The midfield in the under 21 team looks better than the senior team. Joke.

Presumably dropped: Lawal, Connell, Afolabi, Conor Grant, Lewis Richards, Shane Flynn, Alex Gilbert

Not selected would be Bowden and Cannon.

Festy must be still injured.

Question marks though over Okoflex, Obafemi and Finn-Benoa.

Obafemi would surely be picked on merit so huge question over his Ireland future now - is he finished with us?

Okoflex I would have thought would get in on under 23 form - has he turned down a callup also?

It seems odd bringing Finn-Benoa in for training but not having him in the squad, surely you pick him or you don't? Would be good to know what that's about - is he sitting on the eligibility fence also?

Colm Whelan is one that isn't mentioned much compared to the others but he's seriously prolific for UCD? Surely attracts interest from abroad or at least Rovers who will look for a striker soon?

I’d imagine so, think he missed the end of last season and hasn’t been in their first team squad yet either.

Jjp finn has been injured, got injured shortly after the last u21 call and has been out for a months, he's only getting back now and is working on fitness.

He turned 21 in July so in still eligible for u21s.

I believe the cut off is if the player turned 21 before 1st January 2000 anybody after that date is fine.

Born in 2000 so don't think so.
A worry he's not involved.  Or maybe he's just not good enough.

OkoFlex is my other concern as I'd have thought he'd be in on merit but maybe they don't fancy him.

Bowden is not as good as any midfielders we have called up based on what he has shown thus far.  Has a chance to get some exposure now he's playing in L2.  May see him in next squad if he impresses there.

Could be that JC and co. are sending messages to some lads after the Odubeko situation has carried on - you either want to play or you don't.  Ireland are not here to make you feel good about yourself and nor are we going abegging. Let some of these lads earn their stripes as opposed to thinking we need them.
I am, of course, speculating wildly here.

A few of the midfielders are on the cusp of playing for their clubs, Coventry on the bench a lot, kilkenny starting, noss and johansson making progress. Moran playing for the brighton seniors.

Wheres some of the seniors can't get a game... arter, hourihane etc.

Really hope this season sees some of the players breakthrough. Molumby, idah, parrott, kilkenny, Coventry etc.

Festy is injured, hasn’t been in last 2/3 Derby squads. As for the rest do any of them get in the squad on merit? Probably not!

I'd say of any of them that would have had a shout would be Okoflex & definitely Lawal, who is already captain of the Celtic B, he hasn't been named in any of the underage squads, given he was in the last U21 squad.
Yes Celtic B, he’s playing in the bloody lowlands league or whatever it’s called. He wouldn’t want to be spending too much time in that least! Connell is in limbo between both team and barely playing at all. As for Okoflex there could be any of a number of reasons why he’s not in the team.

There's a Fulham Under 23 player who has never played senior football and a 21 year old League of Ireland first division player in there so, while I mean no disrespect to either of those two, picking them ahead of a £5m rated guy who has scored against Man United and Chelsea in the Premier League just doesn't add up - there has to be another reason.

id would say Obafemi would think himself too big for the u21's? wasnt he annoyed that he didn't get a senior call up a while back. plus hes already played for the seniors.

Yeah, I was scouring the squad-list for those not playing first-team football and you could certainly say OF should be ahead of Ferguson in any objective analysis.

The odd thing is he was in the recent 19's camp which suggested he was back in the fold and it seems he is not eligible for England (and I'd forgive a 17-year old child playing for them to test the water).
Shame as he looks very useful at U23 level.
