That is exactly what it was. A jack off for the craic.

Yeah, this doesn’t need its own thread

This thread has turned into a bit of a nonstarter.
His mother mentioned an Irish relative and now we are looking for him to declare?

A brief footnote on the eligibility thread was all that was needed

Well believe it, because as I've literally just said, he turned England down in favour of representing us. That hardly tallies with you claim that he was "very keen to play for England at one time" considering he was lining out for us as a 21 year old?

I like Clint but he knew what side of his bread was buttered in fairness and he was never going to be capped by England.

He was competing with a long long list of available options for England at the time. Just a few to mention -

Vassell
Heskey
Owen
Sheringham (ok he was nearly done but ahead of Clint)
Beattie
Rooney
Defoe
Crouch

Others on the fringes too Andy Johnson etc.

A friend of mine knew Clint at Palace at the time (and Steven Reid incidentally) and Morrison was always very proud of his Irish heritage and of playing for Ireland. He never pursued an England call up. Same for Reid.

That's absolutely fine but i am sure he knew his own ability and knew it wasnt going to happen.

He did make that memorable ' come and get me ' plea to Sven Goran Eriksson in 1979 as a cocky flamboyant young loudmouth in his first season in the top flight but England had as indicated many other options, unlike ourselves. He watered that down a month later by expressing a desire to play for ' England or Ireland' and his agent said that he had 'a great desire to play international football' and would 'even consider an offer of an under-21 cap.' Mick McCarthy was pissed off with his attitude but got to like him when he was brought into the squad, though he did not play him in the World Cup. Like other careerists before and after, he did assimilate quickly and the Ireland fans took to him. He did make one famous gaffe as a pundit in 2017 when he referred to an Ireland v Wales qualifier as a contest between 'two British teams' but he did apologise promptly for that one when advised of the error of his ways.

He had very recently been playing for the England U-20 side when he declared for Ireland alright.

Cyrus Christie also turned down an England U-21 call up to play for us. Further in the past you also had the likes of Kilbane, McAteer, and Clinton Morrison turning down England underage call ups too in favour of lining out for us.

I doubt she's clued up on International qualification rules......could be a case she has a grandparent who is Irish so technically he has an Irish grandparent but not enough to meet the criteria
