short of his best where scoring goals is concerned.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 8

Didn't miss a beat in the centre of the defence. Strong in the air, won his tackles and kept the back line in check as the defensive general. Thrived off the atmosphere late on.

Peter Kioso 8

Like O'Hora, seemed to thrive off the hostile atmosphere in the second half especially. Playing in the centre, Kioso stood firm and kept disciplined.

Troy Parrott 7

Coming on in the latter stages, still managed to cause troubles with his tricky feet and won a late corner which effectively put the game to bed.

Mark Sykes 5

Like at Lincoln, he showed a lot of energy without the end product and grew frustrated. Made the wrong decision in the final third a couple of times.

16/1/22

Championship

Sean McLoughlin 7

About the pick of the bunch for me with some monstrous last-ditch blocks to deny certain goals. Growing in confidence by the game and showing the belief that he belongs in the Championship.

Jack Bonham 7

Safe hands and good positioning in a first league start for the summer signing.

They generally come from the local/regional websites that follow the clubs. Wales Online, Yorkshire Live, Football Scotland, that kind of thing. Easy to get them for the Premier League teams and nearly every Championship club.

The only exception is Millwall, possibly because they're a small team in a big city so don't get as much coverage, so I never have ones for McNamara or Alex Pearce.

Once you get down to League 1 it's a lot more hit and miss, but there are local websites for Portsmouth, MK Dons, Oxford and Sheffield Wednesday that do them, so I post those ones. Unfortunately nothing that I can find for Rotherham, Wigan and a few other clubs with Irish players in League 1.

In Scotland Football Scotland usually do the Glasgow and Edinburgh clubs as well as Aberdeen. I don't bother with League 2, I'd imagine there would be very few clubs covered at that level anyways.

I used to always look them up on a Saturday evening anyway, so figured I might as well start copying and pasting them on here. They're each just one person's opinion, but they're useful as a way to follow a large number of players - 30 Irish players played in the Championship this weekend, which is major progress compared to a year or two ago.

Just wish there more Premier League players to follow, but hopefully that will happen again in time.

Just wish there more Premier League players to follow, but hopefully that will happen again in time.

YTM, man, just keep doing what you're doing. This is so appreciated.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone, glad people are finding this useful.

18/1/22

Championship

Scott Hogan (for Jutkiewicz, 64) 4

Won a couple of headers and at least put in half a shift.

Alan Browne 9

Fueled by frustration at the officials, he ran himself into the ground and led like a true captain. His finish for the goal was exceptional and Browne was the driving force behind the comeback in midfield.

Greg Cunningham 6

Slotted in at the back well and his experience certainly helped as United pushed for a third. Booked for a foul on McGoldrick but did a job.

Joe Rafferty 7

Didn't risk the ball in bad areas and supported in the final third, on both sides of the pitch. He is the type of character that will embrace being down to ten-men and two goals down. Did himself no harm.

John Egan 6

Had a hand in the first goal, with a bullet header well saved that was cleared to the edge of the area. Not his only effort at goal and was a threat in the opposition box. Did well at the heart of the defence, but will have been disappointed to see both goals from the positions they were scored.

Conor Hourihane 7

Restored to the starting line-up and delivered a great ball for Egan to attack in the build-up to Bogle's opener. Made an impression in the middle of the park, getting his foot on the ball and keeping United in possession.

Enda Stevens 6

Steady away down the left. Handled the threat of two players well, Potts and Barkhuizen but gave United a real attacking threat in the second half with some good runs forward.

McGoldrick (Brewster, 70) 5 - no comment given.

League 1

Gavin Bazunu 7

A good outing from Gavin Bazunu started instantly when meeting a well-struck Luke McCormick effort with a low diving effort. Did not have masses of saves to make but was commanding when dealing with crosses and just looked tidy throughout.

Sean Raggett 8

Sean Raggett will be disappointed not to have scored his first goal of 2022 when he came close twice in the second half. His first header forced a brilliant save out of Nik Tzanev, turning the second one over late on. Defended solidly throughout and met everything brilliantly.

Marcus Harness 5

The most noticeable part of Marcus Harness' first half showing was getting booked for a foul on George Marsh, retaliation for Marsh catching Harness seconds earlier. Did not come close to breaking through Wimbledon's back line and missed a chance to play Walker through on goal on the counter before being taken off late on.

Shaun Williams 5

Shaun Williams featured for the final 20 in place of Thompson, the man who he lost his starting spot to. Really good defensive awareness and ventured forward too when possible.

Ronan Curtis 5

Ronan Curtis came on up front after only the second game of this league season where he found himself starting on the bench. A half volley with just over ten minutes remaining forced a good save out of Nik Tzanev.

Football Scotland ratings for Irish players in SPL (no comments provided):

Jonny Hayes 7
Aaron McEneff 5
Dan Cleary 5
Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

19/1/21

Premier League

Matt Doherty (Emerson 46’) 6

On at half-time and looked much better in his preferred position and thrust proved crucial in creating leveller. Display surely too late to convince Conte he can be permanent solution, though.

Championship

Sean McLoughlin 5

Struggled against Ben Brereton Diaz at times - no shame in that - and his distribution was loose.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Had to compensate for Rankin-Costello on the right side but was often erratic, hasty and tried to force the matter far too many times when in possession - not quite the domineering performance we've seen in recent weeks.

20/1/22

EFL Cup

Caoimhin Kelleher 7

Produced fine fingertip save to turn early Lacazette free-kick on to crossbar and confident with distribution and handling. Impressive.

21/1/22

Premier League

Adam Idah 6

A quieter game compared to his last two performances. Gave away silly fouls in the second-half as he chased down defenders. His dangerous ball across the face of goal led to Juraj Kucka's own goal.

22/1/22

Premier League

Ciaran Clark (on for Lascelles 69) 6

Helped Newcastle see out their first away clean sheet of the season with minimal fuss.

Championship

Max O'Leary 6

Little to do in the first half, boosted his early confidence with a save from distance. Had little chance with Collins' header for the opener but showed composure on the ball with his feet.

Callum O'Dowda 6

A consistent performance out on the left without any fireworks. Worked hard out of possession and almost had an assist when Martin's header was cleared off the line.

Mark McGuinness 3

A rare off day for the big centre back. Drawn out of position far too many times, allowing Martin to score his second.

James Collins 6

A superbly-taken headed goal and it gave him a little spring in his step. A decent outing from the striker.

Jason Knight 6

Battled away but it was tough for Derby's midfielders in the second half.

Festy Ebosele 5

Flashes of his power and pace in the first half, but only flashes. Replaced after an hour.

Scott Hogan 6

Trademark Hogan. At times engaged and dangerous, at others reactive and on his heels. In the right spot for his goal and with better delivery might have had more.

Richard Keogh 9

One of his best performances in a Blackpool shirt. Ekpiteta allowed him the space to take risks on and off the ball and he took full advantage, stepping up to combat Benik Afobe before he caught him on the turn practically every single time. What a player he has turned out to be.

CJ Hamilton 8

Worked his way into the game and came into his own in the second half. Glimpses of the old CJ that was apparent in League One and did well to get into the box in the build-up for the winner.

Mark Travers 7

Good. Again. When Bournemouth were rocking and rolling in the second half, Travers made two good saves, both with differing techniques.

After his second, which was a strong hand to turn it over the bar, Travers sped out to scream at his defence for not getting tight enough. Also dominant in his handling and coming for crosses. As always seems to be the case, was left exposed for Hull's goal and could do very little about it, either.

A shortfall in confidence began to pervade into Travers by the end, with even him making a handling mistake, which wasted what precious time was left.

Sean McLoughlin 9

Like his comrades, McLoughlin had a difficult first half but in the second was a colossus. Again.

Jordan Shipley 8.5

Picked up where he left off last week with another eye-catching performance, excellent going forward where he linked up well with the forwards and played some lovely touches. Scored a brilliant equaliser with a sweetly struck half volley to raise the roof.

Jimmy Dunne 7

A few too many hurried clearances which put his side under pressure once or twice, but otherwise it was a typically committed display from the young Irishman as Rangers held firm in the final 15 minutes.

John Egan 6

Led the line well from the back. Luton offered a real physical threat at the top end of the pitch but he always looked in control.

Conor Hourihane 6

Weak in the tackle at times in the first half and should have done better when he had the opportunity to clear an attack that ended with Foderingham making a save. However, he got on the ball a lot more in the second 45 and was much improved.

David McGoldrick (Ndiaye, 82) 5 - no comment provided.

Jack Bonham 6

Couldn’t claim cross for Fulham third or get back in position to stop blaster.

Ryan Manning 8 (Star Man)

Solid defensively and always looked threatening. Scored another belter to put Swansea ahead and was well denied by Daniel Iversen soon after. Fine performance.

Cyrus Christie 8

Got into some promising positions but didn't have the end product needed. But the Fulham loanee was excellent in the second half and ran riot on Preston's left flank. Unlucky not to score, too. Subbed.

Greg Cunningham 5

Moved to left-back in the second half after playing in the back three in the first half. Looked off the pace at times and jumped into a few duels. Gave it his all.

Joe Rafferty 5

Played left wing-back and competed for everything like he usually does. Replaced when PNE moved to a back four. Limited the attacking output down that side.

Alan Browne 6

Quiet in the first half but grew into it in the second and had moments. Started to get on the ball more and find himself in dangerous positions, but couldn't provide that moment to get PNE level.

Callum Robinson (for Clarke 74) 7

Two important passes for teammates to create the goals for Grant and Diangana. An important contribution.

Jayson Molumby (for Phillips 74) 6 - no comment provided.

Jack Taylor 5

Slower in thought and movement than his midfield opponents. Won a few headers, but little else of merit.

Sammie Szmodics (For Grant, 68) 5

Rarely touched the ball.

League 1

Aiden O’Brien 6

Only came on for the last few minutes but it was a lively cameo, driving forward and helping us keep possession to see out the win.

Gavin Bazunu 6

Much of the time Gavin Bazunu was tested on his trip to Wearside it was as a result of Pompey losing the ball deep in their own half. Did well to deny Embleton midway through the first half after a Ronan Curtis error, although Sunderland's follow-up was a chance he spilt before it was eventually hacked away. Defensive mistakes gifted the goal, with Bazunu getting beaten one on one.

Sean Raggett 5

Sean Raggett started in the centre of defence and like Carter to his right, was caught out too much in playing back. Shortly before Embleton's opener, he was tackled by a Leon Dajaku who turned wide at an open goal when winning it back. Whether it was the state of the pitch or Sunderland's pressing, there were too many issues for Pompey's back line.

Marcus Harness 6

Marcus Harness started fantastically, breezing past players as if he was an alpine skiier for much of the first half. Similarly to most, virtually non-existent after the break, although Michael Jacobs' appearance perked him up and others. Needs to get back to the scoring form Pompey fans have become used to this term.

Ronan Curtis 6

Ronan Curtis was among those key in the bright start as Pompey flew out of the traps. He showed good skill and good link-up play in the early exchanges. Later in that opening half, it was when beating multiple players on a run backwards where he gifted Sunderland a chance, with Ross Stewart cutting out his pass before Sunderland failed to make the chance count. Missing in the second half like many and was the first to be replaced.

Shaun Williams 5

Within minutes of coming on in midfield, Shaun Williams was booked for a late challenge. Did very little to change things when coming on.

Anthony Scully 8

Worked like a Trojan down the left. Set up Marquis’s goal with a perfect cross. Will be disappointed not to have done better with a late chance after Marquis returned the favour.

Scottish Cup

Liam Scales 7

The Irish left-back provided a lovely assist for the Hoops' opener. His whipped delivery from the left was laid on a plate for Giakoumakis to tap beyond David Hutton in the Alloa goal.

It was just the start of another good night for the 23-year-old as he continues to grow in stature and impress in a green and white jersey. With the likes of Greg Taylor, Josip Juranovic, Adam Montgomery and Reo Hatate capable of playing his position, there is plenty of competition.

However, Scales has shown his versatility as he loves to drift inside on the underlap and contribute to the Celts' attacks.

James McCarthy (for McGregor 45) 5 - no comment provided.

Aaron McEneff (for Halliday 69) 6 - no comment provided.

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether to include him or not. Seems strange to leave him out though, as he grew up in Waterford. Don't know if he has an Irish passport or not.

Similarly I'm not sure about including Gardner Hickman either, as he is not currently eligible for us, but is apparently trying to get his passport so I have included him for now when he plays - he didn't get on today.

22/1/22

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7

The vocal presence in defence, and dealt well with Doncaster's threats for the most part.

Conor Coventry 6.5

Battled hard in a promising start for the club. Showed glimpses of what he could bring.

Troy Parrott 6

The ball never seemed to drop for him and when it did, his shots were blocked close to source. Forced Jones into a good save in the first half but didn't step up when needed.

Mark Sykes 9 (Man of the match)

Was one of United's liveliest players when they were under the cosh and found a new level at wing back. His delivery improved and he carried the ball well, but his defensive work most caught the eye. Showed great energy to track back and make some key interceptions.

Luke McNally (for Moore, 46) 8

Another highly impressive display. Coming on at half time is never easy, but he won everything in the air and his lung-busting run from one end of the pitch to the other was a highlight.

Will Keane 8

Two more goals takes his seasonal tally to 15, also hit the post - real talisman of the squad.

James McClean 7

Corner led to the winning goal and teed up Tom Naylor to hit the bar, got forward at every opportunity.

23/1/22

Premier League

Matt Doherty 5

Playing on the right of the midfield four, he made no inroads into Chelsea’s half and lacked the pace to help deal with Hudson-Odoi.

It will be interesting to see if there are any moves as we approach the last week of the window. McGrath, Scully and Sykes are three that spring to mind in terms of maybe getting a move to the Championship. Great to see Sykes kicking on.

Yeah Sykes does seem to be one who is constantly getting very good reviews. Oxford are 6th in Lge 1 and battling hard for a playoff place, so I'd imagine they'd try to keep him rather than sell at this stage, but he is out of contract at end of the season so they might have to cash in.

22/1/22

Championship

Peter Kioso 5.5

Was behind one of Town’s best moments in the first period when getting forward on the right and picking out Jerome for an opportunity. Struggled to contain the threat of ex-Hatter Norrington-Davies after the break though, the Blades easily on top.

24/1/22

Championship

Darragh Lenihan 9

Poor Connolly didn't stand a chance of winning anything in the air and the forward resulted to assaulting him in a bid to topple the Rovers captain. Dominant once more and decisive on the last line of defence time and time again.

Aaron Connolly 5

Ball just couldn't stick with him. Some things were unfortunate and just didn't come off for him, at other times he frustrated as he rushed things when he could have taken a touch to control the ball.

25/1/22

Championship

Scott Hogan 7

Made plenty of runs - one of which sent him clear in the first half when he laid the ball on a plate for Jutkiewicz. Came out to the right to cover without the ball. Can't really quibble with his efforts and deserved his equaliser.

Jack Taylor 8.5

A most welcome return to form for the midfielder. Very combative and usually used the ball well when he had it. Denied a great team goal by a fine save.

Sammie Szmodics (for Clarke-Harris 86) - not on long enough to rate.

Jordan Shipley 7.5

Back in his best position at the top of the box midfield, he worked hard and played some nice touches at times and was unlucky not to score from a header. Another good shift from the Cov Kid whose named was sung by the fans throughout the second half.

Jack Bonham 5

Saved defenders’ blushes in one-on-one with Gyokeres but left goal wide open for opener.

Max O'Leary 5

Barely had anything to do apart from pick the ball out of his net in the first half. His kicking was very poor with numerous wayward clearances and passes. Could have come off his line to show more authority for Luton's second.

Callum O'Dowda 5

Started quietly but grew into the contest as the game went on. Showed endeavour to get forward in an attacking sense but often lacked the quality to pick out a man. Lack of end product was once again his downfall and he was eventually subbed for Joe Williams with 15 minutes to play.

Ryan Manning 7

Lining up against his former employers, Manning was so composed throughout and regularly made sure he was in the right place at the right time.

Cyrus Christie 7

Got forward well and looked dangerous when cutting in from the right flank. Used his experience to nullify some QPR attacks too.

Michael Obafemi (for Piroe) 6

Some decent flashes and thought he had won it late on, but was very unfortunate to be offside.

Scottish Premiership

Joe Shaughnessy 8
Charles Dunne 8
Alan Power 7
Connor Ronan 8 (Man of the Match)
Jamie McGrath 6

25/1/22

Championship

Peter Kioso (SUB) 7

On as Lockyer cramped up and he made some excellent clearing headers in the final five minutes, plus seven added for stoppage time, to ensure Luton got through to the final whistle unscathed.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Continues to impress with his committed performances at the heart of the defence.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Held the line well, limited Burton to precious little when they went long and direct.

Conor Coventry 7.5

Added to the hustle and bustle of the midfield, giving McEachran the space to control the game. Showed off some great touches and confidence on the ball.

Troy Parrott 7.5

His best game for Dons for a while. Lively, enthusiastic, he linked well with Harvie on the left and hit the post in the opening half.

26/1/22

Championship

Gardner-Hickman (for Kipre 45) 5

Robinson (for Phillips 56) 5

Molumby (for Livermore 73) N/R

(No comments provided for any of the West Brom subs)

Alan Browne 9

Absolutely outstanding from the skipper. His energy level was through the roof and his quality in possession was a constant. Created chances for Riis over the course and was relentless in everything he did.

Greg Cunningham 9

Got in an early battle with Furlong and went on to win it emphatically. Never stopped going up and down the left flank. Played an instrumental part in both goals.

Sean Maguire 7

Competed well after replacing Evans and carried on after taking a nasty blow to his ankle. Fought hard to help the team see the points home.

Posted By: You Tell Me

28/1/22

Championship

Jack Bonham 6

Opener spun over his head.

29/1/22

Championship

Mark Travers 8

Travers is developing a habit of making saves at big moments. Sandwiched by the half time whistle, Travers made two stops at key periods of the match. One strong hand just before the break and another after. A growing confidence seems to also provide a louder presence, regularly demanding teammates in front to improve standards.

Conceivably, Travers has become Bournemouth's most consistent performer in recent times.

Richard Keogh 8

As ever he won everything in the air and was calm under pressure when on the ball in order to play out from the back.

Sean McLoughlin 8

Calm, and composed in the first half and that theme continued against on of the league’s best strikers in Piroe.

Ryan Manning 5

The Republic of Ireland man has been in good form of late, although he wasn't at his best this afternoon. A couple of decent defensive interventions were important, though. Booked for a poor challenge late on.

Cyrus Christie 6 - Star Man

The only Swansea player to look threatening in the first half, particularly after swapping to the left flank. Carried a threat after the restart too. Not much more he could have done.

Michael Obafemi (for Fulton) 6

Unable to convert a chance to drag Swansea back into the match but got into some promising positions.

Darragh Lenihan 8

Stood up to the challenge of Onyedinma impressively and didn't allow substitute Harry Cornick a sniff in the second period. A hooked clearance in the first-half to deny Jerome who was lurking at the back post was the pick of his highlights.

Aaron Connolly 5

Just not dropping for him so far. Worked harder but added little quality in the final third and missed two decent opportunities.

Jordan Shipley 6

Another determined display from the Cov Kid at the top of the box. Got a couple of shots off in the first half an hour but lacked enough power to trouble the keeper. Mis-kicked a glorious opportunity to give City the lead early in the second half.

Alan Browne 5

Difficult time up against the excellent Han-Noah Massengo, who seemed to man mark him to great effect. But he kept going, battling and was there to play the pass through to Potts at the end.

Greg Cunningham 5

Taken off at half-time, with Jay Dasilva getting the better of him a few times and Cunningham having put in a huge shift on Wednesday - which may have had an impact.

Max O'Leary 6

Nothing to do in the first 45 minutes but will feel he could have done better with the equaliser. He palmed Archer's strike from distance right into the path of Riis who couldn't miss. Made two excellent punches from dangerous crosses in the second half. Had no chance with the equaliser.

Callum O'Dowda 6

Missed a decent opportunity to double City's lead in the first half but blazed over with his weaker foot. Could almost copy and paste from last previous performances - worked hard but again struggled to deliver in the final third.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Having been caught out by an early ball over the top, Dunne soon settled down and turned in an accomplished display, as well as heading home from a corner to make it 4-0.

John Egan 6

Had a glorious chance in the first half to put United in front, but headed over from close range. Marshalled everything at the back and United never really looked troubled in the second half.

Conor Hourihane 7

United managed to get him on the ball a lot in this game and he was good in possession, showing a good range of passing to keep United ticking over. Forming a nice tidy partnership with Norwood in the middle.

David McGoldrick (Brewster, 22) 6

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 6

Went to number 10 role on his Wanderers debut. Some bright sparks on his first showing and nearly scored with curling effort.

Anthony Scully 8

Superb down the left. Once piece of play – a superb first touch and cut-back to Cullen – underlined his squad. While he hasn’t been prolific recently, the consistency of his performances has been very good.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales 5

The Irishman was restored to the starting line-up in place of Greg Taylor. He was keen to get forward and help the attackers whenever he could but it left a slight imbalance down the left and Ange opted for Juranocic at the break.

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

Ross Tierney 6

League 1

Mipo Odubeko 6

An impressive debut that would have been even more so had he converted one of the plethora of chances he had. He consistently popped up in dangerous positions in the box and was always keen to get his chances away. He was guilty more than any other of not taking big opportunities.

Luke McNally 8

Seemed to win absolutely everything in the air, which was important against Jackson's long throws. Untroubled defensively and went close to scoring late on.

Mark Sykes 8

Assisted Bodin's goal and gave the hosts a lot to think about on that right flank. Worked hard throughout and again showed his energy with his tracking back after the break.

Anthony Forde (for Bodin, 84) NR

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Another 'typical' O'Hora performance. Calm, assured, confident on the ball and gave up very little.

Conor Coventry 7.5

Did the nasty stuff in midfield, breaking up play and offloading. Continues to build his reputation in the centre.

Troy Parrott 7.5

Leading the line, he suffered from a lack of chances and had to float wider or deep to get involved. Was good on the ball when he did though, and harried the Wycombe defence constantly.

30/1/21

Jason Knight 6

Never stopped working for the team.

Festy Ebosele 6

Provided pace and threat to try and unsettle Birmingham.

Scott Hogan 5

Really should have made it 2-0 when clean through just before half time. Made no mistake shortly after with an adroit finish to Woods' ball in. Missed again soon after - all in all should have had a hat-trick.

Mark McGuinness 8

Popped up with some vital interceptions and sound positioning out of possession. A couple of scary moments with the ball at his feet, though.

James Collins (on for Hugill 69) 7

Flung himself at one cross from Ralls and put in the hard graft late on to help close the game out.

31/1/21

League 1

Gavin Bazunu 6

Both goals that found a way past Gavin Bazunu were ones were he could have felt hard done by. Washington's opener came controversially, when Chuks Aneke's header was saved brilliantly before Washington converted. Aneke was well offside when having the first effort. The second saw a diving Robertson header wrong-foot him. He did not have masses to do barring that, with Pompey blocking much of Charlton's chances.

Sean Raggett 6

Defensively good from Sean Raggett in large parts. Early on, he exhibited some brilliant long passing but struggled with the short stuff late on. One or two questionable decisions on the ball as the game progressed but in defending, did not do much wrong. Close to a late equaliser.

Shaun Williams 5

Some of Shaun Williams' passing early on was really poor but a second half back injury after being inadvertently wiped out by Robertson led to his night getting cut short. Did well on one occasion to start a counter but not a lot more than that, although some of social media criticism he is getting is rather harsh.

Marcus Harness 5

Marcus Harness showed the occasional good dribble and move, won a few fouls but barring that, did very little. Still some way off the form in front of goal and with the ball he showed across October and November.

Ronan Curtis 7

Ronan Curtis' run and cross proved crucial in setting up Jacobs' strike within ten minutes of coming on. Had a great chance of levelling when put through by Morrell, but snatched at the chance and turned wide.

1/2/22

Championship

Greg Cunningham 6

Didn't really do much wrong but struggled to influence the game in the final third much. Linked up well with McCann on one occasion. Captained the side and played over an hour.

Alan Browne 6

Brought on for the final 10 minutes and added fresh legs at a needed time. Slipped Potts in down the right and helped out defensively.

Cyrus Christie 6 (Star man)

The January signing always carried a threat and set up Olivier Ntcham early on. So dangerous when running with the ball and is well aware of the picture around him. Already looking like a fine piece of transfer business.

Ryan Manning 6

Put in some dangerous crosses from the left and tried to link up with Hannes Wolf. Had to drop deeper after Naughton's injury though, but was defensively solid.

Michael Obafemi 5

Handed a rare start, Obafemi very nearly poked Swansea ahead on 14 minutes following Grimes' sublime pass. Pace threatened to cause Luton problems, although the end product didn't come, despite the chances being there. Perhaps needs a run in the side to get up to full speed.

League 1

Mipo Odubeko 6

Another with little to work with.

Chiedozie Ogbene 8

Outstanding throughout, he richly deserved his goal.

Josh Kayode (for Grigg, 70) 6

Won the late penalty and set up a chance Harding should have finished.

Kieran Sadlier 7

Slotted right into the Wanderers attack and showed promosing signs off the bench in the final third.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

A solid showing up against Hearts' superb duo of Baningime and Devlin, not afraid to put a tackle in.

Ryan Sweeney 7

1/2/22

League 1

Luke McNally 8

Passed another big test. You expected him to win a lot of headers, but there were also some brilliantly timed tackles to stop Wigan in their tracks. Played a little on the edge compared to Moore though. Booked.

Mark Sykes 7.5

Combined with Brannagan to stunning effect for the goal, his bravery at the start of the move and composure at the end were pure class. His energy remains a real asset at the end of games and he dug in.

2/2/22

Championship

Mark McGuinness 6

Positioned himself well for a number of dangerous crosses, cutting out the danger. One or two clumsy tackles earned him a yellow.

Jason Knight 7

Terrific work rate for the team again, never stopped running.

Festy Ebosele 6.5

Stearman's early red card meant Ebosele had to drop into the left-back role. Still managed a number of strong surges.

Eiran Cashin (for Sibley, 61) 6

Scottish Premiership

James McCarthy (Reo Hatate, 72) 4

On for final stages, neat and tidy on the ball.

Championship

John Egan 7

Dealt with a lot of what Birmingham threw at United aerially, was left exposed for the opening goal as United were caught out of position on the break and could do little to prevent the hosts from opening the scoring.

Scott Hogan 6

Really energetic in the first period when he pressed willingly and covered Basham's incursions into midfield. Stayed alert in the second too - and nearly played in Taylor - but the ball didn't drop for him in the area.

FA Cup

Aaron Connolly (sub for Sporar, 90) 6

Played up alongside Watmore. Put himself about and saw a late chance saved by Dean Henderson.

5/2/22

FA Cup

Tay Adaramola (for Ward 85') - N/R

A brilliant moment for the Academy scholar to get on and make his debut. Received a very warm reception from the home fans when coming on.

Seamus Coleman 6

A solid outing for the Everton captain, who operated on the right in Everton's 3-4-3 formation. A bit sloppy in possession at times, but he was full of energy down the right.

Sammie Szmodics (Sub for Clarke-Harris, 46) 7

Introduced from the bench at the break and ran his heart out for the team. Sneaked behind the defence on a couple of occasions and pressed impressively.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Won his headers and looked relatively comfortable throughout in a game Rangers largely dominated. Enjoyed a good tussle with the physical Johnson Clarke-Harris.

Jeff Hendrick 6

A steady rather than spectacular debut for the on-loan Newcastle man after coming off the bench at half-time. Showed some good quality on the ball and passed it efficiently but was unable to unlock the home defence.

Shane Long 6

Shane Long was nowhere to be seen for much of the game, one he really needed to impress in if he is to force his way back into the side.

Jordan Shipley (63, for Maatsen) 7

Switched to wing-back when Bidwell went off and did well, sticking to his task.

Adam Idah 6

Should have scored in the first-half when one-on-one with John Ruddy. Caused some issues for Wolves with runs in behind but was caught in two minds on the ball.

Championship

Richard Keogh 9

Big responsibility on him without Ekpiteta but he rose to the occasion, not easy for him against a direct front three but he made it look like it was.

Max O'Leary 5

Made a smart save in the early stages but had little chance with Blackpool's three strikes. Didn't offer much of a presence to deal with Blackpool's set-pieces. Was let down by his defenders today.

Callum O'Dowda 3

Was arguably at fault for the opening goal when he dwelled on the ball for too long instead of hacking it clear. Blackpool recycled the ball, delivered the cross and City were 1-0 behind. Was subbed off at half-time which probably summed up his performance.

Sean McLoughlin 5

Not his usual self in the first half, one pass in particular caused his side trouble. Didn’t look as composed as usual.

Alan Browne 7

A real captain's performance. Unlucky with the disallowed goal but looked sharp from minute one and played a key role in the win. Used the ball effectively and showed his quality. A few shaky moments but had the athleticism to recover.

Greg Cunningham 8

Trademark Cunningham. Got into some great areas in the final third but ensured he was never caught out defensively. Thoroughly professional performance from the Irishman.

Ryan Manning 6

Good in the air and always willing to get forwards. Booked in the first half and then - despite going for the ball - shown a second yellow after the restart. A harsh but probably fair call.

Cyrus Christie 8

He showed so much composure when it was needed and put his body time and time again with blocks and tackles. What a shift. A tackling machine.

Michael Obafemi 7

In the right place to head home his second goal of the campaign and came close to notching an assist for Paterson soon after. Top work rate to press from the front. A good all round display before being subbed.

League 1

Anthony Scully 7.5

A threat down the left hand side throughout and seems to have built a decent understanding with Cohen Bramall. Unlucky not to be on the scoresheet after striking the crossbar, and good play created chances for John Marquis.

Gavin Bazunu 8 (Star man)

Gavin Bazunu's long ball was the root of Pompey's equaliser after seeing McNally head past him minutes earlier. Made a string of important saves at 1-1, none more so than one to deny Brannagan when being put clear through on goal. Managed the team really well, by no means shy to dither at goal-kicks when winning the ball back. He made a further string of top stops after the break and will deservedly feel so hard done by with late wondergoals that he could do absolutely nothing about.

Sean Raggett 8

Sean Raggett was given the captain's armband and started in the heart of the back three. As skipper, he was fantastic. A game that suited him with his needed to throw himself at every cross, shot, pass and whatever else Oxford tried to get a way back into the lead. Made at least three goal denying blocks in the first half. More brilliant blocks in the second half and was among those who did not deserve only a point from the game.

Ronan Curtis 8

Ronan Curtis was also given a chance from the off, having come off the bench to provide an assist for Jacobs against Charlton Athletic on Monday. A brilliant backheel from a challenging position was crucial in the build-up to Jacobs' goal. When Morrell was sent off, Curtis was moved to a makeshift midfielder. Did not see a lot of the ball, but when he did, he battled and cleared. Broke forward on one counter and was clinical in getting his first league goal since October.

Aiden O'Brien - N/R

Aiden O'Brien was on in the last ten minutes for a debut when coming on in the wake of Brannagan's goal. Did his best force a late goal when fouling Moore when applying pressure.

Chiedozie Ogbene 6

Not at his brilliant best, but still a decent performance.

Josh Kayode (for Grigg, 77) 5

Most of his time on the pitch was spent watching the game from a distance.

Mipo Odubeko 6

This wasn’t an afternoon of plentiful chances for the striker. Instead, it was about hard running and disrupting the opposition defence. He tired in the second half.

Scottish Premiership

Connor Ronan 7

The general feeling down Paisley way when Jamie McGrath departed for Wigan at the end of the January window, probably surprising for those from the outside looking in, was not one of concern.

A huge reason for that was Ronan - the Irish midfielder gives the Buddies just as much, if not more this season, as McGrath did in his two terms in Renfrewshire.

That was evident this afternoon as, fabulous goal besides, the Wolves loanee was industrious, creative and clinical when given the chance.

Joe Shaughnessy 6
Alan Power 6
Charles Dunne 6

FA Cup

Evan Ferguson 6

Replaced Moder with 11 minutes remaining.

Matt Doherty (Emerson 86’) N/R

Championship

Darragh Lenihan 6

Produced an impeccable challenge on Piroe when Rovers needed him most to keep the team in it. Lacked the composure to finish Giles' cross as he spent the second-half operating as a wide forward.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7

Shocked even himself with a fine strike to win it early in the second half. Shaky in the first, like his back-three partners, but remained solid later on.

Conor Coventry 8

His best outing in a Dons shirt. Mopped up everything, read the ball well and contended with the difficult pitch easily. Silenced namesake McGrandles in the second half.

Troy Parrott 8 (Star Man)

Relentless throughout, and at both ends. Made a nuisance of himself to the Lincoln defenders, got an assist while making some important tackles late on to keep them out at the other end.

Luke McNally 7.5

Becoming a real threat from set-pieces, not just scoring but going close on a few other occasions. Looking more confident on the ball, although should have done better in the tackle for Portsmouth's second goal.

Mark Sykes 8

Link-up play was excellent before the break, particularly with Williams and Bodin. Moved wider as United chased the game and consistently worried the Pompey defence. End product could have been better.

6/2/22

Caoimhin Kelleher 6

Clutched a near-post cross early on and confident with ball at his feet. Escaped with a yellow after bringing down Mark Harris miles out of his area shortly after interval.

Mark McGuinness 6

Turned inside out by Jota, who rose beyond the former Arsenal man for the opener. A harsh lesson for the Irishman.

Joel Bagan 7

Probably one of his best showings in a Cardiff shirt. Looked reasonably comfortable on the ball, but was turned in knots by Curtis Jones.

James Collins 6

Threw himself about well, but the challenge of Virgil van Dijk and co proved too great. Can't really be blamed for that, but a quiet outing. Subbed.

6/2/22

FA Cup

Gavin Kilkenny 4

Operated higher and wider in the first half, in a rather flat midfield trio. Had a part in Boreham Wood's 38th minute goal, when his loose pass was picked up on the edge of the box.

But the switch to a more favoured deeper role second half saw a slight improvement, but nonetheless, it wasn't the display Kilkenny was looking for, having almost departed on deadline day.

Scottish Premiership

Ross Tierney 6

Was busy as a bee up against Ralston showing good enthusiasm down the left for Motherwell.

Aaron McEneff 4

A number of moves broke down when they went toward the Irishman on the right side of the front three. Hooked at the break.

8/2/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman 5

Got down the flank with a lot of promise in the opening 45 minutes, including a great run and cross into the box which maybe should have been better capitalised upon, but then faded in the second half.

Championship

Jordan Shipley 6.5

Deployed at the top of the box where he linked up nicely with those around him and worked hard throughout.

Richard Keogh 9

Says a lot about the improvement in Keogh that a game of this intensity is something he could manage with ease. What a player.

Jason Knight 7.5

Midfield dynamo who covered every blade of grass in the first half.

Festy Ebosele 8.5 (Star Man)

Hull failed to cope with his power and pace, and surges. He was a real thorn in the Tigers' side. Strong performance. An assist for Derby's second goal. He then rifled a shot across Ingram and into the net for the third goal early in the second half. Unplayable at times. Should have done better defensively on Hull's goal.

Sean McLoughlin 5

Rattled. Never looked comfortable from the first minute and it showed throughout. A night to forget.

Cyrus Christie 4

Pass completion rate in the first half was so poor and he couldn't offer a threat in attack. Tiredness finally caught up with him following a hectic introduction to life with the Swans.

Michael Obafemi 4

Put himself about in a desperate attempt to get on the ball, but had precious little luck. Starved of service, in truth.

League 1

Gavin Bazunu 7

Gavin Bazunu was forced into a couple of brilliant stops early on as Burton looked to open the scoring and then get level before the break. Little he could do about Ahadme's close range finish, although his wait for a clean sheet is slowly stretching.

Sean Raggett 8

Raggett got his first goal since September to give Pompey the lead, converting well from a corner. Barring an early foul that led to a booking on Ahadme, Raggett won his battles and was really solid in holding the back line together, allowing Carter and Connor Ogilvie to be expressive in going forward. A deserved goal, esepcially for some of his defensive heroics late on.

Ronan Curtis 7

The absences of Joe Morrell and Shaun Williams led to Ronan Curtis being kept in the side in a deeper role. Put in a real shift, as he did at Oxford. A really good outlet in the air from long balls and set-pieces, although a first half yellow card leaves him just a booking away from a two-match suspension. Battled hard after the break, putting a shift in as an unnatural number ten role.

Kieran Sadlier 6

Looked bright when coming on.

Anthony Scully 7.5

Not his best night but had the shot which led to the first goal and then produced a lovely assist for the second.

Championship

Peter Kioso (SUB) 7

Only on for 10 minutes or so but made his presence known with some thumping clearances as he got stuck in from the second he came on to ensure Town weren’t breached. Just seems to love defending!

League 1

Anthony Forde 5.5

Tough game to make his first start for nearly two months. Started OK, but McConville got the better of him as the match went on. Set-pieces were generally good.

Mark Sykes (for McGuane, 55) 6.5 Man of the Match

Added some impetus when he came on and worried the home defence. Decision-making could have been better.

Mipo Odubeko 4

Looked particularly tired and would have benefitted from being taken off if that was a possibility. Struggled to make an impression.

9/2/22

Premier League

Adam Idah 8

Clever work in the build-up for the first goal when he laid it off for Pukki to finish. Made some good runs in behind and bullied the Palace defence. Excellent tackle on Schlupp as Palace broke down the left flank.

Shane Long (84') - N/A

He came on too late to score a rating but his sub helped to run the clock down.

Championship

Mark Travers 9

For a young, developing goalkeeper, his concentration is a precocious trait. He had very little to do for the first 51 minutes, before being called into action and with the strength of his right hand, keeping out a close range header. Perhaps if that went in and Birmingham had halved the deficit, things would have been even more difficult after Jefferson Lerma's red card.

His second big save, though, from Lukas Jutkiewicz, was the pick of the bunch. A superb display of athleticism. Travers keeps making key saves at key moments in a match.

Scott Hogan 5

A fruitless evening for the 29-year-old when nothing dropped for him and his runs were not picked out.

Darragh Lenihan 5

Regardless of your view on his second yellow, the argument remains that it was an unnecessary lunge given he was already on a caution and the nature of the referee. Found himself being lured out of position by Davis on several occasions in the first-half, who seemed to get the better of the captain.

Max O'Leary 7

A few dodgy kicks in the early stages, but dealt well with the crosses that came into the box. A safe pair of hands and stood up to the task in the final 15 minutes when Reading peppered his goal. No chance with the penalty and will feel unlucky not to have kept a clean sheet.

Callum O'Dowda (on for Pring, 67) - 5

A huge sigh of relief with seven minutes left on the clock when he lost possession deep in his own half before Reading's half-hearted penalty appeal. A lucky escape. Subbed off with an apparent injury in the final few moments.

Mark McGuinness 7

Calm and collected at the back all evening. An assured performance.

Joel Bagan 7

Built on his solid showing at Anfield with another strong performance here. Looks to be full of confidence at the moment.

Alan Browne 7

Led a couple of counter attacks and put in a real shift. Moved the ball at speed and with precision. Helped win the fight in the middle of the park.

Greg Cunningham 6

Gutting for him to be forced off with a nasty looking muscle injury. Had started fairly well and put a couple of crosses into the box.

Aaron Connolly (For Sporar, 81') N/R

Lively after coming on. One acrobatic effort.

John Egan 6

Up against Andy Carroll and not the easiest of tasks but the former Newcastle striker didn't have it all his own way. Had moments where he won a few flick-ons and looked dangerous but Egan also got the better of him at times as well.

Conor Hourihane 6

Involved in the build-up to Sharp's opener, spotting McGoldrick in space and threading a lovely ball into his feet. Also delivered a beautiful cross into Sharp that was ruled offside and then received a really poor tackle from Livermore that led to the sending off.

David McGoldrick 6

A lovely flick for Basham to fire over early in the match and then played a neat ball for Baldock who had continued his run into the area and found Sharp for the opener. Unlucky not to have had a hand in another goal when sending Ndiaye clean through.

Jayson Molumby (for Diangana 45) 4

Brought on to shore things up in midfield, but Molumby offered relatively little here.

Callum Robinson (for Mowatt 78) N/R

Dara O’Shea (for Furlong 86) N/R

Scottish Premiership

Ian Lawlor 7

A poor bit of goalkeeping allowed Hearts to take the lead, but the Irishman made amends.

A really good double save from McKay then Simms kept the score at 1-0, and he made further stops in the second that kept Dundee in it before the equaliser.

He produced the goods again deep into stoppage time when he tipped Moore's goal-bound header round the post to secure the points.

Ryan Sweeney 7

The big defender had his work cut out in the first half, but made a vital goal-line clearance to deny Barrie McKay.

Sent a header over the bar from a good position shortly before half-time, but was solid after the break.

Battled well against Ellis Simms and didn't give the big striker a sniff for the most part, while he did well to nulllfy Liam Boyce as well.

Jonny Hayes 6

Premier League

Seamus Coleman 8

Rolled back the years by popping up in the six-yard box to open the scoring. Led from the front and did not shirk his defensive duties. Like being in 2013 all over again.

Championship

John Egan 6

Not an easy afternoon for the Republic of Ireland international. Difficult first half up against Ward, sold himself short on one occasion then involved in a mix-up which gifted the opposition an opening. Much better in the second half, though, and got to grips with Ward.

Mark Travers 8

Rather obviously, Travers could do very little for Josh Bowler's emphatic, whipped finish (he probably instantly knew even diving for it would be pointless). On a sticky surface, Travers' passing was good and tried to build through the thirds, with Nat Phillips often being the one to bring the ball out from the back.

Also, as is becoming habit, made a key save early on in the second half from Blackpool essentially pushing Bournemouth out of the game. Then spreading every fibre of his body to stop a point-blank effort in the final 10 minutes. Another performance where he is so far ahead, unfortunately, of his outfield team mates.

Sean McLoughlin 7

Robust and smart in his work early on against a lively Fulham attack. A really fine showing from the Irishman.

Aaron Connolly 7

Really positive return to the side. His off-ball runs stretched Derby and he worked hard throughout. Rewarded with his first Boro goal, assuming the dubious goal panel don't take it off him.

Jason Knight 5

Worked away as usual but without really effecting the contest.

Festy Ebosele (for Thompson, 46) 6

Came on for the second half, had an impact but never looked at full speed. He was doubtful for the game due to a hamstring issue.

Mark McGuinness 6

Started reasonably well, but was guilty of a couple of errors as the game wore on. One of which nearly handed Benik Afobe a goal.

Joel Bagan 8 (Star Man)

Stood up well defensively. Nearly scored a brilliant goal midway inside the second half after dummying two players in the box. Took his goal well in stoppage time.

Alan Browne 6

It was not a game that allowed midfielders to get on the ball and dictate but he kept battling away and played an influential role in the goal, providing the assist for Archer.

League 1

Anthony Scully 7.5

Set up another goal with a perfect pass into the feet of scorer Cullen. Full of running before tiring in the second half.

Gavin Bazunu 6

Gavin Bazunu was back in the clean sheets but did not have to do a lot to get his 12th League One shutout of the season. One good save to deny Reo Griffiths was about it for the Republic of Ireland teenager, especially after some big saves in recent matches.

Sean Raggett 8 (Star Man)

Sean Raggett lost the armband to former Rotherham United colleague Clark Robertson but it did not lower his level of importance. As Joe Dodoo was given a golden chance to put League One's bottom side ahead, the former Norwich City man got his hip in the way to keep it goalless before the break. Another important block came from him in the second half and he just mopped up in the centre of the back line superbly. A second goal in as many games for the centre-back came his way in the dying embers, nodding in a well-taken free-kick.

Marcus Harness 7

The issues in midfield had led to Marcus Harness losing his place in the last two games, but Pompey's top scorer was back in the side in the unlikely role of right wing-back Certainly not the most natural of roles for the only player in the squad with double figures for goals this term. Got up and back well with his crosses other being great but wasted or were not met. When he got them right, they were impressive and it was the source of the opening goal. Close to his tenth league goal of the campaign late on, seeing his shot saved by Jonathan Mitchell.

Ronan Curtis 7

Not as impactful as he was against Burton Albion, initially, Ronan Curtis had a hand in what was good about the Blues in the second half. Had a hand in the move for Hackett's opener, Hirst's second and set-up O'Brien's third with a great low cross. Some hit and miss crossing but made the one for O'Brien's goal count.

Aiden O'Brien 7

Just seconds into his Fratton Park debut, O'Brien scrambled in at the back post to turn in Curtis' cross, although he was at first confused as to what had happened.

Mipo Odubeko 4

Replaced Dodoo after an hour and made very little impression on the game.

Championship

Jimmy Dunne 6

Solid enough. Won several key headers.

Jeff Hendrick 6

Neat and tidy but did not impose himself on the game.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Went about his business in typical O'Hora fashion. Limited Ipswich to very little.

Conor Coventry 8

Followed up his stand-out showing in Fleetwood with another at home. Fought valiantly and harried Sam Morsy all afternoon as he tried to pull the strings for Ipswich.

Troy Parrott 7

A regular sight for the Irishman - surrounded by Ipswich players. Excellent work-rate without much to write home about otherwise.

Luke McNally 7

Would have been totally understandable for him to miss this one after a horrific week, so his performance deserves a lot of credit. Only gripe was the header that fell to Fossey for Bolton's second.

Mark Sykes 5

Drifted in and out of the game. Needed to be sharper defensively for Bolton's second and third goals, giving Fossey too much space on both occasions.

13/2/22

Premier League

Matt Doherty 5

Did little against his former club to suggest he is an upgrade on Emerson Royal and continues to look the shadow of the player who caught the eye at Molineux.

Championship

Max O'Leary 6

Showed safe hands by denying Obafemi early on but looked a little dodgy when trying to come out to punch at the corners in the first half. Had no chance with the equaliser. Was forced off in the second half through injury after bravely diving in to beat Obafemi to the ball.

Ryan Manning 7

A tad fortunate to get away with a loose pass in the first half and couldn't quite offer the attacking threat needed at the other end. But read play well on numerous occasions to make interceptions and was much-improved after the restart and put in a fine ball that led to Cyrus Christie's goal.

Cyrus Christie 8

Got into plenty of promising positions on the right wing but his final ball often let him down. Scuffed shot earned him an assist for Michael Obafemi and sheer persistence led to him scoring his first goal to make it 2-1. Top shift.

Michael Obafemi 8 (Star Man)

Used his pace to good effect on a couple of occasions and looked the most likely to trouble the Robins' defence in the first half. In the right place to notch his third goal of the campaign on what was a very encouraging display. Subbed to a standing ovation.

League 1

Chiedozie Ogbene 6

Like Johnson for Wednesday, he was disappointingly subdued.

Scottish Cup

Liam Scales 7

The left back is showing with every appearance that he belongs in this Celtic squad. The Irishman is also proving to have an eye for goal and it was his stunning strike off the post that put the hosts in front.

He constantly got forward in the second half and whilst he wasn't overly troubled defensively, did his job in that regard with a minimum of fuss.

Jayson Molumby 5

Brought into the side in place of suspended captain Jake Livermore. Usually offers energy and industry, rather than a more technical outlet, and he began brightly in this game but faded in the second half.

Callum Robinson 3

Brought back into the starting XI, but Robinson was ineffective in the first half. He didn’t get close enough to Carroll to supply the centre forward and looked out of sorts with his passing and general decision making.

15/2/22

Championship

Mark McGuinness 6

Made a couple of really good headed clearances.

Joel Bagan 8 (star man)

The brightest spark. Exuding so much more confidence with the ball at his feet and far more assured defensively. His goal was excellent.

Jordan Shipley 6

He was fairly uninvolved in the build up play throughout this game and was substituted just past the hour mark for Martin Waghorn. He did however record a key pass on the night as well as a shot on target.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Probably the pick of the Rangers’ defence, but should have scored in the first half when the ball dropped to him from a corner and he shot tamely at Millwall keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

John Egan 6

In control, never really flustered at the heart of United's back three and stepped out with the ball a lot into midfield.

Conor Hourihane 6

Compliments Norwood really well. The pair bring an element of calm to proceedings and, especially at home when United have the majority of possession, allow the side to dominate the ball and pin the opposition in.

Sean McLoughlin 9

Ingram got him out of jail when he misjudged a header but he learnt from it and was excellent in keeping out United.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 6.5

Went to the number 10 role and made his first Bolton start. Forced Ben Garratt into good save from free-kick in perhaps Bolton's only first half positive.

Mipo Odubeko (sub) N/R

Tried his best to inject a bit of energy up front.

Worked tirelessly to both bolster the defence and support the attack, as well as a running feud with the crowd.

Will Keane N/R

Surprise omission but helped Latics keep the ball in the final quarter.

Glen Rea N/R

Another body in the midfield for the frantic finale.

Chiedozie Ogbene 7

A good battle between him and McClean and had a good second half. Involved ever so much.

Joshua Kayode (for Ladapo 71) 6

19/2/22

Premier League

Shane Duffy 5

Burnley's Wout Wieghorst got the better of the big Republic of Ireland international, he and Sanchez had a couple of defensive mixups and some of his passing was wayward. Late on he was booked as well. A tough day at the office.

Evan Ferguson 6

Was full of zest when he came on for his Premier League debut but didn't have much time on the ball.

Nathan Collins 7

Distribution was good and once again didn't look out of place.

Shane Long (82') 7

Was only on the pitch for about ten minutes but that was certainly long enough to get on the scoresheet. With what was practically his first touch, he nodded home Livramento's cross at the far post to all-but secure three points.

Seamus Coleman 6

Solid enough defensively, but due to the threat of Kyle Walker-Peters and Elyounoussi, wasn’t able to get forward as much as he would like. Unlike last week, the Blues captain was unable to inspire his side to victory.

Matt Doherty (Emerson 83’) 6

Helped Spurs see out an important win with a disciplined cameo, including a late block to deny Bernardo Silva.

Championship

Aaron Connolly 6

The livelier of Boro's two strikers. But he was left wanting when it came to finishing.

Mark McGuinness 6

Missed his header before Ekpiteta headed home. Bit of a rocky start for the young defender but grew into the game in the second half.

Joel Bagan 7

Cannot stop him scoring at the minute! Was uncharacteristically sloppy at the start but excellent after the break. Should have had two but snatched at a half-volleyed chance.

Eiran Cashin 8 (Star Man)

A first start for the 20-year-old defender and he settled in well. Used the ball simply and sensibly, but also picked out Ebosele with a fine raking pass. Throw in some crucial pieces of defending and it was an impressive full debut.

Jason Knight 7

All action, full of running and work for the team

Festy Ebosele 7.5

Gave the visitors problems with his direct running and pace. Was brought down by Peterborough left back Hayden Coulson who was shown his second yellow card of the game and sent off 10 minutes before the break. A threat throughout the game.

Jayson Molumby 4

Worked as hard as any Albion player, but there was no quality on show when it came to picking passes. Albion just can’t score for toffee at the minute and there were one or two occasions when he ought to have tried his luck when it fell kindly for him.

Callum Robinson (for Mowatt 78) N/R

Alan Browne 6

Like many others, he grew into the game. Could have been the one to make way when Pottsy was brought off as he didn't start well at all but ended well and battled on through a knock for the last minutes.

Sean McLoughlin 7

Solid, rarely misplaced a pass or lost a header in the opening period. Will be furious about the equaliser, but like Greaves, reacted well.

John Egan 7

Commanding and his usual calm presence at the back. Won't enjoy many quieter days.

Ryan Manning 5

A few decent balls forward from the back, but the Irishman couldn't really impact the attacking play. Calm at the back but caught out for Billy Sharp's goal.

Cyrus Christie 4

A frustrating showing from the Fulham loanee after Sunday's heroics. Didn't trouble the Sheffield United defence and was caught high up a few times, which put Burns under pressure.

Michael Obafemi (for Ntcham) 6

Worked hard to give his side some kind of outlet. Pressed well but didn't get any goalmouth action.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Gave Forss very little joy all afternoon despite the striker’s opener – which he could possibly have prevented had he stayed in his original position from the corner, although it certainly was not completely his fault.

Jeff Hendrick 7 (Star Man)

Probably QPR’s best player on the day. Kept the ball moving in midfield and tried to be positive, which included some great passes into forward areas to the likes of Chair and Chris Willock. Tidy in possession and drove his team on late in the game when they were chasing a winner.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 7.5

Went into the number 10 role and looked lively on the ball and keen to impress.

Mipo Odubeko 5

Not lacking in effort but struggled to really make an impression on the game.

Ciaran Brennan 7

Came into the defence for the injured Hutchinson. Headed over from Hunt's corner after the break. Was calm and composed with the ball at his feet.

19/2/22

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7.5

A faultless performance, keeping Sunderland out with barely any chances.

Conor Coventry 8.5 (Star Man)

Continues to impress with every game. Strong, battling, fierce and integral in not only stopping Sunderland from causing much of a threat, but also beginning Dons attacks.

Troy Parrott 8

Played a key part in both goals but still searching for one himself. Had a good chance in the first half to break the drought, but a great showing in and out of possession.

Luke McNally 7

Looked a little more comfortable with the extra centre back alongside him.

Mark Sykes 7.5

Slightly unnoticed due to wing back role but a solid outing.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 9 (Star Man)

Two excellent strikes from distance which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. A decent game breaking up play also.

Good to see Coventry consistently performing well for MK Dons.
I've been critical of him, but I recall a football head telling me after an U21 game how impressed he was by that lad Coventry in the middle, so what do I know.

22/2/22

Championship

Sean McLoughlin 4

Seemed to lack confidence all evening, along with Greaves, just didn’t look at all settled.

Jordan Shipley (82, for Maatsen) 6

Worked hard when he went on.

Dara O'Shea 4

It was good seeing O’Shea getting minutes from the off again after so long, and perhaps it’ll take more minutes for him to be back to his best, though right-back wouldn’t be his favoured role. He did struggle here. Good in the air and in the tackle, but awareness and positioning was lacking as Boro cut Albion open.

Jayson Molumby 6

This was better from Molumby before he’d even bagged his first goal for the club. In truth, running and energy has never been something he’s lacked, though there he does that quality in tight areas when the midfield battle intensifies.

Aaron Connolly 6

Similar to Balogun. The ball went long once too often first half which didn't help him. No shortage of effort, but not much of a chance to shine in this one as it never really dropped for him.

Alan Browne 7

Full of pressing and aggression in the middle of the pitch and made those dangerous channel runs. Saw a low shot first half saved.

League 1

Mipo Odubeko 6.5

A lively presence off the bench. Helped give Rovers more impetus in the final third.

Gavin Bazunu 6

Gavin Bazunu was hardly tested, but had a rare poor lapse of judgement led to Leahy getting a free header, coming too far off his line as Leahy nodded in. Very little to do at all after that, good in his distribution and keen to move the ball fast when needed.

Sean Raggett 6

A brilliant clearance early on from Sean Raggett was key to deny Matthew Pennington, but he, Bazunu and Ryan Tunnicliffe could all be blamed for not dealing with Leahy from the corner. Solid barring that, moving into a back four for the second half as the Blues looked to exploit Shrewsbury's numerical disadvantage. Not his worst game, but not one of his best either.

Ronan Curtis 7 (Star man)

Ronan Curtis was Pompey's best player of the night, his crossing was largely impressive and almost all of Pompey's good moments came with Curtis involved. His first half cross led to O'Brien's equaliser, as well as creating a couple of golden chances for George Hirst, who should have done better in front of goal. Started a No.10 but he ended the night on the left wing. Involved in a post-match scuffle with Leahy, but during the game he was impressive and was the reason Vela was sent off.

Aiden O'Brien 7

O'Brien marked his first start in a Pompey shirt with his second goal for the Blues in as many games, a poacher's finish to steer former Sunderland teammate Hume's initial effort in. Quiet before his goal, he got more involved in the game after notching, showing up Tyler Walker with two goals already in very little game time. Played a deeper role after the break and was a surprise player to be taken off for Walker in the second half.

Marcus Harness 5

Pompey's top scorer was introduced off the bench at the halfway point in a bid to throw an extra attacking player into the fold, with his introduction leading to a change in shape to a 4-2-3-1. After struggling to impact the game when coming on, he ended as a right-back in a very attacking formation.

Kieran Sadlier 7

Went to the left wing-back slot but didn't have a great deal of impact from that position, as such, but was in the right place to fire home key second goal.

22/2/22

League 1

Anthony Scully 6.5

Worked hard but not his best game. Will need to show more as City fight for survival.

Luke McNally 7.5 (Star Man)

Caused problems several times by bringing the ball out from the back. Defensively sound, winning important headers and big tackles. Showcased his speed and strength by racing back to disposess Christopher Long early on.

Mark Sykes 6.5

Involved in some good stuff before the break and one excellent driven cross deserved a finish. Agyei kept him honest, particularly towards the end, but he did enough to limit his former teammate's threat.

23/2/22

Championship

Eiran Cashin 7

Composed on the ball and in his defending, hit one absolute belter of a pass out to Ebosele. Another hugely-promising performance by the young defender.

Jason Knight 6

Worked his socks of as normal, kept plugging away.

Festy Ebosele 6

Two or three strong surges in the first half without an end product. Seemed to pick up an injury late in the half. Replaced for the second half.

Sammie Szmodics 6

Played on the left which probably isn't ideal. Enjoyed a couple of promising attacking moments. Almost forced the goalkeeper into a first-half error with his pressing. Substituted late on.

Mark McGuinness 5

Almost turned home an early header to give Cardiff the lead, then followed it up with a horror tackle to pick up a yellow.

Joel Bagan 6

A quieter night for the left back - but he was due one! Up against Sorba Thomas and did well enough. Tired a bit later on.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Scored with a lovely header and his all-round performance was committed and effective but, not for the first time in recent weeks, his failure to clear his lines led to a goal.

Jeff Hendrick 7

Showed his experience and battling qualities on a tough night for Rangers.

John Egan 7

Tough first half, booked after Gallagher looked to skip away from him but came into his own in the second half with United under real pressure.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Like the rest of the defence, the captain was solid on his return to the side and made some important challenges to deny some goal bound efforts. Was rarely troubled by Sharp and his passing allowed Rovers to counter quickly. Should have commanded the area better to deny the late goal.

Premier League

Shane Long (for Adams, 82) 5

Didn't do too much when he came on as the lone striker.

26/2/22

Premier League

Matt Doherty 8

Scored his first Spurs goal and followed it up with an assist five minutes later in his best performance for the club. Should have had another but took a heavy touch and Illan Meslier rushed out to save.

Seamus Coleman 6

Set the tone with a combative challenge on De Bruyne by the touchline in the first half that had the home fans on their feet. Despite coming up against the fleet-footed Raheem Sterling, he still managed to get forward on occasions.

Championship

Darragh Lenihan 6

Lead by example and provided that stability needed in the back five this afternoon. Won a lot of tackles to ease the pressure on the Rovers defence and his passing allowed them to break on the counter multiple times.

Jimmy Dunne 8

Another fine display from the Irishman, who was the pick of the Rangers’ central defenders. Marshalled the physical threat of Gallagher well and showed good pace to deal with Blackburn’s small but mobile forwards.

Jeff Hendrick 6

Some tidy passing, including one peach of a ball to find Adomah in the box. Had a chance late in the game but was unable to get his head to Sam McCallum’s cross.

Aaron Connolly (for Siliki, 46') 6

Unlucky to have a goal disallowed but helped spark a better Boro second half.

Mark Travers 8

Was unable to keep out Tommy Smith's driven strike at the far post, but made a key flying save to stop Stoke from doubling their lead when it was 11v11. His distribution wasn't quite as precise as usual in the opening stages, with Stoke's incremental press causing problems.

But made a monstrous save at the death to once again tip the promotion balance in Bournemouth's favour.

Mark McGuinness 6

A decent enough showing from the centre back. Had a couple of hairy moments but generally did well defending his box.

James Collins 5

Missed an absolute sitter in the first half, hitting a one-on-one straight at Marek Rodak. Ran his socks off, though.

Joel Bagan (for Doughty 67) 6

A nice outing for the left back. Almost netted the equaliser with a header late on.

Alan Browne 7

Solid performance from the captain, getting back in to cover and defend when required while showing the confidence to drive forward with the ball. Set up a first-half chance for Evans and passed pretty well.

Eiran Cashin 7

Solid, calm and strong defensively. Another impressive performance by the young defender.

Jason Knight 6

Created an early chance for Kazim-Richards.

Festy Ebosele (for Bird, 66) 6

John Egan 5

Had a good chance to give United the lead in the first half with a free header that was straight at the keeper.

Conor Hourihane 4

Not as influential as in recent weeks. Delivery and passing was not as good as it has been.

Sammie Szmodics 5.5

He was busy as always, but the position behind the front two needs a good passer of the ball, one with vision. Missed a great chance to score a consolation goal.

Sean McLoughlin 7

Calm, composed and found himself in little trouble in the first period, a theme which continued into the second.

League 1

Mipo Odubeko 6

Ran the channels and gave Griffiths some much-needed support as a half time replacement for Williams.

Anthony Scully 5.5

Struggled to make an impact in the first half. A little more involved in the second after swapping sides with Maguire, but isn’t the threat he looked earlier in the season.

Kieran Sadlier 5.5

Went to left wing-back slot like against Lincoln, saw shot from the edge of the box blocked.

Gavin Bazunu 5

Gavin Bazunu has not let in three goals in many games all season, never mind in the opening 45 minutes of a match at home to a bottom half side. Good Pilkington and Biggins finishes perhaps could not be blamed on the Republic of Ireland international, but when Lane beat him from some way out on his side, he will have been frustrated not to have batted it away.

Sean Raggett 7

Sean Raggett could not remotely be blamed for Pompey being 3-0 down before the break, with all of Fleetwood's goals and the move for them coming down that side. He fought and found himself in a very competitive tussle with former Blues colleague Ellis Harrison. Caused problems when got forward and swept up at the back, summed up when he got straight back up again after finding himself shoved over the hoardings.

Marcus Harness 7

Pompey's top scorer Marcus Harness was back in the starting line-up for the first time in a fortnight, lining up as a right winger, back to the position he is best known for, even if he has not played there all that often this season. Good link up play with those around him and his creativity and reformed partnership with Tunnicliffe proved to be the source of much of Pompey's promise. Part of the bundle in the box for Curtis' croner which was given to him. At his best, his quality makes him too good to ignore, and there were flashes of it, especially in the second half.

Ronan Curtis 8 (Star man)

Curtis was the man at fault for Pilkington's opener as former Blues colleague Ellis Harrison sprinted and shurgged past him before crossing for Pilkington to convert. Tried to cause problems with his crossing but failed to really do so, although he did have the big say on the first half when converting the penalty won on the stroke of the interval, converting well from his first ever penalty in blue. That goal gave him a lift and was at the heard of everything good for much of the second half, creating multiple good chances and seeing a header off the back post clip the top of the bar. His early error quickly avenged by his excellence in the second half when his corner created Harness' bundled second. Picked up a very harsh booking in the second half that suspends him for the next two games.

Aiden O'Brien 7

Aiden O'Brien would be allowed to feel hard done by for not earning back-to-back starts after a goal on his full debut at Shrewsbury. Seconds after coming on, he did well to steer a header on goal from Tunnicliffe's cross. Became the late hero when going through clean on goal and slotting past Alex Cairns, his third goal in as many games.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Solid, strong and reliable as ever.

Conor Coventry 7

Made some uncharacteristic mistakes in the first half but recovered with an excellent and disciplined second.

Troy Parrott 8.5 (Star Man)

Took hit after hit, but kept getting up and asking for more. Great on the ball, unselfish, made great runs, dropped deep and added a body defensively too. A sensational all-round game.

Mark Sykes 8

Involved in three goals and his assist for Baldock was a peach. Cambridge found him and Williams very difficult to contain down the right.

Luke McNally 7.5

Dragged out of position for the first goal, although United should have cleared the danger after that. Solid on the ground and in the air, with one shoulder charge on Smith getting a good reception.

27/2/22

Carabao Cup Final

Caoimhin Kelleher 8 (Star Man)

Superb save early on to deny Pulisic and stopped Lukaku at near post at end of normal time. Confident with his handling and distribution.

Championship

Ryan Manning 8

The Irishman made a number of important tackles on the left side of Swansea's back three and mopped up well to recover when his side put themselves under pressure. Should have had an assist for Michael Obafemi, but a fine effort nonetheless.

Cyrus Christie 8 (Star Man)

Operating on both flanks during various stages, Christie linked up well with others in attack and was well denied by Sam Johnstone with a header in the first half. Composed to net his second Swansea goal which put the icing on the cake.

Michael Obafemi 7

Worked tirelessly and played his part in several attacks. Spurned a golden chance to score with a header before being substituted.

Dara O'Shea 3

A forgettable half for O’Shea, in general. Yes, he’s just back from injury and is not playing in his favoured position, so there is a little mitigation, but his positioning and distribution - bar one excellent cross for Robinson’s header onto the post - left a lot to be desired.

Jayson Molumby 3

The delivery of his set pieces was pretty woeful throughout. Plugged away but his deliveries and simple passes from open play were lacking the sufficient quality all too often.

Callum Robinson 5

The only player who, on the face of it, looked likely to score tonight. Hit the post twice, though he should’ve converted at least one of those chances.

1/3/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 6

Called upon for injured Mee and did okay.

Championship

Mark McGuinness 5

Cards on the table, he wasn't at his best. Gave the ball away far too often and was a little sloppy defensively.

Joel Bagan 6

Festy Ebosele had the better of him with his incredible pace. Put in a couple of nice crosses in attack, though.

Eiran Cashin 8

Impressive again. Sold defensively, won his headers and showed a calmness on the ball.

Festy Ebosele 7

His pace troubled Cardiff throughout the first half. He needed to show more composure with his end product, but he was a constant threat from the right.

Jason Knight 6

Never stopped grafting for the team.

League 1

Gavin Bazunu 6

Gavin Bazunu's wait for a clean sheet extended by another game after seeing Browne beat him on the angle within minutes of the start of the game. Had little to do for the rest of the first half but did make one good save to deny Sam Long's volley at the end of a corner in the second half.

Sean Raggett 8

Like Carter, Raggett could be held accountable for not dealing with Oxford's forward line when Browne put the visitors ahead early on. But again, like Carter, he also got his name on the scoresheet. Defended well, barring Oxford's early chance and goal and put the game level with his third goal in the space of five appearances, heading brilliantly on the end of Joe Morrell's floated cross. Helped to manage the game brilliantly late on as one of the Blues' most in form players this season

Marcus Harness 7

Marcus Harness went into the game off the back of celebrating reching ten league goals for the season for the first time in his career at the weekend. It was a slow start to the game for Pompey's top scorer this season, playing on the right of the two behind Hirst. Better when he switched sides with Aiden O'Brien, showing real quality with the directness of his run, the timing and execution of his through pass that lead to Hirst putting Pompey ahead. A quieter showing after the break and was taken off so that Pompey could shore up more, but his class shone in the move for Raggett's goal.

Aiden O'Brien 6

Aiden O'Brien is one of Pompey's top scorers in the league this season with three goals in his last three outings, with such form rewarding him with a second start since his deadline day switch. A quiet first half showing, barring some good link play. Ended the game as a left winger and from the side, created a golden chance for Hirst, with his header being saved by a top stop from Jack Stevens. Great work also at the end to carry Pompey up the pitch and keep the ball, but his goal run did end.

FA Cup

Sammie Szmodics 8

Put in a terrific shift for the team. Worked so hard defensively even though he must have suffered from twisted blood trying to keep tabs on the skills of Mahrez and Joao Cancelo. He did miss a great chance to open the scoring though.

Jack Bonham 6

Elected for flying punch to deal with corner that led to Palace second.

Tayo Adaramola 7

Always looking to push forward and help out Wilfried Zaha on the wing. Also looked to hit Jean-Philippe Mateta where possible with a long ball before being pinned back a little in the second half.

Matt Doherty 5

Threatened to follow up his first goal for the club with another, but blazed over with the goal gaping before sending a low effort wide. Faded as the game went on and offered next to nothing in the second half.

How someone who watched that match could give obafemi a 7 and Robinson, molumby 5 and 3 respectively is baffling.
