I fear we may see a rebound up again as the UK variant takes full hold
You can’t really take a sample of 1 and hopefully just a a blip.
It should be going down interactions are away down.
Another key indicator would be the actual numbers of swaps taken if this is down we are heading in the right direction.
The word on the ground is that it’s quieter at GP level than it was last week which is a good indicator of things moving in a positive direction.
I hope it's just a blip, but the cold, hard logic of a variant which is at least 55% more transmissible is very worrying

That variant has increased from 10 to 25 to 45% of our cases - the 45% figure was two or three days back, based on samples which presumably were taken several days previously - so the 45% figure would be from at least a week ago

You'd have to imagine that 45% figure has probably increased to at least 55-60% right now

As that percentage moves up, the cold hard logic of a more transmissible variant predominating takes over - it will be harder to get the number of cases down, and if and when there's any release or relaxing of restrictions, or adherence to them reduces, the ability of the virus to spread and increase the amount of cases much more quickly takes over
And ultimately if all things remained the same logic dictates that the numbers would rise.

But things aren’t the same restrictions are tighter, vaccine rollout has started everyone vaccinated is one less chance of further transmissions, we are heading for better weather and everyone that has got it is immune for something in the region of 8 months.
And the people who would get it once restrictions lift have a way less chance of becoming seriously ill.

We are going in the right direction all be it slowly by Easter we will be in a much more positive place

I think when the over 70s get done then we'll go out of restrictions.

Not to be a scaremonger lads but the Brazil strain looking very dangerous, might be resistant to vaccine. Borders need to close. People need to start taking this seriously, the more people mix the higher the chance of this thing mutating

At the point when all vulnerable groups and HCW have been vaccinated id imagine that the financial implications of continued restrictions will come to prominence. By then NPHET will more or less have their job done and vaccination roll out will be priority. Eventually there'll come a time when covid will be another illnesses that cause death like cancer, heart disease, stroke and flu. Then we will be living with covid.

Are there any official sources in relation to actual number of vaccines which have been administered?

Varadkar quotes a graph from Our World in Data but when you delve in to the sources behind each countries figures, they've listed our source as a tweet from Richard Chambers saying Donnelly has assessed that we have exceeded our target of 35k as of 11th Jan. Ewan McKenna (I know) was the original source of Varadkar's tweet, but it's still a valid point.

An awful lot of backslapping going on without providing any official proof to back it up. I would hope that we've exceeded targets but it wouldn't be unlike them to not deliver on promises made.

You don't have to understand science. You do though have to able to understand black and white data.

It shows 109 people killed in two days in this country, a significant spike in fatalities. If you can read that, then it's understandable to have concerns about how things are going.

I can find very little information on line about this. Care to elaborate?

You realise that there is a lag between cases to hospitalisations to deaths. As has been mentioned here already, were not even two weeks into the vacinne programme. Those who died this week likely contracted the virus before the first vaccine was administered here.

Out of curiosity, what was the other forum you referenced in your previous post?

The UK case numbers are still running high at 47k but coming down from the peak of 60k.... they need to come down quickly as the hospitals are all full.

Good news is 165k people got the vaccine today - that’s about 1.2M a week.
Their target is 2M a week so there is talk of opening up centres 24/7 to get more people vaccinated.

Yes and those people will have picked up the virus in the last 21 days most of them before the virus was given to even one person in ireland and certainly before anybody got 2 doses of the vaccine.  So your assessment of the vaccine is totally wrong and you are able to regurgitate data but you certainly are unable to understand and interpret the data in any meaningful manner.

The vaccine has been around for several weeks. 56 of today's deaths recorded, occurred in 2021.

Vaccines need to actually be inside people to stop them dying.
