That's the mindset, not just of the fan base but unfortunately the people who run football too. We can go down the route we've gone down in the past of hoping that England produce a few players who have some connection to Ireland in their families going back generations (a well that will surely run dry at some stage as emigration declines) and then hope that these players don't want to play for their homeland if they get the chance, which is obviously pie in the sky. Or we can put our energies and efforts into Irish players born in Ireland.

Declan seems like a good lad. I can't stand Grealish, but I think it's mostly due to his ridiculous haircut.

I think if Rice decided to stick with Ireland, it would be okay and I feel we should move on and forget the incident (MON seems to be taking this view too).
He would need to come out with a strongly worded statement along the lines of "I had a mini wobble about what I should do next but now I've come to my senses and am fully committed to the Irish team".

Or seeing England making a semi final and thinking he might win a World Cup, whereas if he chooses Ireland, he'll be lucky to win a throw-in.

Agree Strazdas. I still think he could play for us, probably 80-20 in England's favour though but there's always a chance, and he could be forgiven for his slight wobble easily.

You just reminded me how we always lose the ball when we have a throw in. You'd think this is something they could practice on the training ground.

Very good. Although I disagree, and I would say the 3rd generation home and away match regulars would too.

We should maybe bring in a specialist throw-in coach like Klopp has done

All that would have happened is that he would have made himself unavailable for a single qualifier - hardly the end of the world or an unforgivable thing. O'Neill seems to be taking the view that if Rice rings him and says 'I'm in', that will be the end of the matter.

His new agent wants him to play for England. Rice will allegedly double his wages at West Ham if chooses England along with the fact that the gobsh*te chairman is putting pressure on him to choose them. A lot of pressure on a 19 year old.
However, Rice has played for us 3 times already and that should be the end of the matter. No way should one be allowed jump ship after being capped 3 times for ''their'' country. Edited by grannyrule - 28 Aug 2018 at 2:30pm |

Here, if I had a new agent who started behaving like that, I'd be tearing up the contract with him and going back to my old agent! Call me old-fashioned, but I think it's disgusting to declare for a country because it might get you a bigger contract. The decision you make on which country you play for should be based on your heart, not your wallet. |

Yes, it looks bad that a current international and someone who played for us only a few weeks ago is thinking of jumping ship. I wonder if Rice has thought this through properly and doesn't realise just how bad it looks to everyone. It's not as if he had fallen out of favour with Ireland or something and been omitted from a load of successive squads.

Ultimately for me a lot of the blame rests with the manager. He could have been given 5 minutes at home to Austria and been locked in. The risk was always there otherwise
