Big Jack turns 80 on May 8th.

Hope the FAI have it firmly marked in their calendar and will pay tribute to the man in some way or means.

I know his health wasn't the best in recent years. Anyone know how he is doing?

What "people?"  Led us to three tourmanents out of his first four attempts, beating England in our very 1st game at the top table, last 8 of the World Cup in 1990, beat the eventual WC runners up in 1994 and very unlucky to be denied a place at Euro 92.  Anyone who says he's not our best manager needs their head examined.  He wasn't perfect (his treatment of Dave Langan for example), some of the football was brutal (what Manager hasn't had that?) but no question he's the best and most successful gaffer we've had.

Our 3 best

1. Jack: Our most successful manager.

2. Mick: Arguably played the most attractive football. Took some big scalps.

3. Trap: Made us one of the most effective defensive units away from home with our longest unbeaten record. A phenomenal achievement.

Anyway Happy Birthday Jack

Unfortunately there's plenty of revisionists in Irish football FW. My dad has had heated arguments with his own brother and bandmate trying to defend Chalton.

'Jack was lucky, he had a great team' . What these people seem to forget is that Jack got these British lborn players to play and made us a great team.

People who say we underachieved under Charlton with the group of players we had. In my opinion it's a nonsense argument because we were a country that had never qualified for ANYTHING before and on our first go we were damed unlucky not to make the semi's of Euro88 and we made the QF of the World Cup. People also forget it was Charlton himself who brought in the very players who people claim we should have played to a higher level.  Do you think the likes of Houghton, Aldridge, Townsend etc would have declared for Ireland had it not been Charlton who asked them? Charlton had great leadership qualities, took no sh*t (proper order) but had a warmth about him too.  His style of play threw the cat amongst the pigeons in international football in the late 1980's and teams couldn't deal with our tactics which gave us the unprecidented success.  Sure we had come close in 1981 but Hand was not a inspirational figure like Charlton.   Charlton was big, gruff, not afraid to take on a star int he dressing room and a world cup winner.  That gives you the respect of the players in a way Brian Kerr couldnt get. Sure Mourinho had no real career as a player but his personality and success made him a rare exception tot he rule.

Agree 100%, the 70s and 80s where difficult times in Ireland, gufct is right about restoring pride in our flag and country. I was lucky enough to go to two world cups and one European championship with Jack at the helm. Sure we played some dour stuff but looking back they where fantastic times.

What was the story an ex Newcastle player told about training one day at Newcastle. Some bloke comes crashing through the gate and up onto the training pitch and goes "Jack Jack, there's pike in the Tyne" and Jack goes to his assistant "you take training I'll be back in a couple of days"

Great days indeed . I missed 1 friendly under jack at home in all them years .

Seen every bloody match there including Aldos first goal v Tunisa . Frank Stapleton scoring v Germany and Brady pulled off before half time .
beating Luxembourg 2-1 in 87
McGrath not getting off the bus v Turkey . The win v Spain with the og from Michel
The win v Portugal at home . The riot v England .

Sometimes the football was brutal and towards the end less effective but by god we were hard to beat ...

Sad News about Jack.....he was responsible for most of my best days supporting the team. My only quibble with him was the lack of respect he had for some of the established Irish born players Brady, Stapleton and Whelan being examples. But that was Jack, you had to take him warts and all. Hope his final years are peaceful.

Did not know he was ill until reading it here, terrible news and a terrible illness, grandfather is suffering from it now too. Both of whom got me supporting Ireland as much as I do all those years ago.

A legend of a man. Had the privilege of meeting him at his DVD signing a couple years back in the Square one evening, had plenty of time for everyone, stayed well beyond his time slot to have a good chat.

Lads he is 80 in all fairness and probably had many a bang to head. It would not be uncommon at all to be showing some signs of a form of dementia.

Obviously the comment made by a poster saying he doesn't remember the world cups etc would be very worrying but not sure how true that source is. He definitely looks like he's lost a bit of sharpness but not like he hadn't a clue where he was, he knew exactly where he was and was even going with the song every so slightly.

To quote Jack himself as above in my links

"My memory is going so I cannot do the word search like I used to – my memory is terrible, the only thing I can remember is the 1966 World Cup team.

Was thinking myself he couldn't be that bad looking at the footage of him yesterday. Seems to be fairly aware of where he was. As others have said he is 80 so probably not too surprising he's showing signs of memory loss especially when you think of the balls that they used in the 60's that he'd have been heading on a regular basis. Look what happend to Jeff Astle

It seems reports of his illness have been greatly exaggerated (thankfully). He goes into real detail about Gascoigne being eligible for Ireland, which makes me think he must be quite okay, even though he admits his memory is failing a bit.

Those are all written word interviews which could be interpreted anyway....if he was the fully aware Jack that we all remember you'd have thought he'd have been asked for a video interview to say a few words over the weekend.......but like said he's 80 yrs old we all get there eventually (those of us that do make it that far)

edit to say his brother Bobby has not looked well either for a good while now, definite case of Parkinsons if you watch him

Jack was unquestionably the best/most important manager we had. He created a zeitgeist that blew other sports out of the water. Literally everyone got involved and enjoyed 1990 in particular. Football became the national game and it can't be estimated how important this was, especially outside the cities. A lot of football folk didn't like how he basically dismantled the underage structures and cut the link between the national team and domestic game, but the results spoke for themselves.

However the end was awful. Jack seemed to be the only person who didn't realise that Anfield was the end of the road and basically forced the FAI into letting him go rather than walk out the front door when the contract was up.

Respect for the man bigtime for the job he did, but was on the wane after 1992. Refused to alter his tactics at USA94 when it was all to play for against Norway,3 points in that game would have been a fasttrack into the semi-finals. We had the players to make it but jack stifled them with his tactics.

Jack always said he would only stay as long as the fans wanted him.

He knew Anfield was the end but had seen our 'easy' draw for WC98 and went mmmmmm.

When he was summonsed to Merrion Square in Christmas week he wasnt happy as he wanted it to wait til January when it would have been ten years - his words.

I don't think you can blame the FAI on this score. We knew he was gone, they were talking about a replacement, Jack had done the tearful goodbye. I don't recall him being summonsed, my memory of that is he called the meeting in which they had to spell out that his contract would not be renewed as previously discussed. As you say, he was trying to be oblique and it didn't work out for him - there was a bit of the Clough about the whole thing.

Sad end to a great era.

New book out in time for Chrimbo. Hopefully not just peddling books for money and it's a decent read.

As one of the true legends of Irish and English football, Jack Charlton was a man both loved and feared, but now the people who have lived with him all of his life introduce the real 'Big Jack' in this brilliant authorised biography which is presented in a foreword by Jack himself For the first time Jack's wife and family, his teammates as a World Cup winner with England in 1966, and his players during his management years with Middlesborough, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle and Ireland tell their stories of the man who dominated their lives. Graeme Souness, Chris Waddle, and Peter Beardsley amongst others, are joined by Mick McCarthy, Niall Quinn and the greatest footballers who played under Jack for 10 years as Ireland team boss. This is the most personable, inviting and intimate account of Jack Charlton's life, and the book contains photographs published for the first time from Jack and Pat Charlton's personal collection. 'Jack Charlton: The Authorised Biography' is written by former Daily Mail Northern Football Correspondent, Colin Young.

Who cares?

For all it's right wing agendas, biased journalists, etc., it's one of the best papers for reporting on the LOI, often reporting on minor games in both divisions. I don't follow GAA, and have only a little interest in Rugby, but it seems to give great coverage to them too. It also employs a lot of Irish staff, much moreso than some of the other 'British' titles that sell in Ireland.

I wouldn't hold this against buying or reading a book about Jack Charlton. In fact, I look forward to you buying me a copy.

This thread prompted me to dig out my copy of http://www.adverts.ie/non-fiction/the-legend-of-jack-charlton-by-tom-humphries/209532" rel="nofollow - "The legend of Jack Charlton" written by Tom Humphries and first published in 1994, so it doesn't deal with his parting with Ireland after the failed playoff campaign for 1996. It's an excellent book with many memorable photos. Half of it deals with his time with Ireland. Some about his family's footballing dynasty; amongst others, his uncle Jackie Milburn and his brother Bobby and about his playing days with Leeds and very little about England and winning the World Cup in '66.

Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.
