I think this stat fits this thread:

away wins in qualifying games, 1934-1985 = 6

away wins in qualifying games, 1987-1993 = 7

Thanks for that. I have updated the list.

For some reason, the screamer that Robbie scored against Denmark, in 2002, I had thought that he had scored that goal against Sweden in 2006, in one of Staunton's first games.

Turns out it was Liam Miller who smashed one in from distance in that game.

And under the other managers
Giles(4)
Hand(4)
Charlton(12)
McCarthy(12)
Kerr(2)
Staunton(3)
Trapattoni(8)
O'Neill(5)
Kenny(6)

Terzino, you're missing a 3-0 win against Denmark in March 2002 under McCarthy, and the 3-0 win against Wales in February 2011 under Trapattoni

For me he's demonstrated the exact opposite. The distinct lack of positive results against non-minnows has shown that our previous pragmatism was more effective.

Kenny has the worst selection of Irish players in decades, but they play a better brand of football that can be effective.

I'd put down the lack of positive results to his tactical and organisational limitations, rather than an aversion to pragmatism.

Not if you're just knocking the ball back and over aimlessly in your own half it doesn't. I'd say we've actually been fairly one dimensional for the last 9 months or so.  We're not automatically knocking it long but we're not doing much else of interest with it either.

Take last night as an example even - the goals came from two crosses and a free kick. Against Greece it was another set piece. When it comes to scoring the few goals we score we're just scoring the same ones we always did, just that we've sacrificed our defensive solidity in the process, so our results are worse than ever.

I have a memory of us going 1-0 up in a game and winning....the legend on my leg says Stuttgart  12 June 1988..

We must have some sort of record for going 1-0 up at the start of a game, hang on until the last minute, then concede. I remember this happening often around the clinton morrison times and obviously more recently with portugal

I’m fairly certain Turkey drew 0-0 with San Marino in the ‘94 WC qualifiers in England’s group. They were awful away from home back then but tough to beat in Turkey. Qualified for Euro ‘96 and have usually been decent since.

Turkey back then were a neat passing team, but brittle.

I guess Galatasaray doing well in European competitions, throughout the 90s, helped improve their overall fortunes.
