There's a clip of the Nolan show from two years ago saying that people should not build a house next to a potential bonfire site.

In Newtownards they're having to douse the building of a fire station in water as a massive bonfire has been built too close to it

You couldn't make it up

Were they always this outrageously big, like 40, 50 years ago? Surely 100 years ago they would have been nothing like they are now with pallets not being a thing?

Nolan Show this morning discussing some 17 year old with 40% burns in ICU after going up in flames pouring petrol on a bonfire. It's been turned into an attack on Loyalist culture according to Jamie Bryson. 
I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
