Leave Rice to England. It’s happened before and will happen again. In reality poaching players from the English youth system solely papers over the cracks of the state of the game over here is

Probably that our MON hasn't tried to tap Smyth up since the pretend country across the boarder capped him at senior level

There is that you're probably correct, Norn Iron players switch without an official approach (that we know of) ......but what Southgate is doing isn't against any rules .....could be classed as unsporting but not illegal

I think we need to get used to this happening and accept our place in the game, young players in the Premiership particularly (or those in the Championship who fancy themselves an awful lot) will always see us as the 2nd option

As a huge fan of Ireland ... I really felt Declan has let down all fans of Ireland ... he gave us much to hope for goin forward but why take 3 caps and then let everyone down or everyone that cares so much on here about the national team and you think that’s ok ... I don’t think it’s acceptable .. I read all posts and enjoy them but only spoke out today as I felt so so let down by this... I still hope he stays with Ireland but it’s not looking good now at all

Sorry, thought it was born in England. Mea culpa, as the pope might say!

Gold, Hammers' Chairman, hopes he will be the next Bobby Moore and captain England, the reality is at the moment, I almost have as much of a chance of doing that!Disapprove

He's a bit out of order here and the "born in England" thing is showing a total lack of respect to the Irish team.

As disappointing as it, we just need to move on. We already looked silly over the Jack Grealish fiasco especially after giving him U21 POTY. If we keep at Rice in the media we will look like desperate schoolgirls who are fawning over their first crush.

Surprised Keane hasn’t had his say, although I’m sure MON has told him to keep his mouth shut. I’d imagine he’s fuming thoughLOL

I'd definitely agree with Carlton Coles comments though.

So he kept me soul for ransom.

You would have to wonder with England's pursuit of Rice and Grealish, are they actually getting virtually as desperate as us to get players through!Smile

First of all, it's quite possible that seeing the World Cup, and how England did, has had an effect. That is certainly understandable. Secondly, in friendlies, he always knew it wasn't 100% final. Now, you might call that selfish but, again, without being in his position, it is hard to know exactly how and when he changed his mind. It's not even clear when or how Southgate approached him, but I doubt it was in the lead up to the World Cup.

Is there any other similar situations in international football? Where a player has been capped by a country, is still wanted by that country but has chosen to play for another country
