Kelly is the only thing even vaguely unexpected about that squad, which doesn't say much when it consists of 39 players.... But anyway, I suppose we've grown to expect that..

We're decent enough..

He didn't play against Preston. |

Absolutely. If Cunningham can't get in a 39-man squad you have to conclude that he doesn't have much of an international future under the current management. A shame as he looks like decent option for us.

nothing to do with being considerate. once u name them in the provisional squad u have options/rights around the players availability. if u don't name him and then need him the club may not necessarily release him (not sure exactly what the details are but u get my point!)

It's being very considerate by FIFA Rules clubs have to release a player if they are called up to a FIFA International game the list has to be submitted to FIFA at maximum 14 days before the fixture or minimum of 24 hours before the game. If MON wanted he could add say Stokes the day before and Blackburn would have to release him or suffer a fine from FIFA unless they have a very good reason for him not turning up |

A bit unusual that Cunningham isn't in the 39, was he afraid to name a 40?

I can see the logic of it, it means fringe players will feel involved and that they have a chance and gives the clubs plenty of notice.

Would rather Seanie Maguire in there than any of Doyle, Rooney or McGoldrick |

Being put on 'Stand-by' p*sses some players off as has been seen in the past. I much prefer the 39 man squad approach. Everyone is in and it is up to you to keep your place. When on stand-by, you are waiting for an injury to someone else.
A good chunk of the squad will be released after the Wales game so the fringe players get game time v Iceland.

It doesn't look like Doyle has scored at all in the pre season for his club. Surely Cillian Sheridan & Cunningham would have been worth a call up. Who'll play LB if Ward gets injured?
I know O'Neill is very like Trap in staying loyal to the players that always show up but Kevin Doyle really shouldn't be in that squad over Sheridan. Not much in it given our dearth of striking options.
