If FA are serious about getting rid of gambling then it should ban shirt sponsorship by gambling firms. 10 teams currently sponsored by gambling firms.

Very harsh on Barton

Extremely harsh. FA making an example of him to discourage it the future. He's an easy target. I would imagine he was considering retiring in the summer anyway.

I really don't get people saying it was harsh, he had bets on teams he played for to lose! Dempsey at Pats getting banned for a 20 quid treble was harsh, I think Barton was lucky not to get a lifetime ban.
And I like the guy.

He bet against his own team. Not harsh at all.
Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".

Bill O'Herlihy: Ah ye can't be saying that now Eamonn

Barton's statement

Pretty much like Shedite says the game is run by betting companies

Likewise. I can only assume the bets against his own teams were small and he somehow also had strong mitigating circumstances.

It is a very decent statement and it is hard to argue with a lot of the points he made, the bottom line is that he knew what he was doing and the rules he was breaking, especially on games involving his own team. I really do think that he actually got off lightly.

He does state he didn't play in any of games he bet on involving his own team, which of course without looking up the lineups of those matches he has listed at the bottom you'd have to take his word for it.

I definitely think it is something the FA do have to crack down on in regards to football.

Barton evens state he had a gambling addiction and nothing much was done about it from a FA perspective.

Barton’s statement also lists the 30 games he bet on that the FA’s independent regulatory commission flagged up as the most problematic, as they involved his club, although he was only actually playing in five of these fixtures. These 30 bets were made between 2006 and 2011 and resulted in only three wins and losses of more than £3,000.
