The senior aspect of it is the dealbreaker for me. It's bang out of order. I can accept any level below that as a field of open decison for dual-eligible lads. The bleeding hearts can play Rice's advocate all they like. I'm sure it makes for fantastic longform reads and sympathetic newspaper rhetoric. The fact is, and always will be, that he stepped over a line and will be remembered for it. |

Anyhow, O'Leary is a psephologist, which is what I called him: And he's a pretty good one at that eg Tony Blair used him when New Labour was sweeping election after election back in the day.

It's the idea of walking away from a senior international team you're playing for regularly that rankles a bit. Usually players fall out of favour with the first country before deciding to switch. Just walking out abruptly on a senior team who are picking you and who want you is not going to win you many fans. The change of allegiance rule wasn't really introduced to facilitate players who simply want to "upgrade" their country or status. It was more for guys who either regretted their earlier decision to declare or who had fallen out of favour with the first country. |

If it were my team, I'd be far more annoyed by Grealish than Rice.
For I do feel that Rice was genuinely conflicted, but didn't handle it well, both process and PR. Whereas I have no doubt that Grealish played the (ROI) system for all it was worth, getting U-21 experience at a much younger age than he'd have got with England, then reverting to his own clear 1st choice as soon as he reached 20, thereby still leaving time to play for England's U-21's. It was the same with Shane Duffy, who was fast-tracked by Nigel Worthington, played at every level up to and including U-21, and was called up to the senior squad for a friendly away to Italy in 2009, when he was still only 17. I remember seeing on TV that he played absolute merry hell on the touchline when NW didn't bring him on from the bench* for what would have been his senior NI debut. Of course, a senior friendly wouldn't have tied Duffy, but it would have looked good on his CV - before he "did a Declan". * - My own guess is that already having used six subs, NW suddenly realised that if he used a 7th, it would "void" the game i.e. no longer recognised by FIFA, thereby putting NI's appearance fee and insurance cover etc at risk.

I'd be annoyed if my 'country' was colonial residue and a bipolar entity that wouldn't know the first thing about being a nation.

but why the cut off? Is it just because it's become acceptable for some of our lads to do it? |

On the other hand, Grealish refused a call up to the ROI senior team for a friendly against England. The thing that is annoying Irish fans is that Rice quit after three senior caps. If he had refused to play in those three matches, it would have been a different story.

England manager Roy Hodgson had made it clear to Grealish that he wanted him to represent his side. However, Hodgson did not pick him to play against the Republic in June, with the England boss saying "it would have been inflammatory at the last minute if he chose us and played". That was in June 2015 i.e. end-of-season, by which time Hodgson had already been chasing him. Grealish waited the minimum time afterwards (until September) to reveal what I suspect was his preferred choice all along;
Would those ROI fans have been similarly annoyed had he got his wish - then switched to join you?
