Came on as a sub against Ukraine and Cyprus back in March. Only turned 16 last week.

Was the captain of the U16 Ireland team also. Very young to be heading off to Germany, but another example of the paths being taken by our most promising youngsters now that Britain has been ruled out.

Reading also re LFC and Chelsea interest in 15yo U17 international Mason Melia, I can only assume that means he has access to a British passport?

U17's finals draw on in a few hours...no easy groups at this stage of the comp but we'll know who we're up against soon...

Would assume there's a way of him moving early otherwise he wouldn't be able to move over until January 2026. Could have feeder clubs buy him once he turns 16 and work around the rules that way. The least likely way would be the family relocating to the UK and doing it that way. Doubt that would happen. Edited by J89 - 03 Apr 2023 at 3:35pm |

Don't understand why Irish kids can't move over under the age of 18, UEFA is literally breaching the common travel area entitlements of Irish citizens.
The FAI should be challenging this.

Best thing to happen to Irish football in a while. Don’t be giving the FAI any ideas ffs.

It's not breaching the CTA as nothing is stopping them from moving to the UK. They can still move to the UK if they want. Just can't transfer from a club within the EU/EEA to a non EU/EEA club per FIFA regulations which has been around awhile. Lawyer even said it would be hard to challenge this legally if FIFA were to turn down a request for an exemption. As they can just point to the rule being there pre Brexit and it's not their fault that the UK left the EU. Edited by J89 - 03 Apr 2023 at 3:58pm |

I actually think it's potentially a huge benefit for the LoI and to our club sides, so I'm not sure why we should be challenging it. However, it needs decisive action (and financing) to ensure that facilities and coaching staff for young players across the country are of the highest possible standard. We need Regional FAI Development Academies from U15 level up and we need continuous improvement of the qualification levels of coaching staff across the country. UEFA arent breaching anything, it's Britain's unilateral withdrawal from the EU which has caused the problem.

Yes and no. In the long term can be. Finally now the FAI has to pull the finger out and do something about youth football here but a team like Luton have more full time academy coaches than the LOI combined. If Moore didn't move to Germany he'd probably be training two to three times a week rather than getting full time professional training at 16. |

Agreed and given the state of the FAI finances, I wouldnt hold my breath. However, the Irish government should 100% be assisting this process also. We need to create a system whereby our best young talent doesnt lose out by not going abroad. We need the coaches and the facilities here and now, Regional Academies from U15 level up and a coherent policy on how best for the clubs involved to extract maximum value from players when they move abroad at 18.

Unfortunately they won't give two sh*ts whatsoever. FAI should be trying to get involved with UEFA for help like they've done with Israel, Northern Ireland, and others. https://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/news/027d-1716f5e62797-6dfa70126237-1000--national-academies-thriving-with-uefa-support/ Edited by J89 - 03 Apr 2023 at 4:12pm |

It's a disaster. Irish lads are missing out on 2/3 years of quality coaching and playing against some of the best young players in Europe on a regular basis. They'll arrive in the UK under-developed relative to their peers.

When the FAI go lobbying the government for finances, they should use Ferguson as the example of how the English system benefits us. He would have only been going over on October just gone. No way he would have been up to the level he is now had he have stayed with Bohs. We will not get the level of full time coaching up to the level of England as that is the best and most financed in the world but no reason we can't be much better and on par with other countries (e.g. the Croatian system) |

A UEFA B Licence course shouldnt cost more than a couple of grand and it should be grant assisted. There's a clear need to raise the standard of coaching across the country and tbh it wouldnt cost that much. I'd be fairly confident there would be enough interested parties if qualifications through to A licence level were fully grant aided. It also shouldnt be a requirement that people going for a B Licence need to be involved with a senior club.
