Good, so you are confirming it was an assist then, thanks!

Scores his 4th of the season - for all of the lamentations about our lack of midfield options, there's been very little mention of him (or Knight) having good seasons in the Championship.

I think the game in Athens probably dampened the enthusiasm for him in some of our minds which is unfair. We weren’t set up properly and no one played well. Hes a reasonably promising player for sure. I’d hope he will have a good few years in and around the Premier League or top part of the Championship

Brian Kerr doesn't think he is good enough to play a creative role for Ireland . Kerr is a very good judge of a player . I think finn azaz should take his place in midfield.

This lad has been anonymous for us every time he plays, it's like the game swallows him up and he doesn't really know what to do.

In fairness . International football can be very hard to adapt to . As good as Houlihan was for Ireland . He never got near the performance levels that he had for Norwich.

He was excellent in his first appearance for us, and has been grand in a struggling team since. Clearly a young midfielder flying high for one of the best teams in the Championship couldn't possibly be any use to us though, nothing new there.

After the Kenny era, it's a clean slate with the all the players as far as I'm concerned. Smallbone was hardly the only player underperforming when you had a team consistently failing to get results or be competitive in any way in our qualification campaigns.
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.

Think he's best position for us is gonna be playing in a deeper role. The one time the U21s midfield trio properly clicked for Crawford was with Coventry playing as the 6, Smallbone playing as the 8, and an out and out 10 in Noß.

Think you could possibly recreate that trio with Cullen, Smallbone, and Azaz.

I think you could only play those three against the weaker teams . Playing those three against Holland, France even Ukraine Scotland would be a disaster . I would replace Smallbone with Moulmby.

I know Moulby is only a work horse but in the second match against ukraine he really did stifle their midfield . he didn't give them any time on the ball . Unlike the first match where they controlled the midfield and really got at our defence.

He brilliant against France as well, was Irelands player of the match.

I think people have to remember that Smallbone is only into his second season of  regular senior  first team football only at 23, turning 24yo.
He missed two important development years of football with serious injuries and before that he was just breaking in and out of the Southampton team. So I think it is a bit harsh to be judging him relative to his age and his first few caps.
If Southampton get promoted to the PL next for next season, and hopefully they do, we will potentially have another PL midfielder in our squad. I agree with what others are saying that he will probably be a better  No 8 for us as his all round game is improving for the position. He played a lot of Right midfield and attacking midfielder when he was breaking into the  Southampton first team first.
I think Joe Hodge is in a similar position Smallbone when he was 21/22yo, he has not play too much regular senior football due to injuries and needs to get playing.
