Johnston, Ogbene, Ferguson, Szmodics. On individual merits, all players to be excited about. I'd have questions about how you'd fit some of them in the same team with their attributes without things looking disjointed and weakening the collective.
The last dozen odd performances would make you really miss Duff and McGeady on either wing with Keane and Doyle up front. It's just such a mess at the moment and nobody is on the same wavelength. Lads like Johnston and Ogbene making nice runs, beating players and doing things well individually. Ferguson showing deep for the ball and having the odd glimmer of good link-up play. Szmodics comfortable on the turn with his back to the ball and can pick a pass. But there's just nothing to thread it together. And O'Shea is clearly not going to be the person to find out how to make everything more cohesive.

He was my MOTM last night. Sprayed some lovely passes around that seemed to go unnoticed by people with eyes in their heads. As I said earlier he was deployed on the left and then on the right and then back to the left again. Playing him centrally will get more out of him. Right now that would mean potentially dropping Ferguson which being honest wouldn't be undeserved. Or play Szmodics as an advanced central midfielder.

I wonder what Kenny's issue with him was because he's certainly talented enough and he's been saying all the right things in the media.

There is definitely a feeling of "why did it take this long for him to play for us". He has had his passport for 3 years now I think. I know there was some issues with injuries and personal but seems like they were kind of isolated, according to Sammi they have been waiting on this for years now.
He has been playing good stuff in L1 and Championship in that time.

He played two good cross field passes and linked up well with Coleman twice. Coleman was offside by about 2 days for one of his better passes, unfortunately. He's wasted in wide areas. Put on the right to accommodate Johnston, which was a poor decision.

That's the obvious solution to fit him but be don't have competent conventional fullbacks so would likely weaken us as a team generally.

He had a fairly poor spell at Bristol City so wasn't exactly demanding a call up til he found form last year. Maybe Kenny could have called him up in the summer, but he didn't wait too long beyond when he merited being in the squad and unfortunately Sammie pulled out. He wasn't a glaring omission for most of Kenny's rein anyway just unfortunate circumstances that he had to. or at least decided to, withdraw from the squad both times he was picked.

3 at the back doesn't work when you play the likes of Coleman and Brady as your wingbacks. We build our team around the 3 at the back, this is why we're failing. Time to branch into a more conservative formation. 4-2-3-1 would suit our players down to the ground and allow Sammie to play in his best position.

Sammie can score goals and he is some what creative on the ball but I think Finn Azaz should be tried as a no 10 . He is more creative, a better passer and can score goals . Azaz is a much rounded no 10. He can bring other players in to play . He has good first touch and vision. He is a Wes type player , helps us control the game , worry the opposition . Where as Sammy is much more of a second striker . From what I have seen of him from Blackburn if he isn't scoring goals he doesn't offer that much on the ball .

Did Szammie play as a midfielder at Peterborough?

We should play our centre backs as full backs in my view like Man City and let our wide players carry the threat and our 4 defenders defend and come narrow if they have to. I would have a back four of OShea Scales Collins Omabamidele. And try O Brien there too if scales is out. Protect it with Cullen and Molumby/Smallbone and have a front four of Johnston Szmodics Ogbene and Ferguson against weaker sides and against Good team drop Johnston for Knight.

Yes I was thinking this too. We've 4 or 5 good centre backs but no good left back, so one could play there. I also think Ogbene is better in the attacking third of the field and not as good in the wing back role.

OShea has real pace. Saw it at times on tuesday too esp when we “chased” the game towards the end. Omobamidele is fast too.

City have very technical and mobile CBs playing at FB. And it's mainly a back three anyway. It depends on the phase of play. They also have Rodri and Stones/Kovacic receiving the ball from the defence compared to Cullen/Smallbone/Molumby. Ake and Akanji can cover large spaces and are duel specialists. |
