Yeah, Neil Lennon and Celtic mismanaged him. Signed him because of the hype at the time, with no real plan for him. When he didn't break into the team and needed a move desprately they sent him out to the local lower league side. Stalled his career first by not playing for 18 months and then by playing well below his level. At Queen's Park he has a goal or an assist every second game as a holding midfielder ffs. If they were smart they would have loaned him out straight away knowing they couldn't guarantee him football. If that had happened we could talk fairly about his ability. For Ireland he's always as good if not better than players playing at much higher levels than him.

They signed a player on the cheap from a team in administration, hoping he could contribute to their first team. They quickly realised that he wasn't first team ready and, due to a clear shortcoming in his ability (he's likely too slow a player to ever be good enough to be a regular for Celtic) they pretty much gave up on him, rather than do their best to make him the best player he could be. Other big clubs know from a good way out when players aren't going to make the grade with their first team. But they still do their best to get them to as high a level as they can (not least because it could help them recoup their investment in the player). Celtic, for whatever reason, don't have a good record of doing this. Connell isn't good enough to play for Celtic, but he should never have been sent to the Scottish fourth tier with Queen's Park. Sending him there was a clear sign that Celtic had lost interest in the player.

Only just turned 21 and with plenty money and an experienced manage in Owen Coyle then maybe Connell could do worse than the Scottish Championship for a year to continue his re-building after the initial sudden halt to his senior career that the Celtic move turned out to be.

He got his chance with a ramshackle, severely depleted, Bolton team hurtling towards relegation. In the ten matches he featured in, they scored a sum total of one goal (an own goal) and picked up a grand total of one point. A lot of the hype around him seemed to be based on his extremely young age and breaking into a Championship side without looking at the greater context.
Maybe, just maybe, he's not that good? Celtic's recruitment isn't infallible. Just from an Irish perspective, they signed Lee O'Connor and Jonathan Afolabi based on profile and who they were playing for rather than any cutting-edge insight; a load of the Irish-based players they sign go nowhere in their careers. You'd think if Connell was good enough he would've got a loan to a team higher up the food chain after his first loan spell, but no, it must be that Celtic are deliberately trying to sabotage his career.

Nobody is saying its deliberate, but more that they surely could've have managed him and his career better.

Anyone who thinks Connell "maybe isn't that good" has never watched him play. The constant references to Bolton's poor state of affairs (rather than Connell's extremely impressive performances within a team in disarray) in an attempt to talk him down personally only illustrates that.
People forget very quickly that Celtic were not the only team who wanted to sign him after that season, he was also linked with good EPL teams (like Spurs IIRC), so evidently his performances had impressed plenty of people. He's just a classy player and for anyone who has bothered to watch him a few times that would be self-evident, rather than attempting to revise past events in an attempt to write him off. The only thing he really lacks is pace, but that's hardly the end of the world for a centre mid.

Like you've watched more than YouTube compilations of him (if there even are any). Connell being linked with Spurs by random people on Twitter doesn't mean anything. Afolabi and O'Connor were linked with big teams as well. A few weeks ago Luke McNally was linked with Spurs FFS. Go back far enough and Glenn Whelan and Shane Long were linked with Liverpool! Let's just wait and see what teams are linked with him this summer, shall we? Say anything negative about an English-born player and he responds 5 minutes later like the granny rule version of Terri. "Only thing he lacks is pace".

I've watched all the 21's games and seen him a couple of times in those.
He looked a calm, composed centre-mid, very similar to how Kilkenny is playing for the 21s now. He's also comparable to Kilkenny in terms of physical attributes. Whether a lad playing well in the Scottish 3rd tier is good enough for our current 21's is up for debate. We picked a very lean 5 midfielders for the last squad (Coventry/Devoy/Kilkenny/Smallbone/Tierney) and I'd expect the same list, bar maybe Smallbone who could be still working injuries. There's certainly space in the squad for Connell as it stands.

this exactly. The lad has bags of skill and if anyone watched him it would be clear to see. when you look at what he has done in 2 years its abundantly clear that he is much better than Queens Park. For Celtic not to have realised that is criminal.

Get accused of being racist for implying that a player playing in a league similar in quality to the Dublin District Schoolboys League might be overrated.
Meanwhile on page 4 of the Liam Kelly thread, there's a link to a tweet Kelly sent referring to "English players like him being ran from the PL by foreign players". It's like something from Inception. Kelly just as highly rated as Connell and now a squad player at Rochdale. You'd think there's a lesson in there about strapping a rocketship to every single eligible player who briefly impresses, or plays, at Championship level.

Pointing out that there's been a precedent for granny rule players being hyped up beyond their ability, and that there is a rush to call up players when they're not ready/good enough because of the psychological effects of what happened with Grealish and Rice, is not whataboutery. |
