He's had a bit of a wobble but the fact that all his family want him in green will be the deciding factor. The buzz of Mick's appointment and the subsequent meeting this month will hopefully be a major influence in him staying with us. Declan Rice is Irish!

Leaving aside the the whole moral aspect of the discussion..........
If I was a betting man I would think we have him back. Not sure what the odds are now but I am feeling confident on this. Main reasons Micks enthusiasm, a decent draw, his family being onside, the fact the he still hasn't gone to england, the toxic environment of the last mgt team gone and Robbie Keane's influence.

DECLAN RICE has confirmed that he will sit down with Mick McCarthy later this month as he decides whether to stick or twist.
The West Ham star, 19, has taken a break from international football this season as he mulls over switching allegiance to England. But new Ireland chief McCarthy has made it a priority to meet up with London-born Rice, who picked up three caps in friendlies under former manager Martin O’Neill, as well as underage honours. And now Rice has said the meeting will happen soon, although he has yet to make up his mind on his international future. Rice revealed: “Mick has spoken to my dad and wants to meet me and my dad, which I said was fine. “I haven’t spoken to Mick myself yet, but I’m going to. There is no date planned yet. “There are a lot of things going on with my football at the moment. “I’m playing here week in, week out and there’s my contract situation, which is a lot to take on at a young age. “The England-Ireland situation is a lot to take on as well. I’m just focused on playing for West Ham. I said that to Martin O’Neill and he totally understood and respected that.” McCarthy hopes that the meeting can help Ireland win the international tug of war with England. He said: “I’m delighted that’s what he wants to do. If he said on Saturday that he didn’t want to meet, it would have been a problem.” |

He is right, it is a lot for a teenager to take on. Fair play to him for continuing to get in the team and play well despite the obvious distractions. He would be a huge boost for March.

Kevin Doyle made a good point the other day. His head is obviously saying England but his heart is saying Ireland as if it was the other way around he would have already chosen England

No chance. This will drag on at least till march. At least id say. Maybe longer. He should stop hiding behind his contract talks and make up his bloody mind.

That statement sounds like Mick will have his work cut out, doesn't sound like he'd commit by March.....how long do we wait?

We don't want to force his hand but he surely needs to be on board for the campaign starting in March.

if he had his mind made up , he wouldn't of taken up the offer in the first place , i fully expect him to be ready for the Euros , having Robbie there should help matters, there's absolutely no way he would meet Mick if he was switching allegiances or even thinking about it.

i don't know why that statement would make u think it will drag out any longer. i can only see positives in it.
anyway logically he will have to decide before march. he seems to be a reasonable smart lad so he will know he can't go into another campaign in limbo. he is probably thinking he will lose his free porn subscriptions if he declares for us.....decisions decisions!!

He really should be giving Mick an answer by the time of the first qualifier. If he doesn't, it's going to make him look wishy washy or a bit of a mercenary. He shouldn't need longer than six months to decide which international team he wants to commit to.
