I'd say Knight is more likely to move to Burnley than get a move to a PL team. Can see zero Irish players playing in the PL more often than not next season given Coleman and Duffy's foibles and the likelihood of Spurs signing someone to supplant Doherty.

Assuming Travers gets the nod and maintains his form next season, Doherty getting a move is probably the best/only chance of an Irish outfield player featuring regularly next season.

Very few other positives to pick, in the premier league we've only seen Kevin Long get a very rare starting, Shane Long came on for a 90th minute cameo. That's with 14 teams played today.

Championship sees Christie and Obafemi doing very well.
Festy, Cashin and Knight starting in a Derby win a highlight.

Long is the 14th Irish player to play in the Premier League this season. Still on course for the lowest number of Irish players ever, the previous worst was 15 a few years ago. Hard to see where we might get another from this season to match that - Adaramola or Okoflex might get a run out in a dead rubber game at the end of the season maybe. 7 of the 14 Irish players have played 5 games or fewer.

Looking at next season, from those 14 we're likely to lose Idah and Omobamidele to relegation with Norwich as well as Collins and Kevin Long to relegation with Burnley. It's probably Shane Long's last season in the league as well and Hendrick and Clark have already been removed from Newcastle's 25 man squad. So that would leave 7, which includes the likes of Aaron Connolly, Evan Ferguson and Will Smallbone who could all go out on loan. That would just leave Coleman, Duffy, Doherty and Kelleher (doesn't sound like he'll be going on loan).

Then looking at the Championship if the current top three are promoted the only Irish player likely to feature in the Premier League from those three next season would be Travers, and even that's not a guarantee - they will sign another keeper in the summer to compete with him.

Other than that someone might sign Knight at that level or Bazunu might get a top flight loan - but probably more likely to be Championship for him.

So while we're seeing plenty of players breaking through in the Championship and League 1 the Premier League situation is likely to get worse before it gets better.

1/4/22

Championship

Sean McLoughlin 6

Good in the first period, just kept it simple. Headed and kicked it.

2/4/22

Premier League

Kevin Long 5

Difficult game to come in for and could have blocked second.

Championship

Mark Travers 9

The proximity of Rob Atkinson's fourth-minute header (plus the speed) meant it was always going to be difficult for Travers to get a strong enough hand to claw the effort out. His save in the second half was incredible. Legs akimbo and diving the other way, his penchant for making huge saves at huge moments within a game was completely underlined here.

Travers also cleaned up untidy passes from team mates around him well and displayed his continued improvements with the ball at his feet, both in his composure and overall distribution.

Mark McGuinness 4

Largely did alright until the game opened up and then things got a bit stretched. Still part of a defence which conceded four, though.

Joel Bagan 3

Just reverted to the Bagan of old, a little. Was a little cautious and nervous up against Cyrus Christie and opted to turn back to his own goal too many times. Swans found a lot of joy down his side.

Cyrus Christie 9

Caused problems on the right flank and was more than happy to cut inside to offer a greater threat. Made his fair share of tackles too to limit Cardiff attacks and got the assist for Hannes Wolf late on.

Michael Obafemi 9 (Star Man)

Inches away from scoring after 24 seconds but made no mistake from close range just minutes later. Always a willing runner and linked up play nicely too. Wonderfully composed finish late on to cap off a stunning win.

Eiran Cashin 7

Another wholehearted solid display by the young defender.

Jason Knight 7

Drove forward on occasions in the opening 45 minutes. Full of energy and determination in a central-midfield role.

Festy Ebosele 5

Playing from the left, he threatened to get the better of his marker on two or three occasions but could not deliver that final cross or pass. That end product needs to be more clinical.

Joe Rafferty 5

Coped fairly well with Ebosele in the first half and stuck to his task. Didn't use the ball very well in the second half and the ball rocketed past him for the goal, when he was on the line.

Alan Browne 5

His passing was off in the first-half and stitched Lindsay up with a poor backwards header that resulted in the red card seconds later. Off the ball, his work in the second half was strong. Browne was often the man there to intercept or cut a move out when Derby threatened.

Sean Maguire 5

Wasn't able to provide that focal point after coming on, but not for a lack of trying. The service up to him was poor.

Jack Taylor 5

One excellent long pass in the first-half was an exception rather than a rule and the midfielder was taken off at 2-0 after failing to make an impact on the game.

Sammie Szmodics 5

Worked hard as usual, but missed a good chance to equalise before the break. Many poor moments in possession.

Aaron Connolly 6

Grafted like mad up top for Boro. He never stopped running and caused a nuisance of himself as he pressured Posh defenders. Really unlucky with one headed first-half chance while he should have at least had an assist when he teed up Balogun after excellently chasing down what looked a lost cause and winning the ball in the opposition box. Unlucky to have nothing to show for that.

Jack Bonham 6

Claimed crosses when needed to secure back-to-back wins and clean sheets.

John Egan 5

Up against Maja, who had Stoke's best chance at 0-0 when he slotted wide from close range when he should have found the net. Other than that, the United man got the better of the battle. Played a lovely ball over the top from his own half to release Norrington-Davies down the left. Unlucky to see Tymon's cross deflect off him into the net.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 6.5

Remained in the team but moved to left wing-back to cover the absent Declan John. Struggled in early stages but grew in influence as the game progressed.

Anthony Scully 8

A lively display down the left flank and combined well with Robson. Took his goal superbly.

Mipo Odubeko 5

Replaced Clayton for the final quarter of the game and offered a lively presence, holding it up and having an effort cleared off the line.

19/3/22

League 1

Warren O'Hora 8 (Star Man)

A cool finish when Dons needed one. Defended solidly as ever, and got the decisive goal to win it.

Conor Coventry 6.5

Was barely given a second to think while on the ball.

Troy Parrott 6

Battered and bruised after a relentless outing with little to no reward. He wasn't alone in that though.

Luke McNally 8 (Star Man)

Sometimes caught on the ball but his goal could prove crucial.

Mark Sykes 7

Industrious first half but faded a little in the second period.

Scottish Premiership

Aaron McEneff 7

Didn’t have the kind of impact he had from the bench against St Mirren but his willingness to move inside from the flank often kept Hearts in possession by picking up second and loose balls.

20/3/22

FA Cup

Seamus Coleman 5

Started where he left off against Newcastle United with some marauding runs as a right wing-back but the early promise faded with the quality of his deliveries dropping in the second half.

Shane Long 5

As usual, he worked hard up front, delivering the high pressing Ralph Hasenhuttl wanted against City. But things didn't quite fall for him in front of goal as he got the ball stuck under his feet early on and he saw a header go wide.

Premier League

Matt Doherty 7

Won the ball in the build-up to the own goal but cheaply conceded the corner which allowed West Ham back into the match. A threat at the far post, and linked up well with Kulusevski and Kane.

Championship

Kieren Westwood 7

A very decent performance on his debut, despite the result. Blameless for all three Posh goals, Westwood produced a good save in the build-up to the first and prevented a late fourth with another good stop.

Jimmy Dunne 5

Also struggled. Beaten with alarming ease at times and his silly foul to give a penalty away handed Peterborough the initiative.

Jeff Hendrick 6

Didn’t offer much after coming on in the second half.

Jack Taylor 6

His mistake enabled QPR to take the lead and he almost repeated the error 10 minutes later. Settled down to play okay, but his substitution for Fuchs was inevitable as Posh looked to close the game down.

Sammie Szmodics 8

A wonderfully industrious effort from the forward who struck the bar with a fine effort in the first-half. Never stopped running for 100 minutes. He pressed well and harrassed QPR into mistakes. Should have squared to Joe Taylor for a tap-in in the final moments, but a minor quibble.

19/3/22

FA Cup

Aaron Connolly 6

Worked really hard in the first half and displayed some neat touches and runs in behind.

Championship

Eiran Cashin 6

Caught out by a clever one-two between Godden and O'Hare on Coventry's goal in the first half.

Festy Ebosele (for Cashin, 61) 7

Added his power and pace when he came on.

Jordan Shipley 5

Almost beat Allsop to the ball, being more aware than the Derby defence. Corners hitting the first man. Replaced by Gyokeres.

John Egan 5

Beaten far too easily with a ball over the top that Foderingham did well to race off his line and collect with Morris looking to profit. Then sold himself easily when he dived in on the striker inside the area. Way below his level in the first half but was much better in the second.

Conor Hourihane 6

Put the ball on a plate for Berge to slide home the opener and put United in front at a crucial stage in the match where Barnsley were looking to get on top.

Callum Robinson 5

Gave the ball away on a couple of occasions, struggled to get up front during the first half, tried to break down Bristol’s defence but struggled.

Mark Travers 7

Travers was busier with his feet than with his hands. He made 28 passes by the 75th-minute mark - more than five Huddersfield outfield starters. He did his day job well, making two good saves in the first quarter of an hour and continuing to be the unflappable figure he's been throughout this season.

Sean McLoughlin 5

In a half where his side weren’t great, he was a positive in his desire to get to the ball first. Probably the best of a bad bunch.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Was comfortable in the right-back spot and dealt well with the pace of Ince and Ejaria, as well as the aerial presence of Joao. Should have closed Laurent down quicker for the goal but even so, no one expected him to score from there.

Jack Bonham 8

Claimed crosses comfortably in first half and a fine penalty save in second.

Cyrus Christie 6

Needed more support in attacking areas at times but caused a few problems, most notably when picking out Joel Piroe.

Michael Obafemi 6

The striker didn't see much of the ball in dangerous areas. Slipped when attempting to latch on to a through ball late on in what was a rare opening.

Scott Hogan 7.5

Forced a couple of errors out of Fisher with his pressing and you wish a couple of Blues' first half chances had fallen to him. Flashed one header across goal in the second period and another which forced Fisher into a diving save. Held up the ball as well as he has done for a long time and overall worked hard.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 7

Replaced the injured Marlon Fossey at right wing-back. Looked one of Bolton's better players in the first half, but final ball was lacking for the most part, but put in free-kick which hit post and led to late winner.

Gavin Bazunu 8 (Star man)

The standout for Pompey, and by some distance, was goalkeeper and Manchester City loanee Gavin Bazunu, making three massive saves to keep Pompey in it. The first two were excellent, getting one v one situations spot on when denying Anis Mehmeti and Sam Vokes either side of the break. He later stopped a close range free-kick from Lewis Wing, who Pompey wanted to sign in January and without his heroics, it would have been back-to-back defeats for the Blues.

Sean Raggett 7

A solid display from Sean Raggett, who like most of Pompey's defensive line did what they had to when Wycombe got forward. In clearances and blocks, he was spot on, but his passing was either brilliant or poor. A second half booking for a foul on Vokes would have got him a ban before today, but he has managed to escape punishment.

Marcus Harness 6

After a two week and three-match absence due to suspension, Marcus Harness was straight back in the starting side in place of Ronan Curtis. In what was a very flat first half performance, Harness was probably one of the few outfield players that could come out of it with any level of credit. His running and agility asked questions of Wycombe's strong rearguard. Less creativity after the break and was taken off with just over ten minutes to go.

Ronan Curtis N/R

Ronan Curtis has not been in the best of form in recently, being bought into the fray with around ten minutes to spare in place of Harness. Had the best shot of the game late on, as well as a cross to win a last-gasp corner. Signs of the sparks that had been lacking for large parts.

16/3/22

Championship

Peter Kioso 9

Started on the right of the back three, then moved into the centre but didn’t let it faze him as he gave a powerhouse performance, particularly aerially. Thought he had a first Luton goal, but it was Onyedinma's, almost on target twice after the break too.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Worked hard against a decent forward line that gave the defence little respite. Won his headers and although guilty of sometimes rushing his clearances, it was another solid performance from the Irishman.

Jeff Hendrick 6

Some good touches after coming on in the second half but unable to make any real impression in an attacking sense.

Sammie Szmodics 7

Worked his way into the game slowly, but was excellent in the second-half until he was taken off to protect a groin niggle. Took his goal well and a small part in the second goal.

Jack Taylor (Szmodics 68) 5

Game passed him by.

17/3/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman 8

Determined St Patrick’s Day display from the captain who was forced into making a couple of superb last-ditch tackles to deny Ryan Fraser in a single attacking sequence in the first half.

15/3/22

Championship

Scott Hogan 5 (for Mengi, 32)

Made a few runs, the ball didn't come.

Aaron Connolly 7

Battled away up top all night, working really hard. Unlikely to be credited with the first goal, but nevertheless, the timing and intelligence of his run created the opening.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Was calm and assured in a much more dominant display in the second half. Failed to organise his fellow defenders during the first half but performed as the leader Rovers know in the second half and really got the Ewood Park crowd going in an important night for his side.

Eiran Cashin 6

A nervy moment in the opening minutes but soon settled and was solid for the rest of the first half but found it more of a test in the second half.

Jason Knight 6

Full of running in the first half, pressed Rovers and got forward when he could. Not as involved in the second half and replaced after 73 minutes.

Festy Ebosele (for Buchanan, 81) 5

Mark Travers 7

Had a few efforts to deal with but, aside from smothering Lucas Joao's effort early on, all the rest were shots you'd expect a keeper of Travers' stature to save. It seems like we say it every time he concedes, but the Irishman could do very little about the goal.

Callum Robinson 8

Robinson worked tirelessly alongside Grant in attack and provided the winning goal with a composed finish. The forward deserved the standing ovation he received when he was replaced by Carroll in the closing stages.

League 1

Gavin Bazunu 7

After earning a well-deserved clean sheet away at Ipswich Town on Saturday, it was another solid display from the Manchester City loanee. Made some good saves, including an important stop to deny Luke Jephcott before half-time. Met crosses really well and had good positioning throughout, although he did spill two long-shots before smothering on both occasions. Little he could do about the goal and even came up for a late corner.

Sean Raggett 7

Not a lot Sean Raggett could be blamed for in the defeat. Hardly put a foot wrong in his latest opportunity to captain Cowley's side. Won a lot in the air, made numerous good blocks and was thrown into attack a late on, unable to pounce at the opportunty when Hirst's second half chance was blocked.

Ronan Curtis 5

Many of Pompey's better chances came the way of Ronan Curtis, but on every occasion, he tried doing too much. Picked the wrong option in the second half when he should have squared to Aiden O'Brien, getting caught out. The chances he did have, he wasted, turning two wide in the second half and firing a curled effort off the bar. Tried to press, but on the ball, failed to be the creative spark needed.

Aiden O’Brien 5

Former Sunderland and Millwall forward O'Brien did not a lot in the game, floating between a striker and creative midfield role. One of those taken off shortly after the goal, but certainly not a performance to remember for a man, whose instant goals have slowly started to disappear.

Anthony Scully 5

Playing in behind the front two, couldn’t get into the game. Taken off with 20 minutes left.

16/3/22

Premier League

Shane Duffy 6

Won most of his aerial duels but was lucky that his misplaced header back to Sanchez was not punished by Dejan Kulusevski in the first half. It's not his fault, but Brighton miss Adam Webster's driving forward runs from defence.

Matt Doherty 5

Got in some threatening positions at the back post but couldn’t make any count. Quiet in possession.

Championship

John Egan 6

Up against Madine and not an easy job. The striker did have a couple of headers from crosses that were comfortable for Foderingham but Egan handled his threat well. Much improved from Saturday.

Conor Hourihane (Ndiaye, 70) 5

Mark McGuinness 7

Another aerially dominant display from the centre back. Coasted through another game without too much trouble.

Joel Bagan 8

Looks such a different player to the one we saw at the start of the season. So confident. Should have had one of his own but hit the bar, then played in Doyle for his.

Jack Bonham 6

Finger-tip save to stop Bagan effort in first-half and did well to block Isaak Davies effort.

Sean McLoughlin 8

What we’ve come to expect from the Irishman, calm and composed. Another solid display where he barely appeared to break a sweat.

Alan Browne 4

The captain kept going until the end but he and his team-mates lost the midfield battle for good. Naive at times and struggled to have any impact after the first five minutes.

Cyrus Christie 7

Given licence to get further forwards, Christie caused plenty of problems on the right and was a rock defensively. Hit the post with a header before Michael Obafemi's second.

Michael Obafemi 8 (Star Man)

Had two big chances in the first-half before scoring from an acute angle to put the Swans ahead. Tapped home a second to equalise before being subbed. Top display.

12/3/22

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7.5

In a game where defences were on top, O'Hora was in good form again, limiting the visitors to very few actual chances.

Conor Coventry 7

Had to battle to get on the ball in the midfield battle. Wasn't afforded as much time on the ball as in recent weeks but still played a few cracking balls towards the forwards.

Troy Parrott 6

Couldn't back up his midweek brace with more goals, and barely got a sniff in a game of few chances.

Luke McNally 7.5

Faced a real battle against Udoh and stood up to the challenge, making some crucial tackles. One gorgeous piece of skill in the first half and his run set up Brannagan's offside goal. Some big headers late on

Mark Sykes 6

The hosts spotted his threat early on and stopped him having much of an impact. Worked hard up and down the right wing, but the end product was a bit off.

Scottish Cup

Aaron McEneff (for Woodburn 66), 7
Joe Shaughnessy 6
Charles Dunne 6
Connor Ronan 7
Alan Power 6
Ryan Sweeney 6

13/3/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman 6

Got forward with good effect in the first half to carve out some dangerous crosses but found himself more on the back foot after the break as the hosts fell behind and he reverted to his usual right-back role.

Will Smallbone 5

Nice to see him back on the pitch. Playing in a more advanced role he didn't have a huge impact though. Subbed at half time.

Championship

Jimmy Dunne 7

Had a real physical tustle with Jerome and although the 35-year-old front man had his moments against the big Irish defender, Dunne stuck to his task well both on the ground and in the air.

Jeff Hendrick 5

Another underwhelming display from the Irish international, who struggled against Luton’s aggressive midfield. Lucky to see a Hatters goal chalked off for offside in the first half after being caught in possession. Withdrawn in the second half for Luke Amos and Rangers looked better for it.

Gemerally a very disappointing day for the Irish players, very little to get excited about. The future is bright but for the moment, we are making do with average enough players who arent performing at a consistently high enough level each week

Parrott and Coventry are playing well, albeit in the 3rd tier.

Festy has a few poor games but on average is an asset for Derby.
Knight's light has faded but I'd say he's bollixed and his qualities will persist.

Mattie's getting regular starts in the PL, which looked beyond him not so long ago.

The issue, in the main, is we are looking for very young players to be making an influence on games, as we have a missing generation of almost anyone over their mid-20's playing regularly at any decent level.

If you averaged Robinson's score from the player ratings over the course of the season I'd say he's something like a 4.5.

He's always going to be starting or coming off the bench for us but it's through necessity rather than any kind of sustained form or merit.

Obafemi should be in the squad all day and, if we're honest, he probably has as much of a case to start as anyone else.

If you don't think he fits, find a way to make him fit.

11/3/22

Championship

Callum Robinson 3

Had pretty much zero impact on Albion’s fortunes in the final third. There is a lack of creativity in the Albion midfield department, granted, but Robinson has to do more to affect games when in possession - and when pressing without it. It wasn’t evident in any form at all here - not until the final five minutes at least.

12/3/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 6

Continued in the absence of Mee and defended well in the main before being sent off late on.

Matt Doherty 6

Got up well in support of Kulusevski to help Spurs overload on that side. But could not stop Sancho’s influence.

Championship

Sean McLoughlin 6

Took a cross straight into the face when blocking a cross, saw his name in lights in the second when his goalbound effort was blocked.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Had an unbelievable chance to give the home side the lead early on, but was denied by an excellent save by Bentley. Was allowed to push higher up the pitch as the game got slightly more stretched but did his defensive duties well alongside the back three.

Cyrus Christie 5

Given the formation tweak compared to what he's typically operated in, Christie wasn't overly threatening in attack in the first-half. Solid defensively though, and caused more problems after the restart, having Swansea's best chance late on.

Michael Obafemi 5

Worked hard in an attempt to cause problems, but, in truth, the forward had nothing to work with for long spells.

Mark Travers 7

Dealt well with shots at his far post and made a sharp save to his right, getting down quickly to get a strong wrist to the shot. Struggling to think of an occasion or a goal he could have done better with this season.

Eiran Cashin 7.5

Strong defensively again, barely put a foot wrong in the first half. One piece of excellent, timely defending in the first half prevented Derby falling behind.

Festy Ebosele (for Bielik, 66) 6

Jason Knight (for Ebiowei, 76) 6

Mark McGuinness 7

Fed well off Flint to mop up when needed. Reasonably solid outing, but perhaps a little lucky not to give away a penalty.

Joel Bagan (on for Doughty '81) N/A

Alan Browne 6

Had his moments in the game, making runs forward and winning his 50-50s. Tried to provide that killer pass through a couple of times but couldn't find a way. Came off with a groin issue at the end.

Joe Rafferty 5

Introduced in injury time.

John Egan 7

Stood up well in the first half when Connolly was running at him and would have got in behind had he not read the tackle. Then picked out Robinson for the third with a back-post header that was slotted home by his defensive team-mate.

Hourihane (Fleck, 38) 6

Aaron Connolly 5

Really difficult afternoon for both strikers as Boro struggled to service them much. Connolly did plenty of running but struggled to get into the game.

Jack Taylor 6

It's a surprise to see Taylor playing in a deeper role than Fuchs, but he was disciplined without affecting the play too much.

Jack Bonham 5

Heart in mouth when he spilled routine cross in second-half.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 7

Went to number 10 role after coming on and looked bright as he makes a case for a start to come his way.

Mipo Odubeko 3

Offered very little again in terms of contesting for the ball, his off the ball runs and general goal threat. In his defence he could argue he was feeding on scraps.

Gavin Bazunu 8

Republic of Ireland's first-choice goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu will have been keen to make up for his stoppage time clanger at Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night, although it had no major affect on the result. Made one great stop to keep out Kayden Jackson at the end of the first half, with Jackson pulling up injured after his shot was saved. Made two further top saves in the second in a clean sheet that was both hard-earned and deserved. His best performance for a while.

Sean Raggett 8

Not a game for attacking and expansive football, Pompey had to defend and they made a really good job of it. Sean Raggett, more recognised for his goals in recent times, exceptional when defending. Kicked, headed and got in the way of everything he needed to. Pompey have not kept clean sheets all that much recently, after being denied of an easy one at Crewe, they got just rewards for their work.

Ronan Curtis 6

An indifferent game of sorts for Ronan Curtis, who showed flashes of creativity, showing good skill to set up first half chances for O'Brien and then Hirst. Some of his touches lacked a little quality as he often tried to do too much on the ball before getting dispossesed. Barring one created chance in the second half with another fizzing cross, Curtis had to graft, press and feed off scraps. Not his ideal game, but not a bad showing.

Aiden O'Brien 6

As per Cowley's rotation policy, former Millwall and Sunderland forward Aiden O'Brien was back in the side, replacing the perhaps unlucky Tyler Walker in the team. Had two chances of sorts in the first half, although the first hit him on the end of good work from Curtis. He then intercepted the ball high up the pitch moments later, but snapped at the chance too soon and steered wide. Found himself on a great counter attack run later on, but his pace let him down as he bared on goal. Quiet in the second half but again grafted, would benefit more in games where Pompey have better control and can create attacking moves.

Not too many standout showings apart from the two keepers, although McNamara was apparently very good again for Millwall.

Was a stand out in League 1 - Peterborough thought they'd get a couple of million for him at that stage if they sold him. Similar to the whole Peterborough squad, and Conor Coventry while he was there, the Championship has been a struggle and they look set to go down again. Whether he has done enough that another Championship team might take a punt on him as a cheap option I don't know, he would probably do much better in a better team, but after how the season has gone he may well end up back in League 1 with Peterborough.

If you were a Championship team looking for a free/cheap midfielder from League 1 for next season you'd probably go for Mark Sykes over Jack Taylor at the moment.

Has he stood out or something?

Yes, Kenny called up him up to the squad in November to replace Molumby so obviously has stood out. Been plagued with his usual hamstring problems since January from what I can take.

from what ive seen over the course of the year seems like he was playing every week when healthy, dont think hes had as much success as last year in league one when they got promoted but peterborough have scored 25 and conceded 70 through 35 matches so i doubt anyone would look good in that team
