David McWilliams had a good podcast on Thursday about the origins of Covid. Interviewed the author of a new book about it. An interesting listen.

Varadkar suggesting restrictions will be lifted slowly over two months LOL

They were originally implemented as caution as we did not know what to expect with Omicron. We know know and all restrictions should go asap

From a political point of view I can understand why he’s happy to prolong the reopening and be cautious because the public sentiment seems to be a lot are happy out with restrictions. No doubt a lot of that is due to the media coverage we have here and the likes of Sam McDonkey, Kingston Mills etc spreading fear across the community. Believe it or not; there are still people crossing the road when you’re walking towards them - happened me twice today. The Shinners go into hiding too when there’s a spike in infections and there hasn’t been a peep out of them regarding the crazy current restrictions.

What could well happen is that nightclubs will get a mid-March reopening and by then another variant of concern comes along and we’re back to square one and that sector is just obliterated. We still have never seen the science behind this and the fact there are house parties in lieu of late bars is just ignored by those in power.

They were quick to impose restrictions but painfully slow loosening them.

David Nabarro said in today's Business Post it's unlikely we will see a more lethal virus and that we are on the way to this being a common cold.
But yea, we could see more transmission and our gombeens will hit the panic button again

as holohan has compared ireland to scotland in the past it's interesting to see the scots are planning to remove the vast majority of restrictions next monday (the only restrictions imposed recently on pubs was table service - their opening hours were not reduced as in ireland).

Football and other large outdoor events resuming today Nicola Sturgeon’s said she hopes to announce that from 24 Jan, the following restrictions will end: - closure of nightclubs - limits on indoor crowds eg theatre, cinema - 1m rule, table service in hospitality

The vast majority of comparisons with Ireland were always to suit certain agendas though

First thing they should do is open up pubs and restaurants until at least midnight. I fail to see how those extra few hours made a material difference to the last wave.

Nightclubs, you could make an argument that they are virus playgrounds by nature (crowded, indoors, lots of mingling and shouting) but again, I wonder what material difference closing them actually made.

Maybe a good comparison would be the R rate in England (where they didn't really close) and Ireland (where we did have tougher restrictions).

The vast majority of comparisons with Ireland were always to suit certain agendas though
Every comparison made by NPHET was to give cover for most restrictive measures, and where the WHO and ECDC advice did not fit with their narrative, it was ignored. It's the elected government who have them free reign, and it was the electorate who gave the government its mandate to do that.

Name and Shame. Hard to have sympathy for a pub that’s doing that.

Horse and Hound in Harmonstown.

The pub was packed and I'd say they knew from experience that if they leave it later - lads be ordering loads of pints and they won't make it out for 8.

Manhatten in Raheny - last orders was 7.

Interesting that the lockdown in Netherlands didn't really quell the omircon wave and they still had record numbers of cases like most other countries.

Hopefully this is a sign that lockdowns, unless extreme hard lockdown, are not the answer. Happy to hear it looks like we are heading towards lifting most restrictions and hopefully we don't go backwards again.
