All but confirmed that Dublin has lost it hosting rights (to St Petersburg apparently). Games have also been switched from Bilboa to Seville, bit Ireland is the only country to lose out.
This is obviously not surprising news but it's a fair question to ask how the country with the longest and severest lockdown in Europe is the only one to lose out on hosting games.

Not really. It's the sensible choice to let the games go.

I'm starting to think that's the case. I've been obedient to all the public health advice over the last 14 months, but the government have made a balls of it. Not bringing in rapid PCR testing for schools, construction etc has been a calamity. On the Dublin Euros games, could they not have just allowed vaccinated people to attend. You'd easily have gotten 11k at each game and it would have been safe, and a good test to see how we can manage this going forward

it would have been madness to go ahead with the euros and those countries that are taking a chance on holding games are risking the health of people for what ???

Correct. Should have either cancelled it altogether or moved it to the one site. It's madness still holding it all over Europe.

Its disappointing for many people but did we really want thousands of people coming into the country for a last 16 game? That Indian strain seems to be killing young people.

I'm still amazed that you UEFA didn't just move it to one country.

Happy enough with this to be honest with Ireland not involved. Would be a bit like watching someone else ride your misses

In a wierd way a normal Euros as hosts would have been torture without us in it so I’m not devastated.
However to say it was too dangerous to hold it is something a loon would say. Potentially 1 million plus vaccinated all those over 60 that want it basically those at risk. Into the summer too which as we know last June cases were non existent. Not going to get started on that but you would swear it was the Black Plague. The fact that we are the only country behaving like this should be a bloody hint this is crazy and we are ridiculous compared to the rest of Europe.

I am guessing there would have been a sudden miraculous ability to stage the games had we actually qualified for the tournament...

Oh absolutely no doubt about it the same way that businesses as of now can’t operate outside but every county can have GAA players (amateur sport) out training. Depends where the wind blows.

One interesting note from the FAI's press release....UEFA basically have said that Dublin will be allocated a European final post 2023. Were probably talking either a Conference or Europa League in the Aviva, but it would be wonderful if The FAI and The GAA could come to an arrangement to bid for a CL final.
Very unlikely I know, but we've lost 4 prestigious games

Think the limit on capacity rules the Aviva out for a Champions League final.

Right decision for us. We need the Aviva as a mass vaccination centre more than Eufa need it as a cash cow. They'll make their money elsewhere. The real bonus in hosting was the financial bonus for the tourism and hospitality sector. With them out of bounds for the moment, no real loss to Ireland.
