I think looking at the way it's working a 3rd place finish could easily get us a Nations League play off still. I'd love to see us really push for a top 2 place win a few games and more importantly not lose many if any. If we only won 1 or 2 games and drew the other 4 I'd take that as a positive we could compete with those 2nd 3rd seed teams and match them.
If we draw teams like Sweden Scotland Russia who would be likely push strongly for a Top 2 place in any Group they get thrown into and can compete with them it bodes very well. Part of me hopes we get drawn against a decent team or two ljke this. Would be a proper test.

There was only 12 teams in League A and B respectively in the first edition of the Nations League. However this time around there will be 16 teams in League A and 16 teams in League B. 20 teams will qualify directly for Euro 2024 via the traditional qualifying campaign. There is a high probability that these teams will be in League A and B. That leaves 12 unqualified teams in League A and B. League A and B both have 4 playoff berths. Therefore Ireland might get a playoff if they finished 3rd in their Nations League B group as only 4 teams from League A and B are guaranteed to miss out on a playoff spot. A 2nd place finish would all but guarantee a playoff spot. There is no playoff spot for League D teams this time around as there is only 7 teams in League D. The likes of Turkey, Greece and Northern Ireland will be in league C which is why a 3rd place finish may not be enough for a playoff for Ireland if a few teams qualified automatically. |

From McDonnell:
"While some members of the board have expressed caution around offering Kenny a long term deal, there is a strong view that a short term extension taking in the entire 2022 Nations League campaign - the Dubliner’s contract expires in the summer with 4 out of 6 games played - would not send out a message of certainty. Therefore, contract talks are expected to centre around an extended deal as a show of confidence. It is likely, though, that discussions would factor in an agreed severance package in the event of things suddenly deteriorating - this would be standard procedure in most football contracts but the FAI have left themselves exposed to substantial payouts in the past." Wonder what the definition of "suddenly deteriorating" is?

I would agree with this he should be given the campaign as a whole not just the NL games, likely some on the board hark for Robbie Keane in charge - god help us

I am a massive Kenny fan, but actually don't see what's wrong with giving a contract to cover the Nations League for now. As was seen with Trap and O'Neill, things can change very quickly in international football and we've been left paying off managers with money we don't have.

Thus the contract for the entire ECQ campaign to display a vote of confidence, but with a get out clause, just in case there's a disastrous sequence of results in the NL which is fair enough. Sensible and balanced way to proceed imo.

It's probably smart to add a clause like that to all contract renewals moving forward. It use to be a fixed world cup campaign or euro campaign but now its a NL + Euro and a NL + World Cup. Still give him them the full campaign 2 year contract until after the WC or EURO finals are due to be played but a severance @50% of the contract if after review of the NL performance we decide to go in different direction.
That would help with situations where if we lose all 6 NL games we wouldn't really be wanting the manager to stay on for qualifiers. Similar if we don't qualify for the Euros or WC then we can also sack immediate and remainder months are @50%

It's neither, it's the "beat Luxembourg or go" sceptics who don't want him there giving him his next 6 games to save his job. Again. It's insulting, and no other Ireland manager would, or should put up with it. If they're going to back him, give him the contract he deserves. If they're not going to back him, get him out the door, and get Big Sam in to tear up the project and get us back "playing to our strengths". With a 0% win record in the NL, it's hard to see our results in it get more disastrous than that. It's 6 games for the big teams to prepare for the World Cup, and for everyone else to prepare for the Euros campaign. That's all it is.

It's better than a derisory offer of a 3 month extension to his existing contract, so long as he and his agent are happy with the potential break clause.

That's all it is? Probably our only realistic route to a play-off. Usually you appoint a new manager to see progression, so I think we want to see better than a 0% win record.

3rd in the group gets you a playoff for the Euros. That's a realistic route, it's how we got there in 2016, and it's certainly more realistic than having to win the NL group. |
