I think technically they don't have to confirm the venues until 3 months (minimum) beforehand - though some countries often do much earlier.

Greece will probably be Athens/Piraeus, but it could also be Thessaloniki or Volos (2/1 odds?)
While Netherlands play most of their games in Amsterdam, but a also proportion in Rotterdam (2/1 again?)

Flying to Amsterdam and train to Rotterdam is not a problem, but iI wouldnt be in any hurry tu book flights to Greece if possible, since both Thessaloniki (esp) and Volos are a fair way from Athens.
Greece is the only one I've pulled the trigger on so far so thanks for the confidence Smile

Gibraltar were supposed to be redeveloping their ground to take it to Uefa standards but was delayed after covid. They got an exemption for the last set of games, but have they been given the go ahead from Uefa for these qualifiers?

They may have started the work already?

We have been 4th seeds and finished in the top 2.
There are about 3 other groups were if we had of been the pot 3 team we would be fancying our chances.
The North were 5th seeds and they got a decent group.

You can't blame Kenny for the bad luck.
We don't know if playing another way would have brought us better results, could have been, could have just as easily been worse and wre could have went to pot 4. The argument is silly.

What we can debate is whether the football is good enough and we can do that during the next campaign too. Kenny was near the end of the road but he pulled the nose up on the field and that is why he is still the manager.
We will see in the next campaign on the field if Kenny is up to it.

No the point is that competitions like the Nations league are hugely important to us because there is always the possibility we get a bad draw. So every game and point counts. Yet all we had was we are Easy on the eye and building for the Euros. But the short term was that the NL was huge and we ballsed it up. The draw has made us pay for that.

From reading a few articles this afternoon whenever they go ahead with the development of the stadium it looks like it puts it out of use for 18-24 months. No idea if they've started it. They'll probably end up looking for uefa exemptions again then if not.

Won't look at booking that for a long time yet anyway

Greece away will be their first home qualifier. Doubt they'll move it outside Athens and in the last qualifiers they used the Olympic Stadium for all bar one even though their was restrictions on attendances. Home game against Georgia in March they played in Thessaloniki and had a home game against Honduras in a friendly before it.

While the NL is important, a bit of perspective is required here, the team absolutely needed a complete rebuild, it simply had to be done, young lads had to be introduced, senior lads dispensed with. There is no ideal time to schedule a rebuild in international football, but obviously the NL is preferrable to an actual campaign. The draw was unlucky, we had an 80% chance of avoiding Fra/Eng and an 80% chance of avoiding Tur/Gre, we managed to avoid neither, that's bad luck. We now have a young team which is only going to improve as they gain experience - I think only 3 players had 25 caps or more in the last starting XI, 7 were 23 or under - this is the background to our last two underwhelming NL campaigns, campaigns I might add where we finished exactly where our seeding suggested we would i.e. 3rd of 4. Thats not to excuse poor performances therein and yes it would be great if we had gotten better results along the way, but context is still important.

Btw, being 2nd seeds would have guaranteed nothing, we have been second seeds or better on three occasions in the last 10 WCQ/ECQ campaigns - Euro 2004 1st seeds, WC 2006 2nd Seeds, Euro 2016 2nd seeds - We finished 3rd, 4th and 3rd respectively in those 3 campaigns. We have finished Top 2 in qualification groups only 3 times in the last 10 attempts (20 years), each time was from a seeding position of 3rd or worse. We have qualified for just 2 of the last 10 major tournaments. Some people seem to have a very elevated opinion of the abilities of the Irish team - we have been pretty much in gradual decline since 2002, hopefully 2021 represented the end of that cycle and we can now start to improve again - we are certainly in a much better place now imo than we were at the end of Mick II's campaign - it has taken longer than we would all like, but Kenny's been at it 2 odd years and there are significant green shoots emerging. The draw was a kick in the teeth.

We have attempted to qualify for 10 major tournaments since 2002 and have managed to do so twice, Euro 2012 (where we finished 2nd in our group despite being 3rd seeds) and Euro 2016 (where we finished 3rd in our group despite being 2nd seeds). Our other attempts are listed hereunder

EURO 2004 - Seeded First - 3rd in Group
EURO 2008 - Seeded Fourth - 3rd in Group
EURO 2012 - Seeded Third - 2nd in Group
EURO 2016 - Seeded Second - 3rd in Group
EURO 2020 - Seeded Third - 3rd in Group
EURO 2024 - Seeded Third - ???????????

WC 2006 - Seeded Second - 4th in Group
WC 2010 - Seeded Third - 2nd in Group
WC 2014 - Seeded Third - 4th in Group
WC 2018 - Seeded Fourth - 2nd in Group
WC 2022 - Seeded Third - 3rd in Group

In ten attempts since 2002, we have finished Top 2 in our Qualifying Group just 3 times (30%)

We have outperformed our seeding on 4 occasions (40%)
We have underperformed our seeding on 4 occasions (40%)
We have matched our seeding twice (20%)

2004 top seeds - hard to imagine now!

And we sacked the manager who got us to that position two games into the campaign.

A bit of perspective also the euros draw was the unknown and should be more difficult owing to our 3 seed rank.

We knew our best opportunity to ensure a playoff at worst was the nations league.

As for a rebuild I’m pretty sure most of the players used in the nation’s league were similar through out the whole campaign.

And if anything it was his refusal to start arguable our best player in the nations league in obafemi in the first two games cost us dearly

Look you can quibble away about individual performances and team selections etc. The opening two results were poor, no doubt. Obafemi had 20 plus minutes in both games to make an impact. Regardless, Scotland and Ukraine came into the campaign higher ranked than us and their players play at a higher level than ours, they finished ahead of us. We performed well in 3 of the 4 games against them which bodes well for the future. The result in Armenia was poor and shouldnt have happened, we had enough of the ball and the chances to win that game, but it highlighted the major deficiencies in the team, a lack of creativity in midfield and a lack of experience up front. These are still issues and there's no magic fix available. Obafemi (if he stays fit and can start 2 games in a window) looks like he might be the answer to one of the issues - there are still serious question marks over his partner up front and the two in midfield to compliment Cullen.

Even if we had of beat Armenia away (the big stinker of the campaign), we still would have only finished 3rd and on 10 points.

Ukraine at home you could also argue was another stinker because they had a second string. Well having watched them in the flesh, their second string were good technical players. We didn't perform as well as we could but even if we did, it wouldn't have guaranteed a win.

Scotland away we gave it a good go and could have gone either way. They just have a few better players than us in key areas.

I think the issue for many of the Kenny haters is they still hold onto aspirations that the team should be regularly beating teams like Scotland, Ukraine and now Greece and then giving it a go against the top tier sides, whereas our actual standing is not so high and more so we are in and among those mid-tier sides and more towards the bottom half.

You haven't lowered your bar to what is the reality based on the level our players play at.

I will be probably still go to all the games but I think the outcome of this group is fairly obvious and we will be in a battle with Greece for third. We do have the nations league route for a play-off though and from looking at the permutations it is possible so we have some hope there Thumbs Up

Yes, we do look like to get a play off imo. We will probably be pushed up to Nations League A playoff also, against any Nations League A team that fails to qualify (doesn't look likely there will be any - Austria, Wales or Czech Republic looking like the only possible ones to not qualify directly), plus Latvia from Nations League D, and one or two other Nations League B teams (Slovenia/Albania).

Awful draw, but all the games will be must-see.

The big question for the November games is should / will Kenny try new prospects in mid-field and wing-back, and will he try Ogbene up front with Obafemi?
By the way has Ogbene played wing-back at club level in the past?

As to posters on here re-writing history to say Kenny should have done x y and z it's time to move on.

I thought it was 70/30 for us to get a play-off spot prior to the draw, looking at it now post-draw it's now at best 50-50 imo. 3 or 4 of the better teams seeded below us have got decent draws and will fancy their chances - if more than 2 of them make it, we are gone. Some of the groups look very open indeed.

Ogbene was used primarily as a RWB by Rotherham for pretty much all of last season. He has only begun to be utilised as a striker regularly this season, possibly as a result of his performances in a green shirt.

I dont think we'll see wholesale changes in November, but I would expect Smallbone to be bumped up at a minimum and Manning deserves another chance based on current form. Omabamidele ruled out by injury last time and Idah when fit again are two others who will be in the squad. Connolly would have a right chance if he could get some game time - he was excellent for the U21s and looked a cut above that level, but I think he may have picked up an injury in the 2nd game. I think most of us could name at least 20 of the 25 man squad for France at this stage. Let's hope there is a springer or two in the meantime - it would be nice if one of our forward options actually went on a sustained run of scoring regularly, that would help a lot.

Still no word on Parrott's injury but with it being a hamstring injury it's safe to assume we won't be seeing him in November. So Kenny will have to find a new partner for Obafemi.

Obafemi and Ogbene, we might as well see if they can gel together during the friendlies. Similar think Keane and Obafemi should get a run together as well. In front two with Obafemi I'd say he'll perform better than being the CF in a 3-4-3.

At Wigan he normally plays as the AM in a 4-2-3-1 and even when they go 3 at the back he's sometimes plays behind two strikers in a 3-4-1-2. Still no word on Robinson's injury but should be alright hopefully. *touch wood*
