Real Madrid still won the Champions League last year with one of their weakest squads in probably 20 plus years. LA Liga is just fine. Looking forward to seeing Lewandowski get going this season.

I wasn't talking about 15 years ago, I deliberately said "these days". And here's the evidence: I mean, when the mighty Barca have to sell the family silver to sign eg 33 y.o. Lewandowski for €45m + €5m add-ons, when Haaland, the most sought-after young striker in the world, went to M.City for €60m, it shows just how far they've fallen. Meanwhile, Real Madrid aside, none of the other Spanish clubs are paying big money for big names from abroad, never mind Galacticos.

You are equating spending to success. Over the last 5 years, Villareal have a net spend of about 10 million, Sevilla about 40 million, Atletico about 90 million, and all of them have won the europa league. Over the same period, United have spent 500 million, Spurs 250 million and Arsenal 400 million without a single european trophy.

Signing Lewandowksi shows how far they’ve fallen?
They were also able to sign Raphina ahead of Chelsea, fact remains the best players still want to play for either Real Madrid or Barcelona. I have no doubt had Madrid chased Haaland instead of Mbappe he would be a Madrid player.

City beat a whole host of top European teams to the signing of Haaland after triggering the 21-year-old's £51million Borussia Dortmund release clause in early May. The striker appeared set on a move to Spain, with Real Madrid understood to be among the frontrunners for his signature, however, the in-demand hitman decided upon City instead.
The Norwegian has since opened up on the key factors behind his transfer decision - one which was made with the aid of his father, who himself once played for City. Haaland revealed: "First of all, my father a little bit. I was born in England, I've been a City fan my whole life, I know a lot about the club. I think in the end, two things; I feel at home a bit here. Also I think I can develop and get the best out of my game at City. |

Don't forget beating off other European giants to sign Adama Traore, Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Ferran Torres in recent seasons. They've become a mish mash of EPL cast offs in recent seasons. Aubameyang was another

Yeah he'll be praying his career path takes a similar route to that of Eric Garcia and Ferran Torres i'm sure
City don't sell their best players in their prime

I'm positive I read that Haaland and his agents have his career mapped out and Real Madrid is the next step after City. So City are basically a stepping stone towards something bigger, much like Dortmund.

Gabriel Jesus an absolutely quality player plus Sterling. Also Ferran Torres is an excellent player, nothing wrong with his career path.

Did you even read the UEFA link I gave you? It shows decisively that English clubs have outperformed Spanish (and all other countries') clubs over the last five years, such that not even RM's success prevents the EPL from being clearly out in front. As for Spanish EL success, with Sevilla and Villareal at least, they clearly decided that they couldn't even hope to win La Liga, so instead concentrated all their resources towards Europe. As for the effect of money generally, having it doesn't guarantee success, but not having it makes it increasingly difficult to be successful, especially now that English clubs are finally capitalising (sorry) on their wealth. And here too, all the evidence is that the wealth gap is increasing. Deloittes published their latest Annual Review of Football Finances yesterday, which included the following: "The Premier League today may be further ahead of the competition than
ever before. Concerningly, when excluding the Premier League, the [German/Italian/Spanish/French leagues] reported increased total operating losses during the year,
increasing from €461m to €901m." While in contrast: "With the return of full stadia, along with new broadcast deals and
improved commercial deals, the outlook for future Premier League clubs’
revenues is optimistic, with overall revenue projected to surpass £6
billion in the 2022/23 season." I predict that outwith RM, but including Barca, it will become ever more unlikely that selected Spanish clubs will buck the clear economic trends.

The money was right for all three, with the first two only having 1 year left on their contracts and unwilling to sign on as they wanted to play more games. Good years of service from them
