In fairness to Setters he spotted John Aldridge for EIRE selection and indirectly Raymond Houghton among other granny rulers

Did he?

Dave Langan said he told Jack there were two lads at oxford eligible and Jack got on it.

Was that it?  I thought I read somewhere that Setters scouted the land for granny rulers after Jack had written to all the league clubs and compiled a list

The one Jack told was that he went over to see Aldo asked him after the game in the players lounge did he want to play for Ireland and Aldo told him Razor was eligible as well

I was only young at the time but did Irish people know much about Maurice Setters even back in Jacks heyday. Like did he do interviews or is it just like the clips we now see on tv of him just in the background?

I met him in 1989 at a football camp in UCD.  I always knew who he was anyway.

Yes.  Thats what happened.  Whether Setters alerted JAck to Alridges availability or whether it was Langan is the question.  Houghton was just by accident.

Jack said in 1986 when he got the job he wrote to every club to post up a letter from him on the team noticeboard asking if any of them had Irish heritage and if so to contact the FAI.

So I wonder if Aldridge contacted the FAI or whether somehow Langan tipped them off is what I would like to know.

Quite possibly a mix of both scenarios but Dave said that Aldo and Ray told them they had a bit of Eire blood and he tipped off Jack.

You could be right although if he did I'd say he only told him about Aldridge as it took Jack by surprise when Aldridge told him about Houghton.

Also they they both played in Jacks first game against Wales a month or so after taking the job as far as I know so he was onto them sharpish.
