It would be a far better tournament with 16 teams. You wouldn't have the nonsense 4 or 5 day turnarounds. You wouldn't have 5/6 teams of absolute fluff standard as you do in a 20 team tournament. The way the group stage is currently set up, you basically have 30 plus matches out of 40 that are absolutely meaningless. That is ridiculous stuff. On this year's tournament, the one thing about South Africa winning it is that at least they fulfilled all of their fixtures in the tournament. Still an asterisk over the whole thing but at least NZ or England who managed to get a nice rest before the knockout stages didn't win it.

South Africa are worthy winners.
Played their best match in the final and played all their fixtures. I feel it was unfair England didnt have to play France. England have lost 3 finals now. Same as France. The southern Hemisphere have now won 8 of the 9 world cups. The gap may be closing but they still win when it matters most. |

I'm heading straight to College Green to get a good viewing spot for the Joe's triumphant homecoming parade tomorrow. Sure it's only a few light showers...

Genuinely thought that d'Irish egg meeeja would leave at least a respectable 24 hours before attempting to shamelessly climb on the Sith Ifrican victory bandwagon, but I can only stand back and admire this example of journalistic line speed from Franno. Truly one of us. |

That’s brilliant! It is good to see some decent comedians coming through the ranks in Ireland, it has been a while.

One of the more interesting post-mortem theories here from retired Irish rugby pro Darren Cave.
To summarise it, he believes Ireland's player welfare management (lads only playing in a certain amount of games before being rested) gives them an advantage in the 6N, which we generally do well in for the past decade. Come the RWC, 2 things happen, first, the rest of the teams have the same preparation/time together, catch up with Ireland preparation wise, so that advantage is neutralised, and secondly, our players haven't enough experience of playing consecutive games in a row in a short period of time as players from other teams. Dunno if he is right or wrong, but he makes a reasonable argument anyway. |
