Agreed but he's 25 next week, he's not a young lad anymore! He either is or isn't a player at this stage, looks like the formerthankfully, good to see lads trying a different path

Never said he was “a young lad”. Keith fahey wasn’t 21 breaking into Ireland team but played very well for Ireland when he got his chance - he was very under rated too tbh.

Some players come from nowhere at a later age (though fahey should’ve got chance earlier from his performances in league of Ireland - haven’t seen Cullen in Holland so can’t comment on him).

From what I’ve seen tonight, I’d base our midfield around Cullen over the next few matches
I could hear him on the TV saying gimme it gimme it in tight positions. Our midfielders used run towards the opposition so they couldn’t get it.

Yeah his attitude seems spot on too.

I mentioned fahey above. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cullen playing in premier league a bit later like fahey did.

He had the balls to leave London and his comfort zone ( West Ham, Charlton ) to go to an entirely different environment and it has paid off for him big time. He needed to do that I think and he could be an important player for Ireland for the foreseeable future.

I think Cullen has a very good football brain and he is definitely an addition to the team in the role he will play. I do think he lacks in 2 areas, his general ability is not at a very high level and he seems a bit quiet. Id like to see him marshaling things more from that deep lying midfield possession.

That's your CB's job. He'll be getting all his information from whoever is behind him.

One thing I noticed was his awareness of who was around him when we were defending. He's definitely one of the first names on the team sheet now.

Cullen accepting balls in tight positions and O'Shea delivering them into those tight spots was such a delight to see.
When we could, we tried playing difficult passes and Cullen's to their 3rd goal was because he was trying to do the right thing and failed in that instance (likely tired from all the chasing).

But to see an Ireland team trying (and succeeding!) to play football was a joy.

Cullen has to start Saturday.
No question.

Then maybe give Coventry a run on Tuesday?

He definitely needs to start. We have been missing someone who is willing to come and receive balls in tight spaces.

Always impressed by Cullen since seeing him at Charlton and some WHU mates had been raving about him long before that, but was worried he might be one of those who slip through the net and don't realise their potential. Delighted that his guts in moving to Anderlecht has worked out so well for him - and us.

really happy with Cullen last night but it should be said that himself and Hendrick were caught badly last night for the second goal.  A simple return header from our goal kick and the gap between our 3 at the back and our deepest midfielders was too big.  This left a 3 v 3 which they exploited due to a great finish and poor goalkeeping but 3 v 3 is an issue even if your keeper doesn’t make an error.
AKA pedantic kunt

Something more of our up-and-coming players should consider instead of warming the bench at a Premier league or Championship club in England.

Cullen was very good. His bravery on the ball makes a huge difference to the way we play. He’s a bit stumpy, but I think he makes up for that with his stamina and intelligence.

I think last night was progress in midfield, but there is a core instability in the way we play. The energy that Browne and Molumby provide verges on the kinetic, and Molumby in particular plays at the edge of control. We still lack a specialist in midfield who can provide the energy and the craft. I don’t know where that player will come from but we are still noticeably bad at creating in the final third. You’d want Hendrick or Brady to be that player but I think we have to accept that they are not.

Solid performance but poor for the third goal in my opinion.

He made an error there, but he was punished by a superb Tadic cross and bright play by mitrovic. Doherty and Hendrick also dropped the ball a bit for the 3rd

Poor tonight I thought. I can appreciate his qualities but when I think of players filling similar roles in the past I think straight to Whelan, whi was probably twice the player that Cullen is. And whelan was hounded out of the team for years, shows how far we have fallen
