Since when was refusing to even speak with a party who won the popular vote part of a representative democracy. As for the public meetings being part of Government formation could you tease that one out for me?

Well the first one is FF/FGs problem. It is for the elected TDs to decide who forms the next government. What do these public meetings have to do with anything? SF didn’t get enough votes to go it alone or lead a coalition with a party they would prefer to get involved with. If FF/FG (and perhaps the Greens) form a Government that is with the authority of the people.

You do realise this is posturing and gamesmanship by Sinn Fein don't you? Paint it that the old boys club is preserving the carve up and that SF who want to bring in sweeping reforms are being denied by those with their noses in the trough. It is all about the narrative and SF are the masters in the North anyways at dictating the narrative. SF will want to go into opposition. We all know and they themselves know they aren't ready for Government yet. They haven't the infrastructure or local grassroots in many places. 4-5 years in opposition whilst painting themselves as denied power- denied the chance to break up the old boys club- denied the chance to bring about real change. In the next election they could nearly romp home.

Brilliant turn out in the Roachestown Park hotel in cork for Sinn Feins PUBLIC RALLY tonight far exceeded the numbers expected, bit like the election, no wonder the silent minority are sh*tting themselves.

Is the correct answer, or very very close to it. The election was 3 weeks ago, nothing fundamental has changed, we still need 2 of the main 3 parties to form a government. FG were first out of the blocks on the very day of their poor results, stating they were ready for opposition and weren't going into government with SF. FF weren't as sure, but after a meeting of their party a few days later, stated the same. If both are to be believed about not working with SF, then the only options are to join together or go for another election. Neither great options, but the whole thing is a charade. If they were actually serious, LV & MM would have started talking to each other the day after and we would have a government by now. In recognition of the fact a lot of voters don't want that option, including some of their own, they have to have ''talks'' and tough sounding soundbites about ''red lines'' and ''fundamental differences'' over a few weeks to give the impression they were more or less forced together eventually and very much against their will in order to keep the evil SF away. The outcome will be portrayed as some kind of indescribably difficult negotiating genius that only certain experienced and shrewd politicians could possibly achieve. Even though the numbers pointed this way from the feckin exit polls. SF have seen this coming a mile away and have responded with (for Irish politics) a very unusual tactic, as described by Stick there above. Leo criticising these meetings as some form of sinister gatherings has only served to give the meetings more oxygen. Striesand effect etc. If he wants the SF meetings to be cancelled, maybe give Micheal a call first thing in the morning and have a government formed by midday, if it bothers him that much. They're going to get together in a month or 6 weeks anyway, so maybe spare us all the nonsense in the meantime & crack on with it. |

Darragh O Brien of FF claiming Sinn Feins meeting are “an attempt to break the state”.... coming from the party who actually broke the state financially
FF & FG are making this way to easy for SF. Nearly everything they do is increasing SFs popularity, i not sure whether it’s worrying or hilarious how rattled they are

I think Deise has summed it up well. I think FF/FG are making problems for themselves with their antics. On the one hand they claim SF is run by shadowy figures yet on the other condemn public meetings by public representatives where no doubt peoples views are being taken on board. Unless of course the Army Council are taking minutes at the meetings so as to formulate future strategy. Second is that they are spending so much time attacking everything SF do they are not offering solutions. It reminds me very much on the SDLP in the early 2000's when SF was closing in on them. They spent far more time attacking SF rather than formulating their own plans. And they paid the price.
In the North SF often have public meetings after a certain agreement or milestone. For instance when Stormont fell there were a series of public meetings where SF who often have their ear to the ground got a full sense of how the community felt. The message came back loud and clear that no return to Stormont without change would suffice. And SF stood by that. There was meeting after meeting from all hues of Nationalism around brexit. There have been public meetings of civic Nationalists where they appealed to the Irish Government to get ready for unity. Varadkar's comments in that context were frankly ludicrous.

I certainly take the points in both these quoted posts, and I also agree that it is beyond time to start actively pursuing good-faith Government negotiations, and ultimately that requires lines being crossed either by discussing with the Shinners or accepting that FF/FG must happen. Politicians from FF/FG can’t have it both ways, or else they run the risk of another election, which is the best time for the Shinners to capitalise. Having said that, I feel another election will ultimately throw up a similar result as far as Government negotiations are concerned, even if the Shinners picked up another 25 seats, as I feel too many would be picked off left wing parties who benefited from SF standing too few candidates. But it would weaken the hand of FF/FG and it would weaken their mandate to Govern together.

Peader Tobin on the radio saying that whilst in SF, he never took direction from Army Council.
No surprises there anyway. |
