Logically Rice should be called into the squad to train ahead of the games, let him stay at home for Georgia game and then let him come back to train in Dublin ahead of Serbia. Get him integrated into the squad and perhaps let him sit on the bench as an unnamed squad member.
Let him continue his development for the next few weeks / months and if he continues to impress then call him up for the Moldova game with a view to capping him. He does appear to be a good prospect, but the transfer window isn't even closed yet and I'd say it's likely that West Ham will sign a new midfielder who will probably limit Rices game time. At this stage of his career he's not going to win us the 6 points we need from these next two games. |

Deco has 3! If it gets to the point that he has 25 senior games and is still performing then I have no doubt he will be called into the squad

I rather pick someone who has been good THIS season rather than someone who has been good LAST season.

Certainly sounds like a ball player our midfield desperately needs, if he's good enough he's old enough.
Rice was so impressive for his age that http://www.mirror.co.uk/s/footballews/declan-rice-scouting-re-west-11016557?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+co%2FNyiC+%28Mirror.co.uk+-+Home+-+S%29 - the Mirror were full of praise for the former captain of West Ham U23s, highlighting maturity well beyond his years.

Well if the likes of Wales are calling up Ethan Ampadu to the full squad then there is no excuse why Rice can't get a call up to our 100 man provisional squad.

i'm not saying he is ready or not but in general we seem to wait too long to call up younger players. there is never a right time. if we do qualify its the old well were going with the plaers who qualified us speech. and then what. we wait again. if someone clearly has the ability then we should be calling them up in general. im not specifically talking about rice here.

Wales have also called up Tom Lockyer and Lee Evans from Bristol Rovers and Wigan Athletic. The reason they have called up Ampadu is as much to do with their lack of depth as it is his potential.

Yep more to do with lack of depth in squad. While I slightly agree that is risky Rice won't be ahead of Duffy,Clark,Keogh, O'Shea or McCarthy,Whelan, Hendrick, Arter in defense/Midfield.
i know it was said the same about Grealish but I think Rice is committed to Irish cause Edited by lassassinblanc - 25 Aug 2017 at 3:59pm |

Lockyer is club captain at 22. Evans turned 23 only last month and, having suffered a series of injuries, has gone loan to Wigan from Wolves for some first team football. Both are arguably in the squad based on their 'potential'. Coleman could have called up the likes of Matthews, Vaughan and Crofts but chose not to do so. Collins has been omitted in the past. Notwithstanding the small pool of players they have to choose from, It seems reasonably clear that since Toshack's time, Wales have a deliberate policy of bringing young players into their setup based on their 'potential'. They are also proactive in calling up young duel-qualified players, such as Woodburn, Wilson (both eligible to play for England) Gethin Jones (wanted by Australia) as well as Ampadu (only 16 and obviously also qualifies for Ireland). And it's an approach that appears to have borne fruit - Wales have gone from a bunch of also-rans to a side that reaches the semi-finals of major competitions. If Rice were Welsh it seems fairly plain he would have been called up for these qualfiers. As probably would Cullen. Edited by NewtNewbie - 25 Aug 2017 at 7:29pm |

Ampadu was called up to the latest Welsh squad at the age of 16. He'll probably get a run out against Moldova
