That's quite the take. Smallbone, Johnston's cameo???

Atmosphere needs to be much better on Monday

I was in 520 and there was a bit of that alright, but tbh it's a midweek friendly vs Latvia, everybody is building up to the big one on Monday so it isnt a great surprise, there were still 40000 plus there and they were treated to an entertaining game of football, we won, job done, now on to the meaningful stuff.

Good, my point is that certain people like to focus on the negatives. It was an outstanding debut and it looks like finally we might have found a midfielder who can actually play progressive football, that's a huge positive. Overall, I was pretty happy leaving the ground. I was in 520 and their first goal was just wow, one of the best goals Ive seen live in quite some time, no keeper was saving it, maybe he could have been closed down better but it flew right in to the top corner. Their second is just bad defending from us, havent seen it back to see how much blame can be apportioned to the keeper, it took a deflection obviously, but maybe he could still have kept it out, I'll reserve judgment until I see it back. Overall though, I thought we played well. Our defence was the weak link, but tbf 3 of the 5 are short on game time and one isnt a defender. We got our lead back relatively quickly in the 2nd half and saw the game out comfortably, despite a plethora of changes. Johnston's cameo was another positive. All in all, a decent performance, a win and we move on to the important stuff. Plenty of reasons to be positive in my opinion. Evan getting his goal despite not having a great game was another big plus.

Unlike in Poland, football isn't a major sport in Latvia so they won't have been too bothered about it. They're more into their basketball and ice hockey there, and they produce some decent bobsled teams as well because they have a track in the country.

Jeez there are some angry people on here.

Thought Smallbone and Ferguson were very good, enjoyed Johnston’s cameo!

An enjoyable match to watch, never in my life did I think I would say that talking about an Ireland friendly.

Also cheers to the protestors at Dublin tunnel, only managed to grab one quick pint before the match Cry

The good - when we pass the ball with pace we look quite good. The newer players looked promising. And we created a good number of chances.

Hopefully the team can put in a big effort against France and get something out of that game by any means necessary.

Desperately need some momentum to get some confidence into the team.

Hope to see Baz for Kelleher, Coleman for Doherty, Egan for Omobamadele and Cullen for Browne.  Gutted I won't be there!

Can't argue with that Smallbone and Ferguson huge bonuses.

Every bad result or performance is ultimately meaningless when you've got an endless supply of games in the future you can point to as being more important.

Just a few more days now until "these euro qualifiers are meaningless, nobody could do any better, let Kenny build for the next World Cup".

Bar the 2 goals we let in (which I’d read nothing into as kelleher wont be playing Monday), there are positives.

Ferguson and smallbone should’ve cemented places into team on Monday. O’Dowda very good too. Bazunu will be back also, etc,

Won’t read anything into result tonight, conceding 2 goals like we did might give us a much needed kick up the hole for Monday. I’m positive for Monday 👍

I admire the glass half full view, and agree that there are positives, but this is just another minnow, in a long line of minnows that we cant keep scoreless. And, another home 2-0 advantage lost to a lower ranked team.
We are also “minnows”.
This arrogant “we should be beating these” nonsense is really getting tiresome, it’s no longer 2002, which was when we last had a team capable of beating anyone with conviction .
We are on the way back up, but it will be a long slow climb.

It's both hilarious and pathetic that every time we fail to perform well or get a result against a team under Stephen Kenny, that we are now the level of the team we failed to perform or get a result against.

Luxembourg? Armenia? Bulgaria? Ukraine's 2nd XI? Latvia? Literally it never stops.

The consistent lowering of expectation to match the disgraceful results and performances of Kenny's tenure gets harder by the game, but some lads by god are sticking to it. Kenny till they die. LOL

We scored 3 goals and won. The two we conceded were a wondergoal and a deflection. It's hilarious how the "It's all about results" crowd suddenly don't care about the result when Kenny's team get one.

Not every win is the same, and the devil can be in the detail. The detail here being the oppositions ranking, the loss of a two goal lead, and the first twenty in the second half. This is the half step whereby it’s not a loss, but it ain’t a good win.

I never said it was a good win, but it is a win nonetheless where we scored 3 times and played some good football. It's meaningless in the context of playing France at the end of the day, our game plan will be completely different as our opponent will be completely different.

It’s not meaningless when it comes to being part of a pattern. The alternative is how we set up in the second half of 2022 when we just lurched to defeat, or managed to snatch victory against weaker teams. That’s relevant to how we set up against France. No point in pointing to moral victories if we lose 0-1 but never mount a meaningful attack.
