Real Madrid have to win a trophy every season i.e. La Liga or the Champions League and even sometimes that still isn't enough to keep the manager in a job.

Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world but they aren't even in the top 3 or 4 teams with the best squad currently so why would any manager with a safe and cushy job go to a club that's firmly in transition?

Yet the board will demand they win at least La Liga or the Champions League next season?

Real's goal next season should be to blood as many youngsters as possible and remain competitive but be realistic about what they can actually achieve "but" that doesn't happen at Real unfortunately.

Signing Hazard is only going to paper over the cracks, they need 3/4 genuine top players to get them back to a level where they can compete in Spain and in Europe.

Be so great if Daley Blind could emulate his dad’s European Cup success. A case of D Blind following D Blind

It was absolutely heartwarming to see a genuine European great in Ajax thrash the filthy fascist doping scum in their own backyard.

As long as Brexit doesn't mess up the Premier League, Real Madrid might well find themselves as the next AC Milan, ie. a club which is used to winning European trophies but slowly fades into irrelevance.

The Premier League is primed to dominate Europe, and England are getting it right in a big way at youth level now.

The heyday of Spanish football is over, much like the heyday of Italian football came to an end. The 2010 team are nearly all gone now, and the general quality of player coming through in Spain now is much inferior to what it was 10 years ago.

Real Madrid's current squad is basically Dad's Army.

When Messi retires, it's quite possible La Liga could go the way of Serie A 20 years before it.

But Barcelona are a better run club than Real Madrid these days and if any La Liga club will remain a force at European level, it's them.

None of that will happen. 4 out of the last 5 europa leagues and the last 5 champions leagues all went spain. Not to shabby. La liga will always attract big names.

This nonsensical narrative that if you take out Christian Eriksen then there isn’t much difference between Denmark and Ireland always bemuses me. Schone with a great performance in midfield for Ajax tonight and Delaney playing for Borussia Dortmund. We’re talking about Harry Arter and Jeff Hendrick! Absolute levels!

I always rated schone but many people wouldnt even know him. Schone and delaney in the same team are decent but when u add eriksen then it looks so much better. Leave eriksen out and they arent the type of players that would hurt a team. Eriksen is.

8 out of 10 European Cup finals in the 1990s involved Italian teams.

9 out of 10 UEFA Cup finals in the 1990s involved Italian teams and there were four all-Italian finals.

Now they're nowhere.

AC Milan hoovered up the world's best players in the 1990s and were seen as the world's most glamorous club by a distance.

Now they're nowhere.

Real Madrid went 32 years without winning a European Cup and only reached one losing final in that time.

Couldn't believe when I saw the result. It's a shame that the Ajax team will inevitably be sold off, much like Monaco a couple of seasons ago.

I'd say a few people thought Tadic was mad to leave England to go play for Ajax.

For a player - Real/Barca are the top clubs you want to play for.
If they come looking for you, that’s very hard to turn down.

For a manager it’s different.
Especially if it’s Real, you know it’s a short term gig with massive expectations and you are never fully in control.

I think Pep will be a Spurs for a while but will end up at one of the Manchester clubs.

As for Spanish clubs - the top 3 make so much money they will be competitive going forward.
Real will/need to spend big this summer.

He 100% deserves to be sacked.

He has Bale and Asensio sitting on the bench for the majority of their games while Vasquez seems to start all the time.

Cracking game. Was really impressed with Ajax, some quality players in the team & Tadic looked top drawer. Not many will have sympathy for Real, fook them. The squad does need an overhaul though and think that was part of the reason Zidane left - he knew it needed rebuilding and didnt want to be the one to do it.

There's probably a few that could go, I think Carvahal & Casemiro are hugely overrated

Fair play to Ajax though, if they keep performing at that level they'll be a tough draw for anyone

Edit: Not that it matters but the VAR goal last night about whether the ball went out for a throw beforehand - was surprised it was given as it looked out on the replay

Yeah, it took them quite a while but the officials got it right - the whole ball wasn't completely over the line and it would have been a joke if they'd ruled the goal out for handball.

Big overhaul needed in that Real Madrid team in the summer alright, they looked very much like a team that had reached the end of it's cycle.  ZZ definitely got out at the right time as he was obviously aware of the sh*t show that was coming down the tracks.

Btw, so much for Sergio Ramos getting booked on purpose in order to get a suspension out of the way.  That's one c*nt I've absolutely no sympathy for.  Still, at least he's free now to play in their next CL match...in 6 months. LOL

Delighted for Ajax though, they were brilliant.  Not many teams go to the Bernabeu and take the game to Real like they did.  Clap

De Jong has already been sold to Barca for €75m.

De Ligt will be gone soon too.

Spurs and Ajax through, here's hoping a few more of the regular semi finalists teams are knocked out
