I said SF supported the agreement. Thats a fact, so its not a 'position' or a 'perspective'. Funny how you found fit to pick me up on that, in spite of you calling a fact a 'perspective'.

So is supporting the GFA a ‘unionist’ position now?

You really seem to be doubling down on this ‘perspective’ thing. Is it really a Unionist perspective that SF supported the GFA?

I think Hetfield is getting unjustified stick in here. Surely the GFA is a good thing!

Jesus wept this is childish stuff from people who shoukd know better
The GFA was undoubtedly a good thing and anybody who thought it isnt wasn’t is an idiot and were likely still in their dad ball sack when the troubles were going on My only quibble would be the lack of clarity on a border polll but happy that all parties know the direction of travel and this place will be diverging from GB

to give a bit of background in case it's not well known, it's a pretty hard-nosed Republican position to not be happy with the GFA. As someone outlined, what did nationalists get out of it? Vague wording around a border poll with no clear steps to that poll. The big thing that sticks in the craw was the Republic giving up their claim on the 6 counties and it did in fact legitimise the British claim to Irish land in Irish law, which was (and is) a big deal imo. Het you are right as well that SF supported it and the more extreme republicans have never forgiven them for that either. I wouldn't say the GFA wasn't a good thing at all, just giving some background on it. It helped achieve peace and stopped the killing but I'd say it's clearly no longer fit for purpose because society has changed so much in the north. Although there's nothing in the GFA about constantly pandering to the DUP and being scared to piss them off, but here we are.

SF supported it because they were heavily infiltrated by the British (so too were the IRA in key areas like Derry and Belfast, not so much East Tyrone and not at all in South Armagh.) It gave SF\IRA the option of ending the war and selling it to grass roots Republicans as a victory when they were defeated and the leadership knew it. The appetite to continue the armed struggle was well and truly over at this stage and with the accidental killing of civilians far too often - it was unjustifiable and any level of support was gone. Which is why the GFA vote was so high in CNR areas. The vast majority of prisoners did not support it, because they were smart enough to know that SF sold out - some did as they got to walk out of prison a free man with some people carrying hefty sentences. Sean Kelly got 9 life sentences and walked out after 2 years as an example. There are many more. This is the only thing that SF got out of it - the release of it's prisoners. (Loyalist's also got out too). SF did not get to influence the contents of the GFA at all. The GFA is far too vague on the details, especially around the border poll as this can only be called by SOS, but details of this - even after 25 years are unknown, and academics have tried to get the criteria of this from the British government for 25 years now and they've never got a response! |

The criteria for a border poll should of been clearer however does anybody really imagine test the British won’t call one if the polls/ results point otherwise ? They are disengaging as can be be seen from the WF
Always remember the young tour guide in Belgrade saying Yugoslavia coujd of broke up peacefully if people hsd had a bit more patience I am happy to be patient knowing the outcome isn’t in doubt

Correct. There are no votes here for the Tories or Labour, the main unionist party is a collection of dolts who have pissed off everybody at Westminster and are no longer useful, the place is expensive to maintain especially with the own goal of Brexit. The GFA has often been described as a masterpiece of ambiguity but the punch-line is the exit door mechanism which Scotland and Wales currently do not have. Demographics and realpolitik will take their course.

. Thats how I understand it. It is more about when than if a UI happens. Once the numbers stack up it will happen.
