Hogan probably should be in squad on form, but history tells us he's a streak man. You hope that streak coincides with Ireland games (which it never does).
Hogan could very easily not score again til after Easter. In lies his Achilles heal. He's a great finisher on his day, but spectacularly inconsistent.

Personally I would rather us focus on developing Idah, Parrott and Connolly than using Hogan or Collins. Hogan may be scoring a few now but its going to be temporary.

But by the same token the three young lads might never make it. I struggle with the assumption that just by playing them it will eventually click, and that perhaps it ought to be done to the exclusion of picking some older heads.

So Hogan is nobbled by history and a hypothetical scenario in which he never scores again. It's a lot more likely our young-gun options not only won't score until after Easter but all year.

I agree. Those three "youth policy" lads have 31 caps between them.

You'd swear that Idah, Parrott and Connolly are keeping out awesome strikers and not two cloggers with nary an impact in 20 intl games between them (Hogan, Collins) and a clogger with a worse Championship goalscoring record than Conor Sammon (Will Keane).

It’s a legitimate debate to be had. It comes down to the fact that “beggars can’t be choosers” and our whole roster of strikers is less than impressive. Two goals between our three young strikers over 30 caps. That’s the same number as Collins has scored (and neither were scored against a team like Andorra). Going with ‘potential’ is just easier to swallow than picking journeymen. But that doesn’t mean the result will be better.

Think it will come down to a choice between Hogan or Collins. Can't see Kenny dropping any of the younger strikers out of the squad, Robinson will defo be included & i'd imagine he will keep Keane as he is a fan & he is in better form now than when he first picked him. That said if he does pick Hogan he will be probably looking at 30 mins against Lithuania at best.

Two 29-year-old cloggers with 24 goals or three not-so-awesome younger cloggers with 4 goals. Tough one that. |

Your stats are incorrect. Parrott: 4 goals Connolly: 2 goals Idah: 1 goal

Hogan deserves a place in squad based on current form. Same as Keane.
It's a new season for Kenny and two friendlies in March so a good chance to have an extended squad including all the names mentioned |

We've been through this already. Better goalscorers than Hogan and flipping Will Keane have failed to translate that form to Intl level and/or don't get picked for teams similar to us. Ross Stewart, Jordan Rhodes, Ross McCormack, Steven Fletcher, Chris Martin, Dion Charles. The list is endless. Hogan has looked uniquely awful in half a dozen appearances for us. Collins, despite appearances, is not a Daryl Murphy type who'll bully opposition defenders and win everything in the air; goals have dried up for him at Cardiff, proving what I always said about penalties making his stats look better than they are. Keane was crap and injury prone at Championship level and is having the first good goalscoring campaign of his career at the ripe age of 29.

Just stating facts. He's been on 3 streaks in his career prior to this across all clubs. I remember doing research in a previous post about him, and barring the odd goal and here and there he usually has prolific streaks followed by prolific drought. I'm not saying he shouldn't be included. It's just a fact that the chances of a prolific Scott Hogan turning up are very slim.

We have only had one prolific striker in our history, and we have never properly recovered from his retirement. It was also less than helpful that Walters and Doyle retired shortly thereafter, and Long’s form decline to such an extent that he has probably missed out on being a centurion with 20 goals to his name.
Robinson’s recent run has been excellent, and Ogbene looks sharp for a goal. But since 2018 it has almost become a bit of a gag that Duffy is more prolific than anybody else.

Fair to say have the former hasn't made a difference so far. Separately... Robbie Keane isn't prolific by Irish standards, he's a freak. Prolific would be 20-30 international goals
