I expect him to do a Grealish now he has scored against Huddersfield reserves...

True LOL some of these young lads must think they should be in the next England squad after scoring against teams like Huddersfield. Would like to know his connection to Ireland

The long and small of it, at least there wasn't a VAR bone of contention with this one.

Played five times for our u-19s according to the stats and scored two goals

Yes, he was part of that outstanding U19 team of two years ago with Troy Parrott, Coventry, Idah et al (Connolly on the bench - serious talent in that year group) that went to the Euros and was harshly knocked out on penos by eventual winners Netherlands.

Smallbone had a serious injury interrupt his development -  which he's just recently come back from, hence he's not played underage for us for a while.

Very nice, technical player, two good feet.

Looking forward to having Kenny integrate him at U21 level and beyond.

It would appear to me she had the full English...although with a name like Smallbone she may only have had a half portion.

Doesn't say much about Ireland bar that his mother is fully Irish.
The NL is when such lads should be tested.

Yep.
I'd have this lad in the U21 squad for the upcoming double-header.  Let SK get a chance to really work with him and let him see what our up and coming setup is like.
If he keeps playing in the PL then he should be in the senior squad in September.
No messing about.

It's a potentially nice benefit of our succession plan that some of the younger lads can really feel like they are on the upcoming senior manager's radar from a young age and get a chance to work directly with him prior to any potential future International call-up.

100% - Ryan Johansson even said that was a factor in him declaring for us. I’d definitely much rather he be working with Kenny than Noel King.

He’s a tidy player. Great feet. Hopefully he’ll have a career

It is a pity that ship has sailed to Sweden. Best of luck to the lad though he did everything he could.

quality assist in the didn't against Bristol city on Friday. Obafemi kinda set up two 😂 one he pressurised the keeper into a mistake. The other his poor shot rebounded to a saints player to finish. Odowda also scored

Kenny is not going to have much time for these chancers. You either want to play or you don't.

Considering Smallbone has come though the ranks under Kenny, I'd be surprised if jumped ship.

I think if the u21s were playing tomorrow he'd start. Looks a very good player from what little I've seen of him.

I'd chance that smallbone, molumby, knight, parrot, connolly, obafemi and collins are the players most likely to see some/further senior caps.

He wants to play for us.

And as Stephen Kenny this week at last has the opportunity to scout out talent for the senior Ireland squad which he will select in September, Smallbone says his hopes are to follow club-mates Shane Long and Michael Obafemi into the senior Irish squad.

"It's a massive dream of mine to go on and become a full international. To have people like Michael and Shane in the team who have both played for Ireland is really helpful," Smallbone told the Southampton Daily Echo.

That's what I took from it too. He didn't say that it was a dream of his to play for Ireland. He said it was a dream of his to play international football. I really hopes he sticks with us, but until he's tied to us I won't be getting too excited.

Or, he wants to play international football.

That's what I took from it too. He didn't say that it was a dream of his to play for Ireland. He said it was a dream of his to play international football. I really hopes he sticks with us, but until he's tied to us I won't be getting too excited.

Its the truth of it, what you took from it.  Very simple to say any combination of the following - I want to play for Ireland  / only for Ireland internationally / dreamed of playing for Ireland  / I am Irish / I feel Irish

But he didn't and that was no accident.

To be fair Paulie us lads are far too long in the tooth to be getting excited by anything that doesnt involve getting up out of a chair without making a noise and of course the pubs reopening

The paranoia is real LOL After that line, he didn't mention Nathan Redmond or Ryan Bertrand, he mentioned Long and Obafemi. The obvious implication being that he's discussing Ireland. Its normal speech to say "I want to play international football" and expect that the context makes it obvious who you're talking about. Your childlike desire for explicit confirmation is heartwarming though. Perhaps he should start referring to himself as "Irish" Will Smallbone, the "Irish" footballer, who plays in "Irelands" midfield, etc LOL

Like Rice mentioned Randolph when he was in the chose your words carefully phase you mean ? :)   paranoia is justified, until a ref blows to start a game for points with him on the field.

No, paranoia is not "justified", it's chosen. The excessive scepticism really is ridiculous when you think about it, what percentage of underage players who line out for us actually end up defecting? 5% perhaps? Simply assuming that everyone is Rice or Grealish has no more basis than assuming everyone is Kilbane or McGeady. You can only take each case on it's own merits, and the merits of this case are that Smallbone has indicated he wants to play international football (citing his two Irish international teammates as examples), and has made absolutely no indication that he wants to play for England.

In reality nothing will be confirmed until Kenny calls him up and he is capped in competitive game... get it out of the way early as he seems to have to potential to be useful for us... and if he doesnt want to play for us move on, no big deal really!!!

Sept 3rd we go to Bulgaria and 3 days later we host Finland.
Two competitive games and while we want to be doing well in them, we also want to blood players.
Smallbone, if he plays more PL games between now and then, and I expect he will, should be near the top of the list to be blooded.
One issue is these two games are prep matches for the big play-off a month later, so need to be used to get the players setup for that.
But a PL starter should be at least in the squad for that double-header and if he shows up, should be capped.

On the bench with idah also on the bench for norwich.

Will be good to see how obafemi gets on.

All in all it would be good to see Obafemi, smallbone and idah all on the pitch at some point today

He's just after coming on for the last 10 or so minutes.

Idah is also after coming on from Norwich, very positive to see Thumbs Up

Approximately the precise percentage that are actually good enough to play for England. Depends if he thinks he is?

So....Rice and the uncapped Grealish, then? The likes of Harry Kane, James Madison, Gazza, etc don't count as they never wore the green. Very early days re Smallbone but I would trust Stephen Kenny to be on the ball on these matters. Even Martin O'Neill had the wit to give Michael Obafemi his debut at a very young age to make sure he was our player before Nigeria or England did.

Talk about jumping the gun but my wording could've been better LOL

Haven't seen much of him. Think he scored a goal in the FA cup earlier this year.

Plenty of English born guys who have played for us could have won a few caps for England, just look at how average many of the guys capped by England over the last 20 years have been. Are you seriously suggesting that its impossible for an English born player to favour playing for Ireland for any reason other than not being good enough for England?

Maybe. He did prevaricate about it, Michael is credited with making an unequivocal decision on it but the wording of the statement giving O'Neill credit was obviously crafted by an agent. End result is that we have an outstanding young player who wants to play for Ireland. No complaints.

Did he prevaricate? I thought he was just very hesitant.

No I don't think there's any English born player this century to capped by us would've got more than a couple of caps for England. I don't think its impossible but unlikely, maybe if their family is all Irish but I don't think we've had any of those since Killbane and Breen. All the ones England have shown any real interest in - Keane, Grealish, Rice - have defected.

Kilbane and Breen were never near good enough to play for England.

Kilbane and Breen would likely have been at least called up by England at some stage. They'd never have played much, but they might have won a few caps. Certainly, they didn't just play for Ireland because they were "England no-hopers", they genuinely considered themselves Irish.

Maybe not for full caps but didn't Kilbane turn England down at underage level, telling them he wanted to play for Ireland ? And don't forget the reverse ferrets of the two Keanes ( Michael and Will, that is, not Roy and Robbie ).
