Yep, Festy may be able to play as a RWB, but he's really a winger and he certainly isnt a conventional right back.

And going forward he's probably not consistent enough to make up for his weakness in defense. Like Ogbene he's also a player that should be played in the final third. Defensively Rotherham were the best in the league and could accommodate Ogbene at RWB as they knew they had the players to cover him defensively if needed. Also gave Ogbene more freedom in attack to be more of a winger than wing back. |

He doesn't score enough goals to play as a winger, IMO. The traditional winger is pretty much dead. Adama Traoré is probably the only classic winger in The PL. RWB would probably be his best position. Most FBs are better at attacking than defending now anyway. Reece James is rare in that he can defend almost as well as he attacks.

4-3-3 is very common nowadays - indeed it was probably Kenny's preferred formation until he settled on the 3 CBs, so perhaps winger was the wrong term in that context, let's say wide forward player a la Salah. It's far too early to say whether or not his goal/assist output would be good enough in that position given he has rarely played there at senior level. Perhaps as an inverted left sided forward, he could produce numbers, who knows? He certainly isn't a natural defender, he is at his best running at players and beating them, something Ireland has sorely lacked vs the so-called minnows, where we seem to just pass away in front of their defences and offer no penetration. Still think he can be a useful impact sub for this Irish team particularly when we are struggling to break these kinds of teams down.

What the hell is a young player making a move abroad to a fordeigners land anyways? He should be in the Championship where he belongs
bloody hell, some of you lads should never become agents.

Wonder why he hooked him at half time then, did he get a knock or something. |

Speculation on my part but possibly a combination of a tactical change & the fact he's barely played this season (7mins vs AC Milan in August, 8mins vs Israel in Sept). He's right footed but was playing LWB. Udogie, who replaced him at half-time, is left footed. On Sofascore Festy got the higher rating of the 2 (6.7 vs 6.2). https://www.sofascore.com/player/festy-ebosele/983059 For those who don't want to click, the manager said this after: “The only lad who hadn’t played before was Festy Ebosele. But I would
pick him again as he trains hard. He’s a young lad who is settling in
and making progress.” Hopefully he'll start getting more regular minutes now.

Absolutely, but people need to remember he has just turned 20 and is at a top end Serie A club, so minutes may be hard to come by. He earned his move there and now he's looking to make a breakthrough at a very high level, patience may be required, but he's got there for a reason - Kenny should be looking to utilise his talents as an impact sub in the upcoming campaign imo.

This is it. I do actually think the Championship is gradually veering towards an attractive place for younger players as in 19-22 looking to break through again. Bar the 3/4 with dough from relegation they really don't have a pot to piss in hence have to start relying on academies, blooding youth a bit more. It's also turning into a more technical League so throwing 11 hoofers into the fray won't suffice. Even the most traditional hatchet clubs like Millwall are slowly trying to change. For Ebosele he was right to look for top flight football off an impressive season. PL clubs were going to go for the more proven older product so Italy or Spain was the next best option who haven't the money PL clubs have hence they will sign players like Ebosele. We do have certain players now that fit this criteria. Dara O'Shea is the probably the best example currently too good for Championship football but won't be fancy enough for PL clubs. Serie A or Bundesliga clubs however would upgrade with O'Shea in a heartbeat. It's players like this that need to show ambition and embrace moving to a top flight club in a continental League as opposed to settling for Championship football which for all is a decent standard is 2nd tier football. He's better then that.

He did okay last season. Le's not act like it was sensational. He didn't show that he was too good for The Championship. 2 goals & 1 assist. He only started half of his games last season. The Championship can compete with most other leagues outside of Europe's top 7/8 leagues. It's a well marketed league with good TV money, the clubs can offer good wages, and even attract foreign coaches from abroad who have potential to become PL managers. Even some League One clubs have decent financial clout. |

And the money floating around the EFL leagues will likely go up next summer with their current TV deal up with Sky. Talks that EFL are willing to scrape the 3pm TV blackout on Saturdays to sell more games and get a much better deal. Looking at trying to get Amazon, Netflix, or Apple involved in streaming games.

Just posted this in the eligible players thread, but it seems relevant here.
46 Irish players have seen game time in the Championship this season by my reckoning. Theres a few others who are Irish eligible such as Cirkin, Delap, Gooch?, Mason Bennett? bringing it to 50ish. About 30 of that 50 would be considered reasonably regular first team players, so about 10% of the playing pool in the League which is pretty significant.
Only 4 Chship clubs have not fielded an Irish player Luton, Watford, Coventry and Huddersfield. The fact that Luton and Coventry which were such hot beds of Irish emigration and have (or certainly had) very significant Irish communities is a bit of a surprise. |

I'm not quite sure Dara has proven he is too good for Championship football tbh - the team he is currently captaining are 3rd from bottom, but he is certainly a very good Championship defender who maybe lacks that bit of extra power and pace to make it to the top end of the PL. We like to big up our own players, we hear similar about Egan all the time. I have no doubt either of those lads could do a job in the Prem for a bottom half team as they have done previously, but I'm not sure either could really be considered too good for the Championship.

Never said he was sensational but he was a teenager that impressed hence some decent calibre of club came in for him as is often the case. Ebowei who was no better or worse then him was snapped up by Palace. Exactly outside the top 7/8 Leagues. The top 5 and I would say Holland too is superior to it no comparison. Hence players like Ebosele should be looking to test themselves at a higher level. To be admired.

Dara performed with credit in the PL and was basically leading them to a promotion charge again early last season until an unfortunate injury. All by the age of 22. Unfortunate for him that his club have had a meltdown both on and off the pitch since. One or two of the parachute payment clubs with money to burn were enquiring about buying him but you couldn't have blamed him too much sticking with West Brom. He is a player that has proven capable of playing at a higher standard of football then 2nd tier in the longer term is the point I'm making.

Surprised the Premier League didn't continue this after coronavirus to be honest. Blank 3pm kick offs and 2pm kick offs on a Sunday spread them out a bit more. The EFL could do with it outside the 4/5 parachute payment clubs they don't have much. Very much shoestring budgets.

Regular late night games on Saturdays and Sundays seem an obvious next step for the Premier League, at the expense of 3pm games on Saturdays. Eventually no reason why the 10 games each weekend can't be spread across separate time slots and all shown live - one on a Friday night, four on a Saturday, four on a Sunday and one on a Monday night. It seems inevitable. Not to mention games played overseas in time also. Rubbish for travelling supporters obviously, but they allowed themselves to be sold out for the money years ago so are in no position to complain at this point.
