Austria at home was another missed opportunity. There for the taking after beating them in Vienna but we started with a defensive midfield and that set the tone and really only started attacking after they scored. That was surely the sort of game for Hoolahan to start, instead we got Glenn Whelan.

It probably did all go wrong at the Welsh match, but more so because we lost our star player and captain for the remainder of the campaign. You're right, we should have been able to push on and get a winner but I think the loss of Coleman was a more devastating blow to our qualifying chances.

That’s the frustrating thing. Am I right in saying if we had got a draw at home to Serbia we would have topped the group? So many missed opportunities

Personally, I'm one who sticks with a manager through thick and thin and believe honouring their contract to the end (even if its a bitter end). We are now at a place where a new contract has yet to be signed and I believe its an opportune time for Martin to ride off into the sunset. The last few years have been some of the best as an Irish fan (some highs and some lows but the highs were very very high) however its now time to move on. Thanks for the memories Martin...your place in Irish footballing history is assured

Very reminiscent of Jack's last campaign. And Austria were in that group too, they're fcuking jinxes. |

At least the Georgia away result meant nothing in the end. Would have been tough to take that

We needed just 11 points after Christmas, to win the group, and with 12 points at home alone to offer, and 2 of those games facing 10 men, we had lots of opportunities. Sadly we got just 9 points after Christmas, and theres a lot more to that, than the usual "lack of players" that has been wheeled out every failed campaign for nearly 20 years.
Iceland are at the WC, Switzerland are at the WC, Sweden are at the WC, Croatia are at the WC. Similiar populations and/or similiar resources and they're there. We're watching it on the red button, with the men responsible for our fate also at the WC, albeit acting the leprechaun for the brits amusement on BBC and ITV. We need to have a serious development plan in place. A ten year plan. The FAI just wing it. Not that anyone here notices until we miss out on a tournament. Most people here are only concerned about tickets, not many make suggestions for how a ten year plan might work, the kind that Denmark implemented, that Germany did, that Belgium did. But then it is the FAI's job to put such a system in place. Instead they wing it, and we hope that Cullen and Rice (born in UK) will add something in the next couple of years. We need a production line. That is achieved by implementing a proper system. |

I hear the SFAI couldn't give a sh*te about any plans. Not sue but could the FAI not bring in a rule saying you woon't get picked for Ireland underage teams unless you play with a club that signs up to their Koovermans/Doktor programme?

I think the FAI were pushing the Irish underage managers to select players from LOI clubs to help motivate players to go that direction.

In World Cup qualifying our home form is killing us. Since we last qualified in 2002, we have only lost 2 away games. However we have lost 6 home games in that time.
