I did some checking, and found this entry on Philips'(the podcaster) substack account, which appears to be the source of the rumour: https://siphillipstalkschelsea.substack.com/p/sources-chelsea-eyeing-saints-stopper I thought it sounded familiar, so I searched the archive on the substack account, and found that Phillips also reported Chelsea's interest in Bazunu in October. https://siphillipstalkschelsea.substack.com/p/sources-lukaku-bazunu-and-mckennie/ So, I'd take it with a pinch of salt. It'll benefit him long-term so long as his confidence isn't badly damaged. Also have to hope that he hasn't taken a reputational knock. Before this season he was considered one of the hottest goalkeeping prospects in England and now there's probably a question mark or two over him. He needs to be superb next year.

As far as rumours go it's a very easy one for anyone to throw out too. What he said was "Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has become a popular choice in the Chelsea recruitment team, my sources tell me." Like I would expect Bazunu to be popular as the lad who signed him for Southampton and worked with him at City's academy is now co-director of recruitment and talent. And I blocked that tracker page as they talk some amount of sh*te. People think Kenny's Kids is bad but wouldn't surprise me if the lads now doing the tracker page also do the Irish Propaganda Twitter page. |

I'm not so sure. It's undoubtedly been a learning curve for him but he will be all the better for it in the medium/long term. Likelihood is he'll be a Championship goalkeeper for a year next season, which will be no harm to his development

Bazunu is struggling this season. I have said already I think he might have in hindsight made the jump a year too soon.
If anyone want context as to how soon Bazunu has made the jump into the top League in world football have a look where Kepa,Alisson,Ederson,Mendy,Fabianski,Pickford,Ramsdale, Raya,Martinez,Sanchez,Pope,Henderson etc all were at 20/21 years old in their equivalent seasons compared to how quickly Bazunu has progressed. I think we can all agree in the main most the above mentioned are proper keepers Champions League calibre keepers. My hope is Bazunu just finishes out the season as getting dropped will knock his confidence even more. Marsch like Hassenhuttl would be the sort of manager that will put faith in Bazunu.

No doubt both of those points are true, but I think its fair to say that he hasnt exactly stood out either and his stats reflect that. The particular stats above try to take into account quality of strike, expectation of saving it etc. so it's not just keepers in poor teams simply being rated poorly cos their team concedes goals. These are more sophisticated metrics designed to rate a keepers ability and he is not performing well.

Chelsea were about to bid for him on deadline day but then Antonio Conte rang Graham Potter and told him to avoid Irish players.

His stats for the season can only be viewed in the context of 1) Being the youngest starting keeper in the league by a distance (and indeed, one of the youngest ever). 2) Playing in a very poor team with a woefully porous defense. These are clearly consequential factors that any scout for a big side would be taking into consideration. Edited by The O'Shea - 13 Feb 2023 at 7:22pm |

I'm a fan of bazunu and think he will become an excellent keeper in time, but tbf to his critics on here, his stats this season dont make for great reading, no point pretending otherwise.

Are we sure it's not Crawley he's being linked with? The experts on here have assured us he's way off Premier League standard.

It's a Chelsea fan with a podcast and writes online articles that has thrown out the rumour.
Probably only coming up because the head of academy recruitment that left City last summer to join Southampton as head of senior recruitment started working with Chelsea back in October. Explains why Southampton paid a lot of money for academy players this summer. Edited by J89 - 13 Feb 2023 at 5:52pm |

I'm assuming that's meant to be £30mn although who know with Boehly? What is clear is that Chelsea are trying to buy up all the top young talent from across the continent and Bazunu certainly remains a top quality prospect even if things havent worked out as well as we all hoped this season. I'd assume it's all paper talk in any case, but it would be interesting to see if Citeh let him go to Chelsea given they will have first option. |

Mick is lucky to have the Blackpool job. He's never really cut it as a PL manager. |
