From Stokes twitter, 58' Campbell and Gayle combine to set up Smallbone, who powers home from 14 yards.

The Idah Smallbone partnership, not quite as potent as the Long Cox partnership

He's done well at Stoke, definitely deserves a shot in the upcoming friendlies.

Getting a lot of praise from Stoke fans tonight for his defensive shift vs Luton. Played a deeper role, apparently won the ball back a lot, not something you'd usually associate with him. Perhaps he'll end up more a direct replacement for Hendrick rather than the most advanced midfielder.

Hasenhuttl when talking about him before said Smallbone could play any of the midfield roles and did feel more comfortable playing the deeper role. Played well for the U21s when he replaced Kilkenny and Noß played as the ten. Would like to see him play that role Hendrick does against Malta.

Watched a bit into the second half on, he made a lot on interceptions, some he held onto and others he didn't but he broke down a few the Luton attacks. He worked hard defensively and got forward to join the attack at times too.
I think he will improve and get more consistent as the season goes on. We have to remember this is his first real run of constant starts and game time in senior football since 2020 when he broke into the Southampton first team.

Had a good game last night playing slightly deeper by all accounts in an important 2 nil win for Stoke. 7.20 rating as per Whoscored. Enjoying a better season than Szmodics, Browne, Hendrick or Molumby based on the ratings, though tbf none of them are having stellar seasons by any means.
He could end up being a welcome option as an 8 particularly vs weaker teams, perhaps switching to a 10 vs stronger opposition. Should definitely be in the mix for a starting berth for Ireland imo, the current trio of Cullen, Molumby and Knight is too defensive/workmanlike. If not him, then Brady who is currently fit and playing in midfield on occasion or O'Dowda are worth a look also. Azaz would have been another contender. Against weaker teams would a midfield trio of Cullen, Smallbone and Brady be an option? I'd like to see that vs Malta.

Shows his importance to the Stoke team this season, despite maybe not posting the G/A figures we would all like to see! The 2 Green Hearts on his verified account following his deserved call up hopefully point to no need for concern over his allegiance. His Kilkenny born mother must be proud! Looking forward to the introduction of a more progressive style player to our midfield. There's a spot there for the taking imo!

With the new rules brought in does a friendly game now tie him to Ireland because he's gone 21?
Interesting if he plays that deeper role in a midfield three or Stoke move him back to the advanced role of the three. Think long term he'll be the better option of replacing Hendrick. Think he could do a job in Cullen's role but not sure what his off the ball work rate is like. |

No he's definitely not a 6. Having watched a fair bit of him - I'd say he's an 8 and a half, his work rate off the ball and game intelligence is excellent, basically he can play as an 8 or a 10. Medium term I'd like to see a midfield 3 of Cullen, Knight and Smallbone - there's a little bit of everything there, with Molumby (or Coventry) as understudy to Cullen, Hendrick (or Hodge) as understudy to Knight and Mc Grath (or Azaz) as back up to Smallbone. Taylor, Kilkenny and Ronan next in line. I think Kenny will go with Cullen, Molumby and Knight vs France, but thats a pretty regressive midfield tbh and I'd hope Smallbone might get a look in vs Greece where we need to try and win (rather than not lose) the game. Having said all that, Knight needs a bloody move sooner rather than later, he's progressed as far as he can with Derby. Even if they go up, I still think he should be looking for a new challenge at this stage.
