"Change". I remember when this well-meaning slogan underpinned Barack Obama's campaign after years of George Bush.
Now its just a disgraceful dog-whistle which is applied to any situation to undermine the democratic will of the people.

You really need a Twitter account with small Irish flag, a profile picture of a mysterious 19th century imperial colonist and 47303482 in your user name.

Ruth Morrisey died today,a victim of the cervical check scandal, I hope varadkar and Harris are hanging their heads in shame.
Varadkar promised no woman would have to go through the trauma of court while ill despite using this lady as a test case despite her illness, and just to insult her further NO apology from him, hapless Harris, hse, or government. This country really has gone to sh*t.

Some man for hyperbole, that's horrific but the county has not 'gone to sh*t', I suggest you look at other countries, Brazil, Lebanon, Zimbabwe, certain US states, Egypt,, Libya, Hong Kong etc etc for what 'going to sh*t' actually looks like.

we can aspire to be better though,
1 year mandatory prison term for public littering would be a good start, 10 years for dog foul

Way off the mark there Muff, it's off topic for this thread so won't go into detail but I suggest you do some reading For someone who is part Hong Kong-er and has family there, it's horrific and soul destroying to see what's happened there.

Eamonn Ryan wins a tight election to continue leading the GP.
This will undoubtedly be a chance for the clown and freak parties to gaslight the Green Party for actually taking responsibility.

It doesn't matter who the leader is. They'll always be regarded as a Dublin only party.

They are actually the first all-Ireland party in government. SF is the first to lead the opposition. Some of the other parties such as FF, FG and Labour have a smattering of members in the north but do not contest elections here. FF has a nebulous alliance with the SDLP that is not helpful to either party. The Greens have some good people in the north but few here would see them as anything other as a mudguard for the two big Civil War parties in the new Dáil Éireann.

There is a rhetoric emerging at the moment that the Green Party isn't a real Green Party. And in many respects I'm glad that they are not. There is little consistency in what a Green Party is, and the Irish version evolved into a pragmatic organisation, that sees legislative action as the strongest action they can take in tackling the climate crisis. They have been that way inclined for some time, and they have been rebuilt from a very low ebb. Its a hell of a lot better than some of the international Green Parties.
I noticed that yesterday, high profile member Saoirse McHugh, left the party, mentioning the formation of an eco-socialist party. To do so would be to reinvent the wheel. This wouldn't even be the first time in the past decade that a Green faction left to do its own thing, Fis Nua was still a thing 18 months ago. While also RISE got there first, and exist with Paul Murphy at the helm. Sure, they are just another evolution of the identity of the Socialists/AAA/Solidarity, but that's their goal.

I like Saoirse but she's too impetuous for her own good, I agree with nearly all of what she says but you can't afford to be too impetuous in electoral politics because it's a soul destroying grind where positive change comes slowly, I hope she's able to dig out a niche for herself as an activist but it's hard to see her ever cutting it in electoral politics, especially stuck up there in the arsehole of Mayo where they prefer their TDs to clutch rosary beads
Ten years ago Killian Forde was the future of Sinn Fein, then he left for Labour, now he's gone from politics altogether, if you get too impetuous you end up defeating yourself Then on the other hand Stephen Donnelly got elected on an explicitly anti-FF platform and then waltzed into FF There's different rules for them lot though

But that's an example of politics over principle. And while McHugh is getting the plaudits of her online community, which is riddled with people who don't want to accept that Governance requires more than a clenched fist, and a defiant stare, Donnelly now sits at the cabinet table. He has a direct impact on legislation. McHugh's former party shares that cabinet table, and she had influence within that party, for the sake of principle, she has stepped outside of that, and I don't think that's a wise move, because the two do not have to be mutually exclusive. Also, any phoenix party that arises from her departure, and those who support her is, as I said, to re-invent the wheel, and duplicate what's already there. The space was occupied by Fis Nua (and their vote share speaks for itself), and RISE.
Mary Robinson's book on Climate Justice is a fantastic read, but a common trend in the case studies she writes about is that the people impacted most by climate change, have a longstanding history of voting against their own interests, by voting for the likes of the Republican Party (Alaska and Mississippi both feature), who have a entire wing who oppose climate science and repudiate the overwhelming scientific consensus. Electoral politics is hugely important, and the last decade has certainly confused activists that it is not as important as it was once seen to be. Issues like Repeal, Marriage Equality, and Water Charges were ripe for direct action, protests, and campaigning. But those are just some of the issues that come before Government, and if you start trying to employ the same tactics when dealing with more esoteric issues like taxation etc, the protests will be much smaller, and interestingly, they will be party led, and they will definitely fall on deaf ears. The power of protest is huge, and massively influential, but try holding a rally about increasing personal taxation, and see how far that goes. Those are issues that you need legislative power to determine, and when you have the electoral mandate, you have the keys to the city.
