Doherty has been very good the last few seasons, but surely Finnan would be ahead of him based on his whole career you would think. That is unless he's talking about Gary Big smile

Full back is a position where we've had good options strangely enough. Bench of Randolph, Doherty, Staunton, Harte, Kinsella, Wes and big Cas

Finnan or Carr not even make the bench?

Thanks for the heads up.

Johnny's team:-

Given
Tony Dunne
Irwin
Hurley
McGrath
Ronnie Whelan
Roy Keane
Liam Brady
Stapleton
Robbie Keane
Heighway
Giles team has 10 players born in Ireland and the odd one out being McGrath came home as a young child. 7 players from Dublin, 3 from Cork and 1 from Donegal. Being a decade or two younger than Giles, my team is the same as his except R  Dunne for Hurley, Beglin for T Dunne and Duff for Heighway. Heighway didn't repeat his club performances in a green shirt except for odd occasions one of which was in Wembley in 76 when he made mince meat of the English defence. Don't think Heighway played that many games for Ireland either.

Just on Dougan, I found that there was a biography of him written not long ago. It was supposed to be an autobiography written with a journalist, but Dougan died not long after it started. If it is well written the subject matter should be interesting.

Sorry Baldy!

I just came across a reference to Big Norm - 55 y.o. today btw - pointing out that he's the youngest player ever to have played 200 games for Man U - not Giggs, Best or Rashford etc.

Which is pretty remarkable for a 142 y.o. club with such a tradition of bringing through young players.

Cant be a surprise that this forum will go on a bit of a tangent.

He might have made a better schoolteacher -he did try hard but there was a lot of incredulity amongst NI fans at the time that Sammy and other low level artisans were getting picked ahead of the Doog.
Sorry, I meant that Morgan had played alongside Dougan for NI (vs Bulgaria, 1972), since their international careers just overlapped.

Anyhow, although Morgan made a living from the game, he was a journeyman who would not have been considered anything like international class had NI not been desperate for a CF in the early 70's. (We tried a few duds at that time.)

But one of the reasons they were desperate was because Dougan was "done", at least at international level, as the last 21 of his 43 caps proves:
11/12/1968 Turkey........ A W 3-0 WCQ
03/05/1969 England....... H L 1-3 BC
06/05/1969 Scotland...... A D 1-1 BC
10/05/1969 Wales......... H D 0-0 BC
10/09/1969 USSR.......... H D 0-0 WCQ
22/10/1969 USSR.......... A L 0-2 WCQ
18/04/1970 Scotland...... H L 0-1 BC
21/04/1970 England....... A L 1-3 BC
11/11/1970 Spain......... A L 0-3 ECQ
03/02/1971 Cyprus........ A W 3-0 ECQ 1 Goal
21/04/1971 Cyprus........ H W 5-0 ECQ 1 Goal
15/05/1971 England....... H L 0-1 BC
18/05/1971 Scotland...... A W 1-0 BC
22/05/1971 Wales......... H W 1-0 BC
22/09/1971 USSR.......... A L 0-1 ECQ
13/10/1971 USSR.......... H D 1-1 ECQ
20/05/1972 Scotland...... H L 0-2 BC
23/05/1972 England....... A W 1-0 BC
27/05/1972 Wales......... A D 0-0 BC
18/10/1972 Bulgaria...... A L 0-3 WCQ
14/02/1973 Cyprus........ A L 0-1 WCQ

The above also explains why the "incredulity" amongst NI fans which I recall was how DD could be so consistently deadly for his club, whilst misfiring consistently for his country.

He might have made a better schoolteacher -he did try hard but there was a lot of incredulity amongst NI fans at the time that Sammy and other low level artisans were getting picked ahead of the Doog. It was the equivalent of Robbie Keane being dumped for Joe Lapira. I appreciate Dougan's assessment of Sammy was rude, if accurate, and he did indeed have problems with authority but I always liked him as a player and he was certainly good craic to have a few beers with.
