Cracking night this.

England are the only team to play their next game at home. They have never won a knockout game at the Euros, (bar 1 game on penalties) so if they can't beat a well organised if toothless Scotland, the optimism scale must be at 10 if they're happy to face Germany. Some have already written the Germans off. Not the wisest thing to do.

Really? Thats shocking.
So 88 out in the group, 92 out in the group by Sweden?
96 they beat Holland in the knockout and Spain on pens

What happened in Euro 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012? I remember Portugal beating them once or twice in those tournaments.

And in 2016 beaten by Iceland in the last 16

00 out in group, 04 out to Portugal in 1/4’s, 08 did not qualify, 12 out to Italy in 1/4’s, 16 out to Iceland in R16.

1984/2008: Failed to qualify.
1988/1992/2000: Group stage
2004/2012/2016: 1 knockout game
1996: Semi final after 2 wins and 3 draws in their 5 games. They beat Holland in the group stage.

Now they're "happy* to play Germany. Havertz and Hummels and Kroos and Goretzka, and Sane etc. But it's still a step up from a toothless Scotland and  Czech Republic.

Even in 68 as World Champions they lost to Yugoslavia.

Basically if they didn’t win the World Cup on home solid over 70 years ago they would be the known as the massive underachievers.

That’s one final in about 35 major competitions since 1950.

Ohh don't worry - they're still known to be very much that.

Up until 25 years ago they were more successful than France and Spain etc

Thankfully they have now won multiple competitions and can place England in the one hit wonders alongside Greece, Denmark etc

This is true. I can remember Spain being considered serial chokers on the international stage well enough. Thankfully however 25 years is a long, long time. And 55 years is pretty much another world for most people. In terms of the last two decades it's hard to think of a team that comes close to England for underperformance given their resources.

Argentina ?

Nearly 30 years since they last won the Copa.

Some great teams and players since.

Riquelme team in 2006 should have done better.

Yeah they give them a run for their money alright. Getting to the WC final in 2014 still puts them ahead of England though who haven't got past a quarter final in the last three decades.

They have certainly underperformed in the Messi era

3 RU in the Copa America has to hurt.

Nope, Hungary going to Munich and winning would have been some story

I’d rather see Portugal or France play England than Germany
They’re not great

Poor German side……
