Advisors are like assistant managers in football.  They are the gift of the person appointing them and they just pick a person they trust.  Some go for a journalist, others go for a policy wonk and some go for a trusted friend they know and trust for years.  Often they are member of the party too but not alway.  They lose their position the minute the minister loses their job so there is no job security in the role.

She's seconded from the OPW so it's not like she's out of a job when the FG bloodbath commences after the GE. Handy number all the same when you can be plucked from the public service and thrown in on 100k plus expenses because of who your sister is.

Not sure what the issue is. Itā€™s the gift of any minister to pick whoever they like as they will be the ones relying on their advisor.  She has done it before and she is obviously of FG blood. Both of which are attributes he will be looking for.   In addition he has just come from OPW so he would have worked with her directly recently.  Donā€™t see how itā€™s different to any other advisor appointment.  It will be the same whichever party is in power too.  The advisors will be a mixture of loyal party councillors, media experts, policy wonks etc whether itā€™s SF, FF, FG, SD or Lab in gov.

The system is garbage, but the optics of appointing a prodigal party members sister, within days of her return is also garbage. Since these jobs are tax payer funded and not open competition, they should be the average industrial wage. Then let's see how many of those south of the Liffey take these positions

I donā€™t think anyone would do it for that money.  You would be mad to.

Why are people obsessed with people in the political realm working for the ā€˜average industrial wage.ā€™ For some reason this became a political ploy, when in truth the excess above the average industrial wage wasnā€™t going back to the exchequer but into party coffers or into other organisations that effectively subscribed to the same ideology. Iā€™d like to know how much of the excess money was ever returned to the exchequer from those who took the average industrial wage.

Simply a Trotskyist agitational piece of b/s, empty vessel rhetoric beloved of the likes of the Socialist Party and the like. I have never met one of these folks who didnā€™t trouser the dosh when opportunity arose while simultaneously whining in a prolier than thou fashion about venal capitalists.

I think playing politics with wages and salary is the lowest of the low in terms of appealing to voters (well, apart from the right wing nonsense spouted by the likes of the National Party). If that money is not going back to the exchequer it is being spent in a way that the recipient is willing to spend it even if all they are seeing is the ā€œaverage industrial wage.ā€

Its one thing to draw down only the average industrial wage. But to do that and have high expenses is completely hypocratic. It basically means your not spending your wage. And alot of politicians are at that
