Aiden McGeady finished up his first domestic season in the Russian Premier League on a sour note, picking up a straight red card for a late challenge on Dynamo Moscow defender Marcin Kowalczyk.

An early goal from Brazilian top scorer Welliton put the visitors ahead, but Dinamo levelled just before the end of the first half through midfielder Dmitry Khokhlov. The match ended 1-1, which suited both sides, with Dinamo guaranteed to finish in seventh.

Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady saw red in the second half after a dangerous lunge on Dinamo’s Polish defender Kowalczyk. The Moscow derby is always an intense match, and the challenge almost resulted in a brawl. Referee Alexander Kolobayev was quick to calm things down, and produced a red card to send off McGeady, meaning he’ll most likely miss the first few games of the 2011-12 Russian Premier League. It was McGeady’s second career red card, having previously been dismissed against Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League last season away to Hibernian.

A point in their last game guaranteed Spartak Moscow a place in next year’s UEFA Europa League, with fourth place qualifying for the Play-off Round. Lokomotiv Moscow, who finished fifth go into the Europa League Third Qualifying Round, while winners Zenit, and CSKA Moscow and Rubin Kazin progressing to the 2011-12 Champions League.

This was the last summer season for the RPL, as next season will begin in August 2011 and run until May 2012. Even though Aiden McGeady played just 11 league games, he finishes the season as one of the top producers, setting up numerous goals and forming a wonderful partnership with Welliton. However, with the change in scheduling, many Russian-based players may be moving on loan in January to keep fit and focused for next season.
