Hogan doesn't even have an Irish passport yet so very unlikely he'll be in the squad for these games.

Well, nothing would surprise me. Not expecting to bump into Hogan in Tbilisi all the same.

If Hogan scores the goal that qualifies us for the World Cup will people not be happy because he MAYBE wanted to play for England first?? Best supporters in the world me hole

Non-ROI born players who've played for us probably come into four categories :

1.If you cut them they would bleed green. They'd have never played for anyone else even if given the chance. Kevin Kilbane, Gary Breen, Tony Grealish, James McClane.

2.Felt dual qualified and had an allegiance to both countries? Ciaran Clarke,Stephen Reid,  Mick McCarthy, Jonathan Walters.

3. Played for Ireland as a career move but some grew to have an affection for the country? John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Jason Mcateer, Mark Lawrenson.

4.The fourth group are the troublesome ones and maybe subjective to our own individual opinions and feelings. Players who when they played or since they retired have got your back up for one reason or another.
Here's mine for what it's worth. Mick Robinson, Andy Townsend,Tony Cascarino, Clinton Morrison.

Where does Hogan fit in to this? We can all have our own ideas. Does it matter? I don't think so.

I'm delighted to have him with us.

Genuinely reckon Lawro would secretly class declaring for Ireland a mistake. Doubt there's much affection there to be honest.

When he was on that RTE documentary about closing Dalymount (which of course then never happened)
I thought he genuinely looked like he had fond memories of playing there. He also played with some very good players with Ireland but I agree if he'd known how good he'd get he'd have waited for England.

As he said himself,

"The opportunity to play international football was irresistible to an 18 year old spotty-faced kid playing in the third division."

The only reason this lad hasn't declared before now is because after serious knee injuries he wanted to make sure he got himself right for the club. Screw that up then he screws his entire career up. He has bust his bollocks to get where he has. Only 4 years ago at the age of 21 was he playing non league football in Lancashire.

Anyone who says otherwise is talking through their hole and doing our latest player a major disservice. It's actually insulting.

The injuries are irrelevant. All had had to do a year ago was say he would love to play for Ireland. The complete silence from him at the time of the press speculation and public comments from MON would suggest he was very much in two minds about the subject. Cyrus Christie for example says he told O'Neill he wanted to play for him the moment he knew he was on his radar.

Why? Just to make you happy? Not every 2nd or 3rd generation Irish lad bleeds green like Kilbane. However I genuinely believe this guy wanted to play for us when the time was right. The two ACL injuries have clearly f**ked with his head.

As he said he just wanted to focus on getting his career up and running. To try and get a full season under his belt.

I'll repost this comment because he wasn't silent last year. This was said last September to a local paper after roughly 7 matches of the season...

“I know we don't go back on it but I have been out injured but it's important to be playing as many games for Brentford at the moment.

“International honours is a big thing but there's only one place I want to play my football at the minute and that is here.

“They look after me, monitor my fitness and everything. Due to that I've played every minute this season which is some going after what's happened.”

He is a far better footballer than Cox, how that will pan out given his style and injuries is anyone's guess.

A better finisher maybe, but Cox is actually quite a good all round footballer. From what I've seen of Hogan he has raw potential, but he'll need to improve on aspects of his game such as his first touch and link-up play if he wants to progress to the EPL.
We're decent enough..
